I understand that most people would classify Al as a "joke band", but on the other hand, I'd like to see you name any other joke band that has a successful 30-year career, 3 Grammy Awards, 4 gold records, and 6 platinum.

It's sort of like saying Larry the Cable Guy is your favorite public speaker.

But the difference here is that Larry the Cable Guy is not a Public Speaker, he's a comedian.

Whereas Weird Al Yankvoic and Tenacious D are both musicians. That write and perform music.

Weird Al sorta writes and performs other people's music though.

He does make up his own lyrics however. I'll give him credit for that.

Weird Al may do mainly parodies, but he does do his own stuff too.

In fact, I'd argue his original work is some of his strongest stuff. Like "Don't Download This Song" and "Your Horoscope For The Day"

Half of all the music he writes is 100% original.

And for the parodies, he does create new arrangements himself. He actually kind of has to because most times he won't use the exact same number of verses or choruses as the original, so it's not like he can just take a karaoke version.

This new song sounds like a Jonathan Coulton song.

I'd say Skipper Dan is in the style that's about as close as you get to "Al Yankovic" style.

Yeah, but it'd be a bit redundant to say "This song sounds like a Weird Al song"

People were talking about how it sounded to them and it specifically reminded me of a Jonathan Coulton song, but I can't really remember which one.

Plus, The Geek said it's "very obviously" a Weezer-style parody, but the only Weezer-style I hear is the guitar, but nothing else about the song reminds me of Weezer at all

I don't really hear much Weezer in there

He was apparently pretty good friends with Al back in the day. Jackson gave him permission to parody any one of his songs except "Black or White", which he deemed "too important".

I love when he performs Albequerque.

I have no idea how a guy can take a ten minute long song, and find ways to drag it out without becoming boring.

    "You got any glazed donuts?"
    "NO! We're outta glazed donuts!"

"Well, you got any jelly donuts?"
    "NO! We're outta jelly donuts!"

"You got any Bavarian cream-filled donuts?"
"Nah, we're outta Bavarian cream-filled donuts"

    (2 minutes later)

"Do you have any lingonberry donuts?",
"NO! We're out of lingonberry donuts!"

"Do you have any Halle Berry donuts?"
"NO! We're out of Halle Berry donuts!"

I just think Al is too nice to even give the slightest impression of being mean to / profiting off of MJ after his death

I still think he's had a long and prolific enough career that there should be a tribute-style album where the groups he's parodied perform his version of their songs. That'd be freakin' awesome.

I heard this news while I was touristing around Florida. The morning DJ's were making light of the situation and being the standard radio-shock-jerkholes by claiming that they committed suicide out of embarrassment for their son.

Fuck. I hate obnoxious radio personalities so much! D:
