Returning gamer - Xbox 360 - Reccomendations?

edited July 2009 in Games and Technology
Hey there guys,

I've been out of the gaming world for about 3 years now. My last console was an Xbox, but around the launch of the latest generation of consoles I began Med School and made the wise decision to drop gaming (PC included) in order to make the best of the social side of uni and in order to reduce any distractions from my studies.

However, now I've found I have more free time in the evenings and I would really like to start gaming again before I graduate and that chance slips away completely.

I've tended to be a PC gamer in the past, but I'm in not in a position to buy a new PC just for gaming (my old one being too basic for most newer games), so I thought Xbox 360 for 2 reasons really; Halo 2 and GoW.

Seeing as I've been out of this community for a long time, I don't know many other games I should be looking to get. I'd say I'm open to most genres, and I'd ideally like 1 or 2 decent multiplayer games too (most of my friends are rubbish and uninterested in none sports games so I'll likely get a tennis and/or FIFA/Pro Evo game for their sakes). I really enjoyed KOTOR on Xbox and wouldn't mind similarly good RPGs if there are any out there.

Basically, i'm open to everything, and I'd appreciate all opinions. I'd also like to mention that they don't have to be new or recently released games either, and I'll hopefully be getting the 60GB Premium version.

    Slash Signal!

In particular, I'm of the opinion that Prince of Persia, The Orange Box, and Oblivion are pretty rad. Also, Rock Band 2 with friends will eat up hours and hours of time. That disk pretty much never came out of the Xbox 360 in my floor's lounge.

If you're open for Xbox live arcade games, check out Geometry Wars 2, N+, Braid, and Bionic Commando Rearmed.

    Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

If you ever played a Banjo Kazooie, it's like a trip down memory lane with an awesome vehicle editor. It really is a blast to just design, test, and ultimately use your own vehicles to complete challenges.

    Battlefield 1943

It's only 1200 Microsoft Funbucks and is well...Battlefield 1942. If you're familiar with BF games then you won't need any more explanation. It isn't BF1942, but it is a very well condensed facsimile of it. And a fun one at that.

2K got a 2-fer package of Bioshock and Oblivion (no expansion) for around $35 or so.

If you're near a Fry's you can get some deals on stuff. Crackdown + Perfect Dark 0 or Dark Sector for like $25. Crackdown is worth that alone, worth more if you plan with a friend online.

Oh, and Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is going to be an Arcade release next week as well.

Yeah, just because you're PC may be a little long in the tooth, that doesn't mean that it has to be out of play. I just picked up Descent 1 and 2 off of www.gog.com and it's probably the best way to spend 5.99 that I can think of these days. All of their games are patched up and ready to play on modern Operating Systems, so you don't have to worry about that either. It's a really convenient service and the games are completely DRM free. You buy the games and can download them off their site any time, for ever. Go check it out. I guarantee you that you will find at least two or three old favorites for stupid cheap. They've got Fallout 1 and 2, Freespace 1 and 2 and a slew of other classics as well.

This is why you should be wary of anyone's recommendations. You come in saying you haven't been gaming in a while, and like KOTOR, Halo, and Gears.... and this guy recommends a hardcore 2d fighter?? That's still $60??

Honestly, just play demos, read reviews, and get what interests you. Review aggregators are flawed in a lot of ways, but something like Gamerankings' list of top-rated 360 games does make a good starting place for something like this. That slash link is a good summary, too (taken with a large grain of salt). And buy stuff that's cheap - no reason to pay $60 for a new game when you've missed out on tons of great titles that are now $30 or less.

The only exception is multiplayer games--for those, you want to make sure there are still people playing them online, obviously. Every week they post a list of the top 10 played titles on majornelson.com. Any game on that list will still have a sizable online community. You can also ask about any specific game here to make sure.

Yes, I will second Brym. There are amazing games from the past years that will give you plenty of play on the cheap. Mass Effect is an easy example, also the Oblivion/Bioshock value pack. There's reall no reason dumping 60 bucks into a niche game. Additionally, Microsoft puts up demos of pretty much everything, and I implore you to check them out.

    Rez HD
    Bionic Commando Rearmed
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

    Geometry Wars 2
    Braid

Not a complete list, obviously, but these games are nice and cheap and you can download demos of all of them.

With all the demos of actual 360 games, XBLA games, and Community Games available, I'm starting to wonder how many hours of entertainment there actually are for a person who just never buys any games for their 360. I'll bet you could enjoy at least a month.

The problem is when you get attached to a certain game's demo.

The minor price-difference between a Premium and Elite is worth it to get a 120gb instead, since you can install games to the hard-drive and in a few months you can buy 360-games digitally.
Edi for below: ahh that sucks, around here (across the pond) its around £40-50 difference.

Cheers everyone, appreciate all the advise!

Jelloblimp - The Elite is £60 (roughly $100) more than the Premium, hence why I don't think I'll be dropping the extra money on it! It was only £30 more recently, but the price was bumped back up before I could take advantage.

Skip Gears of War 1, and get Gears 2. The missed storyline doesn't matter, and Horde mode is worth the $40 price tag all by itself. Buy new to get the free Flashback maps.

Call of Duty 4 and World At War. Get both. Modern Warfare has an incredible campaign that you don't want to miss even if you're holding out for the sequel. And World At War improves on the multiplayer, in my opinion as a tremendous fan of both games. It also adds the awesome zombies co-op mode.

Fallout 3. As someone who loved the first two dearly, I can honestly say, this is the game that defines the series for me now. It's that good.

Grid. Awesome racing game, and I don't even generally like racing games. It does a lot of different types of racing, and does them all well. With ultra-slick presentation and an involving career mode.

Earth Defense Force: 2017. Best split-screen co-op game ever, but still epic when played solo.

Condemned 2. Creepy, atmospheric brawler/shooter. Don't watch any youtube clips, don't read about it, just buy it.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The closest any Star Wars material in recent memory has come to doing the Trilogy justice. Also, a very solid action game, despite some of the grumbles you may have heard about difficulty spikes, which have been smoothed out in an update. Just don't go blowing money on the Jedi Temple DLC, it's garbage.

Bioshock. If you are remotely on the fence about this one, download the demo. Trust me.

Assassin's Creed. You may have heard the side missions are repetitive. You heard right. But you don't need to do a ton of them to move the story forward, and the plot missions are great.

Mirror's Edge. Unique, genre-defying game. Great platforming challenges and chases.

Grand Theft Auto IV. You've played GTA games, I'm sure. This one looks better, plays better, and has a more interesting protagonist. Multiplayer kinda sucks, though.

Cheers guys, just an update; got a Xbox 60GB yesterday, only bought GoW with it in the shop besides the bundle games (Trivial Pursuit, Connect 4 and Burnout Paradise - I know the former two are crap but it still makes the most money sense as I got an extra controller too). I'll be buying the others through the net as it's cheaper. So far I've ordered Mass Effect, Oblivion, Halo 3, with Bioshock and Fallout 3 being bought soon (ebay). These will take make a little while to complete and by then the newer games should hopefully be a little cheaper (I'll most likely buy them via eBay too).

    Back to Gears...
