Common term for that is "resident" if you're being nice or "pet"/"slave" if you're not, and it generally gets you lumped in with the claiming corp politically
It's permanent as long as the Goons can hold on to it.
I don't see the Goons' policy interfering with Merch Industrial's policy. It's their sovereignty so they're just protecting it. Ideally, Merch Industrial won't have to PvP at all.
And to clarify, Merch Industrial will still be independant. We're not actually joining any alliance here. It's more of a business agreement. We get access to their space and belts, we then build and sell stuff to them.
That's a pretty nice deal, considering that many independent corps have to pay rent for that sort of thing. Did Vorick ever get that carrier he was talking about before I left? Cause if not, you guys should start thinking about getting one, if only for jump-ferrying stuff to and from empire.
Well it's not an astounding effort to take a hauler full of crap to jita while afk. Also the competitive mineral market there is another reason, and a big one I think.. obviously cargo scanners and roid scanners are crap, but for everything else, a increase in mineral prices and selling other mods at base price could be the difference between selling 5 missions worth of loot for 1.5mil and for selling them for 2million.
500,000 isn't enough of a return on the effort and time to sail the 15 odd jumps up from Hosh to Jita. I could make three or four times that just killing rats in Hosh in the same amount of time.
Can you tell I started out life in EVE as a merchant? To me, everything is a time vs profit equation.
No one's expecting you guys to participate in any wars or anything, you're here to do whatever it is you said you'd do and not anything else. And so far, that's all production stuff.
But, hey, if some guys want to shoot some shit, pretty sure you'd be welcome to do so.

Oh, there are stipulations. We can't mine certain minerals, can't rat where Goons are ratting, etc. We also have to produce a quota of ice (for which we'll be properly paid and is one of our primary purposes for the Goons allowing us in SP) in order to continue residing there. Ideally we'll be able to set up operations in new space nearby in the future when we can afford our own station(s) and such.
Yup, the way I understand it is that if you want to head out and kill shit you need only ask in any of our channels. Otherwise you're just here to do whatever you feel like doing, hopefully this will be mutually beneficial.
And really.
It's Goonfleet guys, we love to loose ships, as long as you build them we'll buy them. Maybe our business deal will blossom into a fullblown friendship in time. Who knows?
Ugh yeah I'm just a lousy soldier, so I don't know much about stipendiouslisations.
Also here's some videos made by a guy names Stahlregen ingame. He's awesome and the movies are cool.
You actually can rat where goons are ratting, as long as they don't mind sharing the system.
I'm sure most won't kick you out unless it's crowded, but it's better on yourself to pick systems with lots of asteroid belts off of the beaten path a little, just because the popular systems are so crowded all the time. People are too damn lazy to set up their own safespots or GSCs, so there's great systems out there that no one ever uses because they're like 8 jumps away from any station. Goons are lazy, take advantage of it.
From what I have heard Goons are not evil bastards, so I doubt one would go out of their way to mess up your ratting, I mean even if you are fighting valuable rats I'm sure 90% of the time they will warp into the belt, see you, maybe give a hello, then warp to the next one. It's not going to be some huge impass.
As for the mining regulations, I think maybe a bit harsh, certainly in no way enforcable, but just them protecting their assets as it were. I mean this is their system that they worked for so they can do whatever they want.
As I see it, it's a pretty damn good deal, but not the 'fabled land' that some people were prophesising. I mean it's good, but not 'Oh my holy god the planets are made of gold' good.

That being said, if you want to shoot shit and not spend a fortune, just bring a T1 tackling frigate. We can always use more of those in gangs/fleets, even with a newbie drive active.
No reason to bring bigger ships unless you want to.
Okay I'm on a trial account, I want to get the most out of this. How should I set up my character?
I'm gonna assume you want to do combat. The OP has some basic descriptions of the combat styles of each race. Just pick whichever sounds most interesting to you. For attributes, get your Perception and Intelligence really high. Charisma isn't very important unless you want leadership skills.
I started off going for an industry route, but it so far was not as fun as combat.
Combat route is good because
A: You gont get raped so hard by pirates, you have a chance to escape/hold your own.
B: Ratting is just as profitable as mining, but less monotonous
C: You can still mine, almost as effectively and some of the best mining ships are combat ships, eg Megathron is pretty sharp.
However sometimes, if you go pure industry route you can apparently just become richer than god and be the backbone of a large group of people who rely on you for materials, production and whatnot.
I dunno, a good analogy would be healers in WoW being industrialists. Fewer in number, arguably less fun to play, but crucial and sought after by everyone.

Sounds like leveling for Tibia. Which is something I endured for 8 years.

How should I create my character for industry?
Im not sure really. EVE is quite good that you dont have a specific role, you can change at any time your 'class'.
Take up the mining skills early, already a few weeks in im finding it would be a real pain to switch over to specialise, I mean even basic shit like mining drone use is a pain to go for atm, especially if im moving forward my learning skills.
Do a google search for EVEmon, it will track your skills out of game and alow you to plan ahead which ones to train. Its a nigh essential program that really, could just be implemented right into the core game and work great.
Been lurking here on and off for a good few years, but thought I'd register since you're joining us out in Goon Space.
I think y'all will like it out with us. Just be sure you're prepared for the pvp aspects -- I always worry when people who've done a lot of PvE eve play come out and join us, because there'll always be that one guy who doesn't listen and gets chain-podded into bankruptcy. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR CLONE UPGRADED, and probably a good idea to fit a cloak on all your ratting or pve ships.
If you haven't tried much pvp before, try taking a frigate along on one of our suicide ops, it's fun

Memory and Intelligence are the industrial attributes, and Gallente Intaki are supposedly a good industrial bloodline. Even though you're going that route, you should still get a high perception, because it's pretty much inevitable that you'll eventually do some fighting, either by choice or necessity.
1. All standings are set right, ours and everyone elses.
2. Get into public Goon channels
3. ????>????
4. Profit! and fun times!
Also Szechuanosaurus: (whoa) I know what you mean exactly, I was figuring if you were afk hauling, then your time away from the keyboard is worth 0 so you'll be making more out of your mods for nothing. Of course this doesn't work with low sec space. But for a high sec guy with some time to spare it could make the guy extra isk.. after 10 or so trips it'll add up I suppose.
So I joined this a few months back and then cancelled because none of my various groups of friends had it, and playing MMOs completely solo can get boring kind of quickly, especially when you're an industrialist type like me.
But then I joined the PA forums to make poast in Wii thread, and noticed there was an Eve thread too! And now that I've beat'd my Wii games, I'd like to start up with Eve again.
Suggestions on starting race and training for a miner/builder type? And directions toward Merch Industrial space? General tips? Like I said, I played around with it for a month or so and then stopped, so I'm not totally new but any suggestions would be super appreciated.

Goons following BoB policy for mega-pewpew? \m/  \m/
MerchI in SP? do you guys make BCs? (tier 2s even?) if so I'll be doing regular business with you
maybe a few wolf/jag orders too...
We have BPOs for Drakes, Hurricanes and Myrmidons. We also make a lot of Armaggeddons and ammo/fittings. There's probably quite a bit more we manufacture, but you'd have to talk to Rathstern Executus (CEO) about that since he does all the manufacturing. I'm unfamiliar with all the BPOs Merch Industrial possesses.

We have the full run of BC BPO's.
We have no battleship BPO's.
We have a number of Frigate and Cruiser BPO's.
We have no tech 2 BPO's.
I know of no plans to aquire and/or loan battleship BPO's, but I am not down on the production side of things[unless someone wants to fund via isk/cash an alt, which I would be happy to run up the production ladder in order to fill empty slots if any are]

cool. are you guys at liberty to say what system you're gonna do the manufacturing in in SP? I suppose I shall contact you guys ingame to find out the details. I hope your hurricane prices are optimistic.

Either 28Y or KZFV-4. Our office is in 28Y, but refining facilities are in KZFV. Again, Rath would be the one to ask for a definite answer.
So hey, I decided to fly out to the corp office at Slay to put in an application and I typed in "I posted in the PA Eve thread a few hour" and then it cut me off and submitted so when you see an application that looks like the applicant must have been murdered by a serial killer mid-sentence that would be me.
Yay.
Anyway, I figured best to go to Slay first and apply and hopefully I can get a crash course in MerchI before heading into Hosh? I'll just be moving a few things and mining and generally putzing around for awhile here.

The corp application mails seem to be borked, as they only let you type one line in the supporting message. They used to let you compose a decent length message but now it's pretty much RECRUITMELOLOMGNOSPACE!
If any of you MI guys have any issues, ie standings, problem with a swarm member, or anything of the like, I'm your goto guy in case you didnt know. When I'm on I'm in the PA channel, but you can evemail me if I'm not, and I can get you sorted out, or passed along to whoever can get you sorted out. Also, I told Goumindong, but get in the shared defense channel so you dont have to report hostiles in local.(ask him for the details) If you see someone in local you who dont know if they're friendly, ask in the channel, dont be shy, somebody should answer you rather promptly.

I wasn't aware we had a Harbinger BPO. If we do, we haven't produced many, if any at all. I've not seen anyone in the corp with one either.
And I know we don't have any battleship BPOs, but we do have multiple runs on 'Geddon BPCs which we produce quite often.
