Archie Comics is once more messing with the formula, much like they have with shifting the art in Sabrina The Teenage Witch to a more mangaesque style. This time, artist Steven Butler will be trying his best to make the teens of Riverdale look more like you and me, starting off in a story in May 2007's Betty And Veronica Double Digest as well as it's cover. For a look at the cover as well as an explaination why, check out the link here.
Does anyone read Archie? I myself look to Spider-Man 's Mary Jane for all my embarrassing teenage pseudo-drama. If Archie has anything going for it it's the nostalgia factor, and this move will kill that once and for all.
And why does every Newsarama article I read have at least one typo?
P.S. If they want to modernize Archie, how about updating the cast so it includes more than a bunch of caucasians sporting a variety of hair colors and complexions?

Archie will soon be killed off and replaced by a chinese dude during Crisis of Infinite Prom Dates: Betty or Veronica?

After peering through the professor's latest invention, Archie is shocked to discover an alternate continent populated by people just like him, only black.

Colonialism ensues.
I missed the 'r' in peering when I first read this post. It was much funnier that way.
I stand corrected. There is, in fact, one black guy in Archie. He probably has black parents too, so that makes three.
And God knows we don't need any more characters of that race, or any other race for that matter, to accurately reflect modern high school social environments.
Actually, he has a girlfriend, and there's several black incidental characters as well as well as Asian and Hispanics and Native Americans and Jesus christ what is wrong with you riding this racism horse it's fucking ARCHIE

I went to high school with only one non-white person. But he was adopted, so his parents were still white. And since I'm the only real reason that the comic industry exists, I think that basing Archie off of my high school is acceptable.

Archie started in the '40s, so it's bound to focus on characters of a certain background and race and reflect the values of that time period. And yeah, I guess one would expect them to add a black guy, a black girlfriend for him (he's certainly not going to date Betty or Veronica), and a few other ancillary characters of a variety of races instead of changing the core story structure to allow those characters to play more significant roles. It's all pretty predictable when other forms of entertainment have paid the same lip service to the need and desire for racial diversity in entertainment, and though it's slightly offensive it's hardly anything to get riled about (least of all when you're considering an established franchise that could be damaged by any true changes to its formula).
I wouldn't have that much of a problem with it if Archie was still attempting to honor its original model complete with the original core set of characters and plotlines, and I didn't so long as that was the case. Now that they're seeking to update Archie and push it more so into the realm of realism, however, I do think it reflects a certain degree of ignorance when the publishers think all that would necessarily entail is changing the art. If Archie is meant to be such a versatile product that it can adapt to modern times, then its current creators ought to recognize that modern social circles aren't limited to quartets of white kids with '40s sensibilities masked by modern dress.

Heh, thanks Furu. I had a 'eh' sort of night at work and reading this on my break gave me a good and much needed laugh.
Betty and Veronica look like they are about to eat a small lunch and then go throw it up.
Man, you totally beat me to the punch on that one. I mean, in fairness, the old Betty and Veronica looked like 1940's pin-ups, which is also unrealistic, but seriously, what the shit? I mean, look at Betty's lips. They might as well say "Insert wang here." Oh well, at least their enormous, alien-like skulls and tiny boney frames will make it much, much easier when the writers finally decide to pen the Betty & Veronica/America's top model crossover.
Well, this is supposed to be aimed towards younger kids and portraying the high school environment - unfortunately, that's what girls in high school today really look like.

I did, back in my youth.
In my defense, I can only look back on the period in shame.
That said...why fuck with the art? It's classic.
Man, and I was just going to be witty and call him Archie Van Der Beek.
Fixed
Change sucks.
I'm sure theres some around.

Except for the core five characters, but that's like complaining a black person has never been Batman.

Damn gingers.

Listen, I read a lot of Archie when I was a wee lad of 7 or 8.
Do you get it?
Jughead is my Ted Kord.

If your girlfriend has a ten-inch waist
Okay, then we actually pretty much agree that this is a horrible awful idea.
Cool.

Because he's in everything, amirite?
Anally.
Might have already met him. Not like they've shown everything Logan's remembered yet.
