I need mindless action in a persistent'ish world

Alright guys, I need some help. I generally considered myself pretty knowledgable about the games out there and what fits my taste, but I have this itch and I can't seem to find the place to scratch.

I'm itching for an action based game in a persistent world. It doesn't have to be MMO - persistent but stat tracking is nice.

I could go two ways - First person shooter. Ala' Battlefield 2

Or swath through 100 monsters in a hack n'slash. Ala' Diablo maybe (Titan's Quest?')?

I've played a lot games. I have a good PC and an Xbox.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

    Fallout 3

Persistent world, and if you take the perk (upgrade) that makes you find approximately 10x the ammo in every crate, you'll have no shortage of ordinance with which to blow shit up.

Check out the FO3 thread in G&T and make sure you read the second post regarding mods - you can install an "Increased Spawns" to give you more chaos.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.

When you say persistent, what are you referring to exactly? That you can make changes to the world and those changes stick? Or that you're changing and evolving your character in this open world?

Option 2, a growing character, either through ranking or an RPG style. Fallout 3 is a great suggestion, I'm past the original campaign and pretty close to the end of the main quests in the expansion... I should go finish that.

The Painkiller series is great Gauntlet Legends FPS sorts of fun.

Trine is a great action game. It's a platformer, but it's challenging and entertaining enough to last for two days. Very charming experience and the combat isn't half-bad. Really.

    FEAR 2

    Rainbow Six Vegas (and 2)

I'd recommend renting Far Cry 2. You don't level up per se, but do you unlock better equipment as you go and it has a huge, beautiful world in which to engage in mindless action.

I say renting because unfortunately it suffers from Assassin's Creed syndrome: it's awesome until you get sick of doing the exact same few number of mission types over and over. Do check it out, though.

    Crackdown?

Explosions, guns, cars, jumping over buildings, punching dudes so hard they fly into the ocean.

And your characters skills increase the more you play!

Far Cry 2 was great, but it ended up exactly as you said. Repetitive as shit.

I second Crackdown. You'll level up and be more badass as the game goes on. And you can be sure the action is super mindless, but fun. Prototype is similar, but takes itself a bit too seriously if you ask me.

These are great suggestions. I've played Crackdown quite a bit on release.

I guess when I say persistent'ish I'm referring to the multiplayer being active.

Crackdown would be good, but all my friends are hooked on WoW. So i'm trying to find a 'community' to get into.

sacred 2 is really fun if you enjoy single screen co-op.

Prototype is pretty cool, and unlike some other open world games I could name, you actually get rewarded for doing random stuff. It also has plenty of upgradeable powers.

Red Faction: Guerrilla. Action and explosions abound, and it's even persistent in that the shit you blow up stays blowed up.

Titan Quest + Expansion seconded. Or you could just play Diablo 2 again (new patch coming next month supposedly!). Both excellent options, and cheap too!
