Hey, this is my first post on these boards, and I was hoping that someone here could recommend me a good single player PC RPG, preferrably pretty and with some sort of learning curve; non linear plot is a plus. Something Neverwinter Night's 2/Oblivion/Fallout3-esq.
Thanks.
I have I pretty nice machine, E8500 cpu, 8 gigs of ram, nvidia 9800 gtx+.
I'm looking for a refuge from wow.
I've played:
Morrowind(all xpacs)
Oblivion (all xpacs)
Fallout 3 (with operation anchorage)

The Witcher
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Especially The Witcher. I'm playing it right now and it's fantastic.
The Witcher might fit the bill, though your skill development isn't as flexible as other games (Geralt will always at least have a competent level of swordsmanship and at least some basic magical skills). It does satisfy the branching plot though.
There's also Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, which you can pick up on Steam. Very atmospheric (outside the Hollywood sewers. That section of the game can die in a fire) and flexible character building. Not exactly a non-linear plot, but that is justified. You're allowed to protest being sent on quests by a 300 year old vampire that has the ability to control minds, but he will use that mind control on you when he gets tired of your whining. On the plus side, you get to feed on the blood of the living.
Since you clearly have the specs for it, i'd say The Witcher and Drakensang are both no-brainers. They're two of the finest PC rpgs of recent years.
But you really are missing out by skipping Fallout. It saddens me to think that no other RPG released in my lifetime will likely reach its stratospheric levels of greatness.
EDIT: oh, and jesus christ Vampire: Bloodlines, yes. Tons of superb dialogue, fantastic setting, good length, great characters...it's a must-play, man.
I'm in the same predicament. I've pretty much played all the stuff that I want to play in the Western RPG genre. I reinstalled Kotor II and am sort of working my way through that atm. I suppose the new NWN II Westgate expansion might work.
Plaaaaaanescape. It's not that close to what you listed, but it has one thing working for it.
it's PLANESCAPE.

A lack of system resources, IMO, forced developers to be more creative. This is why text games had some of the best writing and most challenging puzzles. Games have trended progressively dumber and easier as time goes on. Which isn't a bad thing, and, as I said, it was a trend and not a blanket rule. FPS mazes of the mid to late nineties were hard, but not fun.
So the best RPGs you could play are going to be varying degrees of old: planescape: torment is the alpha nad omega of RPGs. failing that, fallout 1 & 2, the ultima series, eye of the beholder, the baldur's gate series, and KOTOR 1&2 all spring to mind.
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are definitely must plays. Same goes for Mass Effect.
Also, I recommend getting The Pitt and Broken Steel for Fallout 3 especially Broken Steel since it raises the level cap. I haven't tried the latest DLC so I can't comment on that just yet.
I hear the PC version is slightly better, but ugh... I tried so hard to play it.
It is also very linear. Sure over half the game is sidequests, but they're (almost) all striaght forward and you need to do them all to get the true final boss.

I had fun with it for a couple dozen hours or so. However, I found the combat way too repetitive and boring, and the storyline not interesting enough to make me want to continue.
I can't believe only one person has recommended mass effect so far but seriously, motherfucking Mass Effect!!! Also this thread has now inspired me to acquire The Whicher.
OP Here.
I've played Mass Effect on console, was a good game, although I didn't really want to run through it again like with NWN 2, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 (each of which i've probably logged well over 100 hours on).
Thanks again for all this feedback, from the looks of it I should be rid of WoW for the next few months.
Seconding the VTM:BL, Fallout, Last Remnant, and Witcher recommendations, they'll all be suitable, VTM:BL especially.
Have you played Gearhead or Dwarf Fortress? Excellent timewasters, easily minimized, not all that resource intensive.
I've never heard of Gearhead.
But i've heard of dwarf fortress, ascii based and difficult as hell (something to do with cats?) from what I hear. I'll try it one day.
At this point, I'd probably hold off on Mount & Blade until its expansion hits (when is that due anyway?). It includes multiplayer and a graphical overhaul, so it'll look a lot better than it currently does.

I wouldn't reccomend that PS:T be the first real RPG he plays. RTwP, bits that were only made bearable because you were couldn't die, logic puzzles, etc.
And if you're looking into DF, Mayday(he posts here occasionally)'s tileset/full distributable is here, and there's a video tutorial

Umm... Unless there's a second person asking for recs here, he;s said that he's already finished all of the modern, mainstream RPGs
I'm also looking for an RPG to play, but for the DS (and I guess the GBA too). I just finished replaying The World Ends With You, and before that I got about halfway through Etrian Odyssey II before being completely burned out on the endless grind. So I'm looking for something new to satiate me.
I'm tossing around a few ideas, knowing what's out and all. SMT: Devil Survivor is an option, but I've never played a SMT game before. I also thought of picking up Chrono Trigger, which I haven't played in years and years and wouldn't mind going through again. Any other more esoteric suggestions?

I think September, but there are mods you can get to help with graphics.
There is also Two Worlds. It is better than you think it is.
This game is awful. I have it on PC and the sound only works 50% of the time, on 2 seperate computer systems. It is rife with horrible voice acting, and terrible gameplay quirks. It looks pretty though, for the most part, and has multiplayer, though the multiplayer is filled with guys letting people enter their game, and then using the time stop spell and killing everyone while they cant move. So the Multiplayer is kind of pointless unless you play with friends.

I was thinking about that, but I'd like to utilize my machine a little more before I go down the line.
I'll look into that.
Thanks for the feedback.
But I thought you wanted good RPGs :P
Did you try the Witcher?
I tried Daggerfall once, but I had stability issues. Was too lazy to try and fix it.

Its a big wait for October.

As said, the Baldur's Gate games, due to being well-done 2D, still look good to this day.

This was excellen on the PC. Very overlooked, not so great on 360, but every issue that was on 360 was instantly fixed by putting it on the PC.

Go get it, RIGHT NOW!
A roguelike with giant robots! Why haven't I heard about this before!? I'll have to find some time to waste with it.
