[EVE ON] EVE: Rokh Out With Your Cokh Out

2006.jpg
(No longer quite as epic as the old picture, but this is a picture of Merch Industrial's mighty Wangfleet returning home after doleing out some harshness to our hated foes; therefore, it is superior. To see a chart of ships in EVE, click here. To see the ships to scale with the Titans, click here.)

What is EVE Online?

i]Concept[/i
EVE Online is a MMORPG in space with player's avatars as space ships and portraits with freedom to wage wars, be industrialist, or blow up other people's ships.

i]The Player[/i
Characters are based on individual skills, and skill training is time based, so you set a skill to be trained and in a certain amount of seconds, minutes, hours, days, whatever, then the skill will level up. Skill training still continues when you are logged off. Therefore, there is no need to grind monsters for experience to reach some level cap. Effectively, there is no cap to a character because it would take many many years to train them all. It is, however, also relatively easy for newer players to catch up to the veterans because each ship can only use so many of your total skills at once (maxed out skills in Amarrian Battleships won't help you much when you're in a Gallente Frigate, after all), and there is a cap on how high a skill can be trained.

EVE is a sand box with the opportunity for the player to do anything they would like. There are no professions that are set in stone, so if you'd like to mine one day and then kill some people who are mining the next day, then so be it. Professions are labels that are acknowledged by the player and not the game. Many people ask how they can become a pirate or bounty hunter, but in reality of the game, the player is whatever the player believes they are.

i]PVP[/i

There are few restrictions on PvP which means non-consensual combat is encouraged, although there are ways to be safe, as well. If your spaceship is destroyed, then it is gone and does not simply respawn. You would have to buy another spaceship; however this also applies to other players that you kill. There are regions of space like Empire that are relatively safe, and regions of space like 0.0 that are no-holds-bar battlefields. However, in some occasions like war, no where is safe.

i]Economy[/i
So with spaceships blowing up left and right, EVE has a player driven economy and market. It can be profitable to acquire minerals and make ships or ship modules (equipment) using blueprints, and sell to the market. Or you can just mine for minerals and sell those to players who manufacture that are too lazy to mine for themselves. There are many different ways to get money.

i]The World[/i
The world of EVE is on a single server, which means everyone is playing with everyone. So far, EVE has had up to 30,000 consecutive players playing. If you're (in)famous in the server, you're (in)famous throughout the entire game.

The map of the world is also player driven, with regions of space that are conquerable by player alliances.
evemap1210.jpg
(Updated: 12/10/06. This is a map created by a player, Joshua Foiritain, of regions that alliances control. The latest map is here. And note with the inclusion of the new regions the map is almost too big to properly shrink to acceptable size for 1024 resolution.)

The Path to Kali

Kali, the codename for EVE's next large three part expansion, has already begun to see release. Kali will be separated into three stages.

Kali 1: (Revelations, released November 2006) Focus on the enhancement of game play and current systems.
- Contracts as an improvement of current Escrow and Courier system.
- Seamless map, zooming from the perspective of the ship, to solar system, to the universe.
- Combat Organization, a reorganization of the gang system into fleets, squadrons, and wings.
- Exploration in solar systems to key points also with the help of improved scanning and probing.
- Invention as a supplement to R&D (research and development) and manufacturing, but not as a replacement.
- Improve resources and benefits of 0.0 regions of space
- Salvaging of ship wrecks to gain extra materials for creating rigs that improve space ships.
- 8 new space ships (4 Battlecruisers, 4 Battleships) and 8 new 0.0 regions of space.

Kali 2: (Coming early 2007 probably) Focus on enhancing warfare.
- Factional Warfare, having the NPC empires of space fight against each other. Used to ease new players into alliance warfare.
- Improved starbase warfare, station warfare, constellation sovereignty, upgradable outposts, corporation and alliance improvements

Kali 3: (Mid 2007?) Focus on enhancing graphics.
- New ship models.
- New textures.

Sweet god, those are pretty ass screenshots... but does the game look that nice in motion?

You bet your ass.

Pretty much the penultimate EVE Online trailer is available here:

EVE Never Fades

Note that if you right-click Save As, you'll need to rename the file from default.asp. Don't worry, it still downloads the movie just fine.

The short trailer for the most recent expansion is here:

EVE Online: Revelations

Finally, an older trailer which also gives a decent idea of the scope of EVE (although the interface shown in the video is hideously out of date) is available here:

The Caldari Outlaw

By the way: all footage, with the exception of the painting at the start of EVE Never Fades, is from the game client. All models, all lighting, everything. All of those shots are 100% possible in-game.

And it's only going to get better.

Demonstration video for the new ship graphics coming in Kali 3

So I'd like to play... What do I do?

Free fourteen day trials are available by clicking this sentence. No emailing other members necessary, no credit card necessary.

Creating a new character may be a little overwhelming at first. Attributes are important only for decreasing the amount of time a particular skill trains. So, if Perception is high, training for flying space ships finishes faster. A plan many like is to average all attributes besides Charisma, because Charisma is semi-useless. This will create a balanced character that doesn't take too long to train anything.

There are 4 races to choose from and have no difference besides starting attributes, skills, and portrait. (As of Revelations, they also have some different starting skills but these don't tend to vary too wildly.) Note that any character can fly any ship of any race, but I will briefly describe the race's type of ships.

Amarr - Lasers and armor tank (Some ships use missles, some ships specialize in drones). Lasers do not require ammo, but use crystals which can be quickly swapped for different optimal ranges. Lasers do EM/Thermal damage. Most Amarr ships have few mid slots for EW (Electronic Warfare).
Caldari - Missles, shield tank, and ECM (Some ships use hybrid turrets). Missles take time to fly to hit their mark, but do static damage of a single type. Also, it is hard to dodge missles. ECM jams the targetted ship's targetting so the jammed ship cannot target anything.
Gallente - Hybrid turrets, drones, armor tank. Hybrid turrets focus on dealing Kinetic/Thermal damage but the blaster version is the most damaging turret in the game, but has very low range. Drones are like pets that you can control that fly in space and shoot things.
Minmatar - Jack of all trades, speedy, projectile turrets and everything else but laser and hybrid turrets. Their ships use different kinds of everything, but they're fast. Artillery projectile turrets are long range snipers that have good alpha strike but deal poor damage over time.

Do the tutorial. It's long, but well worth the effort. The game is complex and overwhelming, the tutorial helps to teach a lot of the game mechanics.

20061118002811lu7.jpg

Is there a PA corporation?

You bet your ass.

Merch Industrial [MRCHI] is headed by CEO Rathstern Executus. (All hail to the Father for he is wise and good and doles out the shinies.)
MRCHI does everything and allows everything, except blatant piracy. The corp is meant to be new player friendly so the rules are not extremely strict strict. MRCHI primarily engages in mining and manufacturing and other industrialist things.

However, there is one rule which is harshly enforced: no pirating. Which means no aggression on neutrals. Break this rule while wearing MRCHI tags once and you'll get in deep shit. Break this rule several times and the Wangfleet will come for your ass while the 24 hour cooldown to kick someone from the corp counts down.

To join, just ask on the PennyArcade chat channel and someone would be willing to help. If not, you can fly to a station that has a MRCHI corp office and send an application there.

Kor-Azor Prime IV (Eclipticum) - Moon Griklaeum - Ishukone Corporation Factory
Ishisomo VIII - Propel Dynamics Factory
Hoshoun VII - Moon 17 - Imperial Armaments Warehouse
Slays V - Moon 1 - Ducia Foundry Mineral Reserve
Mista V - Moon 4 - Ishukone Corporation Factory

Exciting stuff happens at the headquarters of Hoshoun. That's where most of the business is handled.

And finally, two last items of business...

You don't have to read this thread from start to finish and don't be afraid to ask questions!

There's a new chart with the new ships on but it doesn't show titans

Also, I just found an EM shield rig II and an electronics CPU reduction rig II bpc in an archaeology site, in about 45 mins total from when I arrived in the system. Everyone knocking exploration can fuck off.

[edit] Oddjob you're doing it wrong, you need to use an Apoc for that. 8 miner 2s plus a tank and you outmine a Retriever.

I dont have the bling for an Apoc. I already had the Miner II's for the 'geddon, and a LARII and 100AB II so the 60m for the ship was all I needed. I wonder how many miners I could fit on an Abbadon.

Toast, linky and I'll add it to the OP.

Also, editing the OP with the one thing I really wanted to add: links to some of my favorite CCP trailers, and a video from Fanfest 2006 showing off the new ship models for some Gallente ships.

WRT trailers I really like the Revelations one - I think in some ways it's almost better than ENF, much as I think the latter is much the best general introduction to Eve

EVE Never Fades is my favorite, simply because like no other video before or since it so fully encapsulates the essence of what EVE is all about. The Revelations trailer is just "Oh here's new ships and lol the Ragnarok is teh cool with the superweapon Battlestar Galactica music lol."

Also, holy jesus the Hyperion really is the biggest Battleship now  Adding to OP.

I agree that ENF is a much better "this is Eve" video - I don't think it'll ever be topped in that regard. I just think that the Revelations trailer does a very good job of building to a specific emotional climax, and does a better job of representing fleet combat than anything else to date too.

Well, because they really aren't inhabited, at least not very much. With no outposts in any of the new regions, real colonization has been limited to the edges, with small groups living out of POSs further in.

Also, :^: to the new thread title.

Can you sign up for multiple accounts with the same email address? I did a trial back in June, and want to do another one now that Revelations is out. I assume I will need to use a different username for the account. If not, I'll probably end up forking over the $20 rather than going through the hassle of setting up another email account that I'll never use.
