I love it when he says "AND THEN THERE'S THIS ASSHOLE...!", and I don't know why. It just sets the mood on whether or not you're supposed to like the guy. Makes ma laugh.
Okay, I had originally made the thread regarding a specific episode, but I've been watching more of the show and damn it I like it a lot. And there's a lot worth talking about.
I just now watched the episode about recycling. I feel a little mind-blown, but I think I'm gonna look up whatever I can to verify things. It seemed rather on the ball at face value though.
It's not, though. The problem is that Penn's not above distorting the truth for his own purposes. His main tool here is controlling what appears and doesn't appear on the show, omitting "inconvenient facts" from being shown. He's not above using bad data either, which is why he had a massive scandal over the secondhand smoking episode when he got caught basically laundering the findings of Big Tobacco's pet scientist.
Basically, as I said in my thread on this topic two years ago, there are two sorts of episodes. The first is where he goes after a group which is very deserving of scorn, in which case he just gives them enough rope to hang themselves in front of the camera. The other is where he tries to take on a polarizing issue, where he tries to push his side as the One Truth. This is where he fails, and comes across as an egotistical blowhard.
He's right though, about recycling... to a point. I heard a talk (I forget by who) about a year ago on NPR discussing the fact that in quite a few cases recycling isn't very efficient. But that's not because recycling as an idea is bad... it's because the products aren't designed from the beginning with the idea that they will be recycled. If they were it would make recycling much more economical than using "virgin" materials.
So yes, he's right... for the moment. Of course it wouldn't do well for his show to say, "If recycling was actually more efficient then it would be profitable for more things to be recycled than aluminum. Of course, here's how it can be made that way..." when he's trying to argue against the point.
I love it when he says "AND THEN THERE'S THIS ASSHOLE...!", and I don't know why. It just sets the mood on whether or not you're supposed to like the guy. Makes ma laugh.
It's not so funny when you realize why he does it - as someone stated earlier in the thread, it's a dodge to make it harder for someone to pursue a defamation claim against him.
that would seem to speak to pre-existing issues, rather than any effect firearms have on a person
Fuck that, guns are the ability to hold death in your hands. That fucks with some people's heads because they realize entirely what that means. If you hand me a gun my brain short circuits, I do not like holding one or being around them. We are literally one trigger pull away from permadeath.
My mind is trained to think of alternatives as part of my job and lifestyle. When I see a gun I see: it can go off accidentally (there are no accidents like they say in traffic school but you know what I mean) or the person handing me the gun can kill me - or themselves - or I could shoot them or shoot myself or a child can wander in... the mind just keeps going and going. As I am always looking for the worse case scenarios in life, I can't think "the gun will stay there til I pick it up and shoot a target with it." It's better removed from the scene.
So therefore I am not pleasant when shoved in a situation of armed people. So I avoid it when possible. This person maybe had some of the same thoughts.
Christ, have people been quoting that line for the last twelve pages?
People put themselves in situations in which they might die all the time. Drive a car? (for that matter, walk on a sidewalk?) You could die at any second.
Yes, guns are dangerous. There are plenty of times when it would be wise to be leery of firearms. It does not mean that being in the presence of one or holding one is cause for immediate breakdown.
Eat it You Nasty Pig. on
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
I felt a bit bad for the guy who got the lie detector at the end of this episode.
Yeah I felt for him on two fronts. One was getting raked over the coals by chrome dome there in the lie detector. Two was for even agreeing to the whole farce in the first place. When the whole lie detector thing came up he should have told her to piss off right there.

They explain this in the first episode. IMO it makes is even more awesome!
They have an insanely restrictive approach to guns, where a swat team will happily raid houses even just suspected of having guns, and this has resulted in next to no shootings. The question is if one is willing to put up with that level of possible invasiveness in return for that level of safety.
But there are also 14 year old girls killing their classmate with a box cutter and some wacko who drove a semi through a shopping district, crashed it and began stabbing people.

And the 16 year old girl who killed her father with an ax (went for the neck) as well as the 15 year old boy who hit his dad in the head with a hatchet.
Then you have people like Ichihashi Tatsuya, the guy who beat and strangled a British woman (Lindsay Hawker) and buried her in sand in a bathtub. He's not even wanted for murder, just abandonment of a corpse. There's also video of her entering his apartment before her body was found.

I really like the TV Show, not sure why. But I don't think its for the facts.
But I was wondering while watching season 1 (I am in Australia so its all buying on DVD or downloading). Are Penn and Teller not just figure heads for this show? To me it seems like a couple of guys came up with a good idea for a show but to seal the deal they got some entertaining hosts to sell it (aka Penn & Teller)?
Also holy crap!? 12 Seasons!? they only sell the first 3 here on dvd -_-.
I'm quite certain that this is Penn and Tellers baby.
Huh I really got the impression other wise from Season 1 + Half of 2. But I am often wrong .
Also no clue where I got 12 from, but damn I need to catch up!
Also something to try and add to the discussion, episode(s) about food. I remember one with kids in a beach house telling people cooking food was bad? Man that made me angry. I hope those episodes where correct, never really thought of the math. X number of people on the planet and Y number of food that can be produced.
