Inner Sphere is awesome, Clan mechs are for pussies.
You're a pussy, Clan Wolf for life! :x
fixed that for you, freebirth!
Changed it back, some of us don't mind the fact that we came from vaginas *scary music here*.
Though I still belong to Wolf's Dragoons, heh. The IS is okay by me.
More relevantly, taking out the ability to customize IS mechs would not only upset a lot of people, I suspect, it would probably piss off the developers too. There's a reason why every game since MW2 let you do just that. I honestly can't remember if customization was available in MW1.
any mechwarrior game worth its snot would not allow customization of Inner Sphere mechs except for the official variants.
So true. IS Mechs are not omnimechs. You can't just swap out components, nothing is standardized. They are in effect custom designs.
And I like it that way. I like Mechs with flaws. For example, the Rifleman has far too many guns for it's heathsinks and ridiculously little rear armor. If Mechs are customizable, they'll become interexchangable gun boats.

It's not like the official rules cover customizing IS 'mechs or anything, nope.

customizing the inner sphere mechs gets rid of the point of having the mech (most of which are designed for fulfilling a more or less specific job) be inner sphere in the first place.
I mean, its a matter of opinion and I've got no beef if you want to roll in a centurion packing LRM 20's, but I think it kind of takes away from the whole Inner Sphere/Clan differential

Actually I think you're missing the spirit of the game entirely. Most IS Mechwarriors aren't piloting fresh-off-the-line Battlemechs with new car smell; they have ancient, patched-together rust buckets which are temperamental and had their original specifications shot to hell (literally) a dozen times.
An old IS Battlemech that has seen numerous campaigns has likely been patched together again from spare parts more than once. In this way, any salvageable IS Battlemechs get chopshopped frequently--thing is that it takes time for this kind of work. The tabletop customization and field repair rules address this. A 'mech being refit with a medium laser in place of its destroyed medium pulse laser can probably be running again in a day or two, but if you want to upgrade the engine, you need facilities and several months, not to mention c-bills flying out your ass unless one of the houses is picking up the tab.
Clan 'mechs simply have the advantage of being designed to make this practical and efficient. It's not as if the IS has no service crews, mechanics, or engineers. It's all the difference between paying a professional mechanic to customize your car, versus having GM's concept car which has body configurations designed to be swappable in your home garage. Both are possible, but one takes tons more work and resources.
Now applying this to a video game is really very simple: You want to field repair your 'mech it can probably be done in time for the next mission. You want to strip off its armor and replace it with ferro fibrous? Okay, well you need to be at facilities, it's gonna cost N c-bills/N resource points, and that 'mech will be in the shop for the next X missions. Fair balance between video game playability, the ability to have fun, and keeping the spirit.
"Ooh, you want four missiles in your mech instead of six? Sorry, you're gonna have to go buy a new giant robot."
That is one thing that's nice about MW4's hardpoint system. You can swap some stuff out, while still having the full, 100% modability in Clan mechs. Although it doesn't mean much if people just cram in as many large lasers or whatever the best DPS weapon of that game is.
Okay, I perused the OP and the pages I've missed since I last posted here.
Clearly I'm blind.
What's this about a MW2 remake beta??
That was the first game I bought on CD (before I even had a computer that could use it, but I had a friend that owned such a marvelous device) and I'd love to get an updated version that played as well or better.

Actually for a long while...
Anyway, if there were to be any modification system, something with strict limitations like the MW4 system would work best. Or, at least something that made it so turning an Urbanmech you salvaged in the first mission from its base design into a fast missile-boat meant it would only be ready at the very end of the game.
Both between the board and electronic games, the mech construction system like they had in MW2 just pretty much negated the whole reason for having multiple chassis' of the same weight (hitboxes aside). MW2 (or all of them, really) online generally turned into who could make the most munchkined-out designs.
As for mech modification rules themselves, the Boardgame has a system where there are different levels of modification, where it takes more time, and needed different facilities the more complex the modification is.
IE: simple weapon swap from, say, a medium laser to an ER medium laser could be done in a field base over the course of a day or two. Switching armor types, changing engine ratings, or a non-standard swap from one weapon type to another (IE: Autocannon -> LRM launcher) need a full on maintenance facility (like on a dropship) and take at least a few days. Modifying internal structure, engine types (IE: standard -> XL), gyros and whatnot need a full-on factory facility and take quite a long time.
Most of this results in the general quality of the mech going down, sometimes resulting in unit quirks (those would be fun if implemented) and other potentially nasty things.
Omnimechs work differently, as they can pretty much freely-swap out things that are pod-mounted, but anything that's hard-wired is difficult to work with.
Let's just say putting "Shutdown Sequence Overridden" in the thread title is beginning to look like a mistake on the pilot's part that is going to lead to combustion of his ammo.
Harmony gold is cockblocking the release of the game because the developers used designs from some archaic anime series (though, they weren't that old when they were taken by FASA)
Well, that's what you get when you kinda-sorta rip off Robotech/Macross.
(I realize it's more complicated than that, especially since FASA apparently purchased certain rights at some point possibly maybe, but they knew what they were getting themselves into.)
My most beloved 'Mechs are all free of this, but a MechWarrior game only suffers when there are fewer models available. And, in the end, you don't screw with Harmony Gold.

The Mechwarrior4 FREE release is still currently to be announced. MekTek had hoped to gain permission for the release while visiting Smith and Tinker, Inc. in Seattle this week. However, we have learned that Microsoft has endured several administrative changes which currently impede the release. The good news, however, is that a meeting to finalize the release is scheduled near the American Thanks Giving Holiday. Smith and Tinker said that it will only take 1-2 more days before permission is granted. From MekTek, we are happy to report that the release is ready and awaiting permission to push that big shiny green release button at MekTek headquarters.

I smell a [MECH ON] incoming.
I can hardly contain my excietment. Yep, everyone at the office is looking at me weird.
I think the guys at Mektek exactly what they were getting in to and decided that the risk that they wouldn't be able to come through on their promises wasn't large enough that they couldn't announce their plans. The game is still going to get released.

That said, I am only a clanner because they took the Urbanmech and made it better.

Well, if the last...let's see here, seven...MechWarrior games are anything to go by, it's not something I think they'll remove.
I'm not saying I'm certain they'll include it in MW1, given that it is set entirely in the IS, but the odds don't look too good.

The transition from "mod team" to "legitimate developer of licensed property" and all of the legalities therein was probably the biggest hurdle.
