Can't play Halo 3 when connected to Xbox live?

When i try to play a campaign on Halo 3 as local not even using XLive IF i am connected to my profile on xbox live it loads the game, says "Know your role" in the bottom right. Then it kicks me back to the welcome screen saying "The Game ended because a player left the game".
BUT i can play with my wifes profile which is only on the HDD and not linked to a Xbox live account...
