The SB controller is always cool, but I would rather have things like force feedback and the like. Then again, Mechs don't have things like windshield wipers.....I think.
EDIT: Christ, was I drunk when I typed this? Horrible work.

The technology for windshield wipers was lost in the second succession war.
And the Capellan Confederation protects its only squeegee factory well.
Mechs seem to be so horribly inefficient when it comes to internal heat control that the second it moves or opens up with its weapons, any rainwater on the canopy would have evaporated.
That's my theory, anyway. If anything, rain is a good thing, because enough of it might help heat dissipation. Plus, Mech battle in torrential downpour: awesome.
You really shouldn't be looking out the actual cockpit much anyway. Most of the time you should be using the display.
Real men fight blindfolded and by echo location!

Steel Battalion assumes you use the displays as well, but the external cameras still get dirt on them. The wipers clean those cameras.

Man, I know the re-done version of the Warhammer isn't all too popular, but I'm really surprised at how good it looks when you do a simple conversion like add a proper SRM-6 launcher and a searchlight to give it a profile closer to the old one.
Though, I get the strangest feeling they didn't do that for the same reasons HG is going after the game's version.
While I have some mixed feelings about the gameplay and mech lab mechanics, I think my favorite 'mech portrayal overall came from MechWarrior 4. Specifically, the FMV, but the in-game 'mechs too.
Best looking Vulture ever, right before it got holes carved in it by PPCs.
For some reason, the majority (I'd say about 95%) of literature art and tabletop models strike me as being too....lanky. Certain features seem too exaggerated also. For example, in game, the Mad Cat has small, well-protected viewports, whereas in most artwork, the windows are gigantic, with thin braces between them.
Purely an aesthetic complaint. As for the actual game, assuming it actually gets released, I'm hoping for Hotas and TrackIR, neither of which MW4 has.
EDIT: If you type in 'Mad Cat' into Google Images, you get pictures of this cats with insane "Do it Faggot" grins.
I really liked the aesthetics of MW4 too. The clan 'mechs really looked like they had modular weapon racks, which they should (in my opinion).
Yeah, the standardization of components (for example, the arm cannon mounts on the Vulture and Mad Cat) made logical sense, if not necessarily plot sense.
They also looked much more robust. I liked how the Vulture's cockpit was this small module at the top of the central body, not some gigantic section with a church window for visibility.

So, what exactly is it that's got HG's panties in a bunch about this MW? Is the WH's arms too similar or somthing?
The cockpits have always been out of proprtion in mechwarrior. It started from the origional itineration when they mixed Zentradi mecha and the RDF mecha in the same scale. Stuff like the Maurader, with it's cockpit being along the main body basically went to a tiny little slit down the front. Too make it not change the look the cockpit suddenly went far too small. Same thing with the veritechs, in Robotech the pilot is in the body of the craft and the head is a sensor dome, Battletech rules force the head to hold the cockpit (though this changed) and suddenly you were forcing a body that couldn't fit in the head scale wise.
If anything, being sued finally allowed artists to get the general scales of all the mecha to conform.

Basically, they're claiming ownership over derivatives of the designs. The MW version was identifiable enough as a warhammer/tomahawk that they won't let it go.

Spoilered for largeness
I think my favorite 'mechs have always been the ones furthest from being humanoid in design. The 3025 'mechs always seemed odd looking, whereas later designs such as the Timber Wolf, Warhawk, and Nova dropped the human lookalike designs. The Atlas is the exception though in earlier games it always looked like a sad 'mech wanting a hug.
Holy god damn. That Crysis mod is shaping up nicely (I know that's a bit off-topic here).
Nah, this is the everything Mechwarrior thread. That said, the Crysis mod has been shaping up nicely for longer than the list of metaphors I could use to describe something's extreme length.

I'm kind of annoyed they're going with a look closer to that of the tabletop game, but that won't stop me from picking up a copy of Crysis when it finally comes out. Assuming my two 8800GTs can handle it anyway.
So, hey, there's now a countdown on their page for tonight. But a lot of people on their forum seem to think it's about A MW2 remake instead of the MW4 release

The URL and the name in the corner say it;s a new version of their MW2 remake

Hot damn. I had no idea that was what it was for. I thought it was for the MW4 release.
Also, a chance to play as Clan Wolf again? Awesome. I'm a little wary of the custom engine, but hey, beggars can't be choosers.

This game (err, Mechwarrior) needs some kind of persistant online campaign. With factions and the IS and Clans and everything. I don't know if that's been brought up yet.

No... I mean like Chromehounds. Team battles that result in one faction losing territory after a set number of skirmishes, with one faction eventually overpowering all the others and "winning". It was a really cool feature in Chromehounds that gave the combat meaning, and would fit perfectly in regards to the Battletech story.

Man I don't want no Mechwarrior MMO.
Are you kidding? It wouldn't have to be a wow-style MMO, but a persistant campaign would be AWESOME.
Didn't you ever play that 3025 game EA was beta testing? The one they cancelled to make a BASEBALL GAME?
Man, I heard about that. So much RAGE that it got the boot.

Yeah, no-one wants a 'Mech with "levels" and stats that increase with experience, but a persistent campaign where all the normal rules apply, except that your battles are recorded for posterity and you thereby influence the path of the greater war would be pretty good. Even to the point of particularly good players being given command of other lances for set-piece missions at tournaments and other public events.
I remember playing the original Battletech: Solaris. First MMO I ever played, hell I did not even KNOW it was an MMO. The loss of 3025 broke my tiny teenage heart.

MMO does not automatically translate to MMORPG, for fuck's sake.

I secretly used it under my Aunts AOL account.....and racked up something like $200 in charges for the game. She was not happy.
Totally remember my lame screen name and clan too: <<-<ScorpionS>->> Steel Dawg
Thing is I played it after I had played Mechwarrior:Mercenaries.

I could talk about the Mechwarrior 4 using German MW league I was in years ago again, but I don't think I can write 10 pages or so about how awesome it was at the moment.

Haha, I went through Gamestorm so I did not see the hourly charges. Gamestorm was gold in the day. So many great, easy to play, games. Silent Death, Aliens, BT, Warcraft, was an incredible service for its time.
A MechWarrior MMO with a persistent universe sounds cool, but ONLY after--WAY, WAY AFTER--an actual surviving MechWarrior series is established with a robust but varied single-player campaign. You know, the the actual MW games were known for.
Then, you can take the mechanics and engine, set up an MMO, and have teams of a thousand LRM-boats exchange volleys at 1200 meters for hours on end. At least, that's basically what 90% of MW4 matches degraded to.
any mechwarrior game worth its snot would not allow customization of Inner Sphere mechs except for the official variants.
Actually (assuming we're talking campaign mode) it would allow customization only at equipped facilities and that would take the 'mech out of commission for a length of time suited to the level of modification. It's not like the rules say no one's ever customized a 'mech.
BTW the AT2:BT beta is very impressive, but if you accidentally don't assign yourself a 'mech, well ... you spawn, fall to the bottom of the stage, and sit there wondering WTF happened and why your 'mech is a flat black hexagon with a white outline.
