I am getting an E 74 error when I start it up and according to the support site it is a general hardware failure. Is there any way to fix this? If not what is the best way to replace it? Can it be repaired by someone who knows what they are doing? Also I let my friend borrow it for two weeks while I was away and this is the first time I have turned it on since I got back. He said he only used it once, no idea if that is true or not. Would it be a bad idea to ask him about it or even ask him to pay for a new one? I told him that if he breaks it he has to buy me one but this problem seems like it could just have happened on its own.

Not on your own, aside from getting lucky by jiggling it, unplugging and replugging it.

Buy an Arcade System and swap the old HDD into it.

    Yes, unfortunately, that's only Microsoft.

It's happening a lot, at random, not usually due to external damage. Just moving it could've been enough, as E74 is usually heat stress related. The very, very slim chance your friend broke it isn't worth getting mad at him about it.

How old is the xbox? If its still in the 3 year warranty then send it back for a free repair an no harm done. To be honest your friend probably did break it but it could have happened to anyone, it probably just fucked up when he was playing a game with it.

I am not sure if my xbox is under warranty, I bought it used from a friend over two years ago so it will be real close to three years.

In that case do what I did, just go get an arcade. Buying 360's second hand isn't really a good idea because the damn things are so fragile, you don't know how the last owner treated it.

As I said it's up to you if you want to try and get your friend to admit fault for breaking the old one but I wouldn't bother. I doubt he was doing anything irresponcible when it broke, both my old ones broke just from playing games.

It doesn't hurt to call 1-800-4MYXBOX, give them the serial number and find out if it's still under warranty too.

Just got done talking with microsoft and my xbox is under warranty still but it is going to take 3 weeks to get a new one they said. Oh well at least I do not have to pay for a new one.

Thats pretty fortunate, I believe that means you get another year added to your warranty after the repair too.

Yeah, that happened with me, too. I had to phone twice, because the girl on the phone when I first called, I didn't set up a repair, but the second time, I did. I just told the person the second time, "I got the E74 error, and on your website, you suggest these things. Well I did all of those things and I still got the error." They emailed me a prepaid return slip and I just printed it out yesterday.

They don't still send out boxes, do they?
