McGibs seyz: DEAMONETTE PAINTING VID page 5 (nsfw)

edited September 2009 in Artist's Corner
Hey guys, I figure I'd make a long term thread to post some of the stuff that I do for work (as it becomes publicly available.)

As I may have said a while ago, I work full time as a character artist for a game studio called HitGrab, which makes Facebook based 'casual' games (I say 'casual' because some of these facebook players are some of most hardcore fans I've ever seen.)

HitGrab struck big when their first successful game, Mousehunt won a $250,000 Facebook sponsored development grant. Right now, Mousehunt has more then 30,000 players online (I'm not sure how many total players there are, but I think its a million or two). Up until a few months ago, I didn't even know these games existed, let alone were this ridiculously popular.
All these games are free to play, but generate money on a sort of micro-transaction/donation system.

Anyway... a friend of mine was the head illustrator for Mousehunt and hired me on as a freelancer in my last year of school. I did that for about 4 months, then graduated, then immediately got hired on full time as an in-house illustrator. For the past 3ish months we've been developing HitGrab's second Facebook game, called MythMonger.

It's basically a collectible card game set in a fantasy/faerie-tale world. And I draw alot of said cards. And also write alot of the quests.

It's currently in open beta, so if you want to check it out and waste some time while at work or school or whatever, go here: http://apps.facebook.com/mythmonger/

Now arts:
Ive done probably about 75-100 cards so far, a bunch of which arn't ingame yet. But here are some of my personal favorites. Play the game if you want to see the rest. :p (or go here )

It's a great gig, and I've got alot of creative freedom. I'll post more stuff as it gets released.

Man...super, super cool, Gibs. :D Really great little illustrations. I really love the "enchanted goblin" card, it made me laugh.

These are great. I like how even though the backgrounds are fairly simple, they imply a lot more detail.

    Amazing art.
    Terrible, confusing logo.

You should make a new kickass logo and persuade them to change it.

Nice to see I'm not the only one that logo fills with rage.

It just doesn't read properly at all.

I really like these! Something's bugging me about the 'forest hideout' one though. I know the chest is probably on a slope but I just looks like the perspective is way out.

Great work McGib's. I want to live on Ted's farm.

(Also, I'd like to chime in and say I'm not feeling the logo either...)

They're all great. Mollusk Mortar is probably my favorite. Something about a snail in goggles is just appealing.

    gibs these are all fantastic
what's your process? do you do these all digitally?
i can't understand how people ink like this digitally without using vectors, my inks with like the brush tool come out all blurry and really digital looking.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Yes the logo blows. Yes I complain about it to the other devs. Maybe they'll let me make a new one sometime in the future.

@ Beav: Theyre all photoshop. I lay down a rough sketch on a really dark (usually blueish) background. Then I paint overtop of the sketch to pull it out of the dark. The lineart is actually the original sketch poking through. I don't refine any of the lines afterwards.

I have some painting videos recorded, but none of them are public yet. When they are, I'll be sure to post 'em here.

These are awesome! I have a minor observation though; watch out for the text's leading! The name of the card is really close to the description of the card and when you have letters with descenders like the Y in Coney Scout it touches the text in the line below it.

It looks weird when they touch.

I just draw the pictures. Blame any weird typography type on the developers. Sadly, while they know how to code, I can't say the same about their design and basic grammar skills.

And now for something a bit more interesting (because facebook games are really kinda boring...)

Many of you may remember me posting about the sidescrolling XBLA game I'm making with one of my friends (he codes). Well now its a bit further along, so I'll show you more of that.

We recently won 3rd place in a local small-business entrepreneur contest, netting us an actual budget of $10,000 (and against, REAL entrepreneurs too! Like, people trying to find renewable energy and shit!), so this counts as a part time job now. Money greases the wheels of development.

    Here's a youtube video of a not-too-old build.
    GAMEPLAY VIDEO

And here's some spash art for the title/menu screen (the background moves)
    capsized-splash-small.jpg

    and loading screen.
    capsized-loading-small.jpg

and for kicks, here a crappy little animatic for the intro cutscene, via digital comic.
