Yo dawgs we doin' a contest where people create superheroes but we need themes! In this thread you will vote on themes narrowed down from a list of seventy-one possibilities into an inconceivably clever list of nineteen.
I'm going to open the first contest on Monday! This poll will determine the first bunch of contests we do! Vote early, vote once, goddammit, I'm turning on public voting so we will know if you lied.
Here is the list:
Result of super-soldier program funded by Columbian drug lords
"B List" Heroes/Villains i.e. less powerful but still interesting characters such as Daredevil, Booster Gold, etc
Ridiculous Silver Age origin
Least Likely Horror Monster to Become a Superhero
Inspired by Folk Tales, Myths, and Legends
Best Application of Real, Current Science
It Came From The Year 2000 (hero from what people in the 50s thought the future would look like) Super-Powered Pets and the People who love them.
God, My Alter-Ego is a Douchebag (the hero or civilian identity is a tool, either by choice, psychosis, or body exchanging)
Superhero condemned to be forever mocked for one dickish thing they did in a badly-written story arc
Together, they fight crime (C-List heroes only, no fully competent people allowed)
"Summoning them was cheaper than hiring movers..."
I Bought My Grimoire From Barnes & Noble
National Treasures: Government sponsored superhero of any Nation of your choosing except the US
Gifts From Fickle Gods: Powers are a privilege, not a right.
No Budget Superheroes: Powers Below The Poverty Line
I Was Built To Be a Children's Toy; Now I Fight Crime
It's Like I Hit The Jackpot: Superpowers And A Debilitating Psychosis
These theme names are more "clever" than they are informative
Room for interpretation is a good thing.
See, I prefer different interpretations of "stricter" theme than just unnecessary vagueness.
I don't even know what "Summoning them was cheaper than hiring movers..." is supposed to mean.
I'd take that to mean any of a number of powers or skills that would involve utilizing minions. You could be a mad scientist with tons of tiny robots, a Gepetto-type with a legion of toy soldiers, a Pied Piper, a rabbi with golems, a mole king with mole men, or whatever.
"Dickish thing" is awful as far as a theme goes because you can insert a dickish moment anywhere, it's not really something you build a character around
I don't see enough love for "Gifts From Fickle Gods: Powers are a privilege, not a right"
I'll make it worth your while. I'm willing to issue a handwritten and signed certificate stating that the bearer is in possession of 2 e-kudos from me, TeaSpoon, to anyone who helps me make this theme the winner. If you can get friends to vote for it too, I'll even get it notarized.
nothing like a horrible accident that should electrocute/suffocate/compress you to a singularity but instead gives you awe-inspiring powers over the very forces of that cruel bitch mother nature

Hi-5!
Man, I had a bunch of entries make it into the top 20, including this one. However, I'm still trying to wrack my brain to figure out a super power that would be awesome to have but hard to draw. I want to see how everyone else solves that problem.
Well, its so hard to choose just one. I'm kind of assuming that after all this effort, the topics not picked would go through to the next Create a Hero for voting?

Why are myths and legends so ridiculously popular?
I would assume because people have pitches in mind of it? Personally it feels sort of warmed over to me, what with Fables and Thor and Hercules and so on so creating an interesting character out of the deal would seem to be somewhat difficult. And picking a very obscure legend is like... I dunno... counter intuitive? If I have to look it up on google, does it still resonate like seeing familiar faces?
My guess is again based on a potential `Penny Arcade Universe'. If thats what people are thinking/hoping will result from all this, you really want to get a couple of mainstream guys in place to set the scene, and Silver Age or Myths are probably the best categories to do that.
"God, My Alterego is a douchebag", "B-list heroes/villains" and "Superpowers and debilitating psychosis" are hardly likely to result in the sort of hero you would want to make central in a powered universe.

True, but there is a lot of good material to mine, and I think it would be a good starting point.
However, my vote is for the last remaining idea of mine in place: Super-pets
I can't wait to unleash "Danger Dachshund, the Wild Weiner Warrior" on the forums.

As it is I'm going to have to do the poverty line one
By night he fights crime, by day he goes to the doctor and pays out the butt because he has no insurance
I want to make the Granadan Grenadier
Room for interpretation is a good thing.

yeah, I...yeah
there were like seventy of these and the ones that weren't trying to be clever were like "use the origin types from city of heroes"

And if you don't like it, then don't vote for it.

I was the only one that thought "No Budget Superheroes: Powers Below The Poverty Line" is a great idea!?
Shit yes it is
He came from outer space!

Stan Lee voted in the runoffs like seventy-two times.
So there.
He also may or may not be a camel, and have a ridiculous origin. Camels are hard to draw, right?
