Enhanced port of Sonic CD in development for the Iphone
For those who don't know who that is, this is HUGE. Taxman is a good friend of mine and he knows Sonic's engine inside and out. He's been in talks with Sega about releasing an enhanced version of Sonic CD for the iphone and has provided a proof of concept:
This is NOT emulation. It's a true port, and an enhanced one at that. Fully remade engine that'll take advantage of the iphone. We're talking the first NEW classic Sonic game in a long time.
He's set up a page outlining the development: Hail Taxman
This dude seriously rules. I've spent many hours talking about the Sonic engine with him; he's where I'd say a good 90% of my engine knowledge came from. He helped me develop my Hedgehog Engine.
Tax is asking everyone email Sega to show that, yes, you want this.
i really liked sonic CD, so I will probably get this once I get an iphone. is this going to be a straight port or will there be extras? how enhanced do you think it will be? more/extra levels? multiplayer?
Well color me delighted. It's been ages since I played a classic sonic game, and that looks about as faithful a port as can be (save for the lack of an actual genesis controller).

This is using Taxman's Retro Sonic engine. Retro Sonic is probably the most advanced Sonic Engine ever, with Stealth's E03 engine being the only serious competition. It's completely flexible, and has been ported to several systems (including the dreamcast). His Retro Sonic demo released back in 07 showcased numerous enhancements, and I have absolutely no doubt that Tax has further improved upon it.
This isn't a straight port. It's more like a remake.
Just to clear this up, this is NOT a fanproject. Tax's Retro Sonic engine is a fanproject. He's been working on it since 05.
This Sonic CD port is NOT a fan project. He's in talks with Sega to get it published. He delivered the proof of concept already upon their request and they're going to either approve or deny the project this Wednesday. Hence why he's asking for people to email sega expressing their desire for Sonic CD.
Man, I've been wanting an enhanced port of Sonic CD for DS/PSP forever. As cool as this looks, I can't help but wish it was for something other than iPhone.
This reminds me TSR, how's your own personal Sonic engine doing?

Man, having one's fingers in the way of part of the screen makes me nervous. When it comes to platformers, I like being able to see as much as I can to avoid getting killed.
Regardless, that's the only criticism I could ever say about this. Good shit. :^:

Alright I added my support for him on sega's facebook page. Tell him good luck for me!
So by "talks" does he mean simply randomly pestering people at Sega, or is he actually meeting with executives of some sort?
Till then, it's a fan project.
Careful, you'll earn the ire of the underground sonic rom haxxoring scene. They'll come after you with their inside connections to sega and the yakuza.
Well... if they ever get out of their fursuits anyway.

Nooo, not again!
You summon their wrath and I'll hold you responsible.
I can't decide if this is a doomed fan project or a grassroots campaign. I'm not someone who cares for Sonic, but, uh, good luck guy.
The Taxman is one of a few people I'd trust with a remake, and this looks pretty freaking amazing. Added my support for the cause; hope SEGA signs off on things.

Here is Tax's demo from 2007
New levels wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities.

EDIT: OH wow, he's that far with them? Badass!

Sonic the Hedgehog is nothing more than a rom and an emulator running on the iphone. It's nothing at all like this.
Sorry. I realize this is pointless bitching.
US or JPN soundtrack?
Will the FMV be included?

Did you even watch the video? It opens with FMV running on the iphone.

I did watch the video. I saw FMV but I didn't see it playing on the iPhone screen.

猿も木から落ちる
I think the crazy high resolution of the iPhone makes this impossible to achieve.

He said he changed the screen ratio in his engine, so it's probably 1:1
This. PSP version, and I'd buy two.
Oh dang, that'd be awesome. Hell, release it through PSN. Don't even need a disc.
Yep, that's exactly what I had in mind.

Hopefully Sega is not just "meeting" with the programmer to bust his kneecaps or something.
In any case, this seems like a really cool idea, I'd probably buy it! The Sega games that are on the iPhone so far are...kind of iffy.
