I'm not that much of a gamer (been playing starcraft for the last 10 years or so) but I recently bought a macbook pro and finally have the hardware to play some of the games I've missed out on. Can you guys recommend any good PC FPS that have amazing stories (the type where you are absolutely taken in) ?

Do you have Boot Camp? Steam is a great place to find nice PC titles on the cheap, but it's Windows only.
Assuming you can run Windows, Bioshock. I can't think of a single game where the story pulled me in more.
If you haven't played it yet, pick up The Orange Box. It's a fanatastic deal, and Half-life 2, its expansions, and Portal are all classics.
The only RTS I've liked as much as star craft is Dawn of War and the winter assault and Dark Crusade expansions. If you get really sucked in by it soulstorm is good too but not really necessary to the experience.
FPS wise call of duty 4 has a solid single player, not a story that you'll get particularly immersed in but the multiplayer is by far the best I've ever played. It just works flawlessly.
If you want a shooter with an immersive storyline I would recommend the halo trilogy if you haven't already played it. I know you can get at least the first one on mac.
If he's missed every game for the last 10 years and is on a Mac, it's probably reasonable to look back to titles more recent than Bioshock and company.
Well, Ok, checking the Mac Store there's Prey, Call of Duty 2, Doom 3 and Quake 4 and I know that Return to Wolfenstein was released on the Mac.
Anyway, apparently there's an EVE client for Mac now so if you'll excuse me I'm going to go and see if it runs on the PowerPCs (probably not, but a man can dream).
I stopped playing with North American players on Starcraft in '03. The typical NR15 and build games got a bit dull so I started dicking around on korean B-net. I got my ass handed to me for about 5 years and am only starting to throw down with their amateur mid-tier players. The last game as Terran I was defeated by 8 zerglings when I had full fleets of battle cruisers. Those korean players know how to keep things interesting...
Anyways, thanks for the recs, I will look into them. I can run PC games on my Mac through bootcamp. A friend just dropped me a note telling me to play Crysis, is it good ?
Buuutttt I have a question about speeding up my pro (2009.5 15-inch: 2.66GHz, 4GB ram). After browsing through the mac forums alot of people are recommending a upgrade from the standard hard drive to a Intel Solid State Drive. Will there be a noticeable difference if I were to fork out for one of these or if I were to upgrade the ram to 8 GB ?
NOLF and NOLF2, Deus Ex, Half-Life and Half-Life 2, Bioshock, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Zeno Clash, Portal, Minerva: Metastasis, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, Thief and Thief 2, Call of Duty 1 and 2 (plus United Offensive) and I guess 4...
If you're looking for a great story and for something life changing (it should radically change the way you think about video games, at least), Portal is the only answer.
Yeah throw me in the pile with all the thief, half life, STALKER, etc crowd. All good recommendations in the thread so far.
I just want to add two things - System Shock 2 and Soldier of Fortune 2.
SS2 has a good story, nice high difficulty, RPG elements like inventory and skill points, and just might scare the shit out of you. This is the spiritual predecessor of Bioshock, which I haven't played, but I've heard derided at times for its laughable difficulty level.
SOF2 is a bit lighter on the story side but has to be my favorite FPS of all time. Great single player, and 5 on 5 multiplayer elimination matches are the most fun I've had with an FPS. There's even still a small but active online community, if you can find a game that isn't full of bots.

The Orange Box (in particular: Half Life 2, Episode 1 & 2, Portal).
While some have aged better than others, these would represent the non-MMO games that I feel have changed my life as a gamer over the years. If you wanted to go really retro, you could hunt down X-Wing / TIE Fighter and/or Crusader: No Remorse / No Regret, but that might be going above and beyond.
Final Fantasy 7 is enjoyable, but I didn't find it worth all the hype it got, possibly due to a nigh-relentless love of FF 4 and 6 (2 and 3 here in North America), but obviously one of those is available on PC without an emulator, and the others aren't.

SOF2 is still totally fun and awesome and I second this.

But you bought a Mac so, uh, Marathon?
Have you played Civilization IV?

Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
Oh shit, I have failed this thread.
Fuck yes, Deus Ex.
I even played that on a Mac.

There's even a native Mac version but IIRC it runs on Classic/PPC only.
Bootcamp your way into Win7 and play it there if you have to, but you must play this game.

Yes, but you've only got a 9600GT, so enjoy low-detail mode.

I still have my Mac copy. Played that so much first year university.
I played Crysis on High with a 9600GT, and it ran quite well.
Obviously the rest of the hardware in the Macbook is going to matter as well, of course.
I don't think his life needs that much changing.
Half Life 1 & 2
If you can stand first-person sneakers...
And I think that pretty much sums it up.

Or that kind of changing (read: for the worse).
Portal is a great game, though kind of short, and not really FPS... at least not in the traditional sense.
The Call of Duty games are pretty intense.
Diablo 2.
X-Com.
Bioshock.
The Orange Box (in particular: Half Life 2, Episode 1 & 2, Portal).
