Best Cover Artist basically isn't a competition. Even when JG Jones did basically a cover a week for a year (and they were all pretty great), I think Jean won it. Not that his stuff isn't great, but he's not the only one to put out great work.
I've never really cared about the Eisners, largely because I've never seen the accompanying awards ceremony, never seen anyone talk about winning an Eisner, and generally forget the award exists until someone on a forum brings them up.
I wonder if we'll see kids as Rorschach this year.
I had two five year olds sitting in front of me in the theater when I saw Watchmen.
Haha
Their parents were in for a surprise treat that movie.
Probably but not neccessarily.
The second or third night Borat was playing, I was in a sold-out theater next to a 45ish year old man and his 8ish year old son. And it was really clear that he knew what he was getting into. I was creeped out the entire duration of the film.

I mean, I loved 52, and the covers were great, but if one guy is the best and continues to put out the best quality product, he's going to win. Did he win... last year I want to say? I thought he lost one year since he's been doing Fables.

Jean has monopolized the cover category since 2004. He is the Roger Federer of covers.

Willingham has won for:
Best short story 2007 (Frog's from the 1001 GN)
Best serialized story 2003, 2005, 2006
Best new series 2003
Best Anthology 2007 (1001)
and then the best writer this year. He's probably a fine choice given that he almost always writes the best comic that gets put out each month.

People saying Fables is the best book each month is like people saying Invincible is the best book each month
Well maybe not that bad
It's not that it's offensively bad it's just so....not good
There was some cool shit in the beginning but I maintain my position that the climax of the series was the Battle for Fabletown
Specifically the panel where Froggy went a'courtin' and he did ride the cow that jumped over the moon, a sword and a pistol and a bucket of hand grenades by his side

Not really. It slowed down for a bit. And didn't win awards (aside from covers I think). Then it picked up to awesomeness for several years. There have been few books that have been competitive the last 3-4 years. Astonishing for a while, All Star Superman obviously, even though it comes out like 5 times a year, but really, not many have been consistently awesome every month.

I think Willingham is doing a good job moving the book into Empire Strikes Back territory. The frist act is done as he says, the Empire is defeated, now a new bigger threat emerges that, for all the bad the Empire did, kept in check.
The Literals arc should have flopped but it was one of the best stories of the year.
Fables is always a treat, and Jack of Fables is a nice desert to the main course.
This new novel, from the chapter that was given away in the $1.00 Fables trial book, seems to be pretty good as well.
the honorary eisner is for being half of avatar books' output

Good call on IIF TLB.
The funny thing is now that Herbie won the Eisner, you'll have to come up with something else that should win an Eisner. Maybe Haunted: Best new series?

Carey should've gotten something for Hellblazer but that was three years ago that that wrapped up
Transhuman even though that was a mini
Carey probably should have had a mention at some point. Transhuman wouldn't have competed against Fables (wrong category). GR was good, but not that good.

Homelands is one of the best stories I've ever read. If you like Princess Bride, you'll like that arc.
I can't wait for the Cinderella mini coming out this year.
And hey, Daniel Acuna is the new X-Men Legacy artist. I like the guy's work, so that should be a treat.
As good as some of the stories are in Fables, let's not have any illusions about the dialogue. It's stilted 100% of the time, and if it didn't have pretty good art and a solid story behind it, it would be a big deal. But when the story hits a lull, like it did in the last trade, it's really tough to read.

and yes Jean totally beat out JG Jones when they were both nominated
pretty sure he's won it before for Fables

how is the ratio of punching to stilted dialogue

But then it started to slide and it's just been very meh
It's not even that it's bad just that it's bland and boring

John's an asshole who gets into some deep shit and he comes out on top by double-crossing and backstabbing and fucking people over
I literally just described 257 comics for you
And yet somehow that formula is infinitely more interesting than Fables
Every time Fables had something cool my apathy vanished for about eight seconds and then nope still not enough to make this not boring
