Dear fellow PA-forumers,
Long story short, I am in need of some assistance in picking out several books for a good friend of mines that live in China. She is 23, a year younger than i am, and an avid bookreader and i would like to get her something interesting.
From what i gather on her taste of books, she:
-enjoys learning about the world. loves books detailing the solar system, famous people of the world, unsolved mysteries, etc. she knows alot about everything despite not binging on documentaries and wikipedia like me. however, she has hinted that she has become somewhat bored of the repetitive nature of newer editions of those kind of books going over mostly the same things.
-liked the twilight series
? mentions she has been into vampire stuff these last few weeks
-put off reading harry potter until all the novels were released, then purchased them all only to read the first novel and then stop. do not remember reason, might be lack of interest.
There is a great deal of missing information on my part as to her likes and dislikes any suggestions of good reads are also welcome. I am thinking of a well known and interesting book from the west that is not typically mentioned in China but anything is good.
One of my old time favorites, 1984, came to mind. However, i recall a bunch of straightforward doodads about orgasms and sex that although i am completely comfortable with, may be/is rather hush hush hand-slappy-ish in this Country. Because of this, i am not entirely sure of the novel's giftability.
I guess that's all the information i can provide. Surprisingly, there is quite a wide range of translated novels ranging from the Starcraft novels to Aurelius's Meditiations in Beijing (where ill be staying these few days), so any obscure book may be possible to be found translated, although mainstream books are still best. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks ahead of time for your helpful advice(s). Cheers.

Also, if she likes humor I'd recommend the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, those are always funny and usually parallel some sort of catastrophe or dilemma in our world.
The only other book I can recommend that I really enjoyed was "Call Me Ishmael," honestly one of the best books I've ever read.
Edit: Also, Beijing sucks. Shanghai is the best city in China ;P
Just be careful about Interesting Times.
"If you want to shop, go to Shanghai. If you want to see sights, visit Beijing. If you want to eat great food, go to Guangzhou."
I believe those are the blood books by Tanya Huff, Blood Pact, Blood Debt, Blood Price, etc etc. They're actually not very racy (but I haven't seen the television series).
