Gave Out My SSN - Heart Attack Y/N?

So I've been job hunting, and sent my resume via Dice to a consulting company looking for a mid-level position.

The posting said you could call too, so I called and talked to a woman about the position. After some back and forth, they called me back and did a a short interview, then asked for my SSN and birth date. I gave it to them. No actual job offer has been made yet.

So should I throw all the flags I can on my credit, etc., or not be worried?

They could be using your SSN to run a background check.

Wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on your credit, though.

    Uhh.

Usually the SSN is given on an application which is a legal contract between you and the employer, that has some rules about SSN usage.

You just gave it away for free.

    So.

    Maybe not a heart attack.

    But stupid.

How reputable was the place you gave the information to? Was it a company name you recognized?

You may want to search for whatever information you can on the company before you panic. If you can't find any information or only find shady information, then yeah get a credit report to see if anything's been done to you.

I know it was stupid, it could be a great scam - get people who are desperate to be employed.

Hadn't heard of the company before, but it is a real company, or at least they're going to great lengths to appear real; Websites, other job postings, people on LinkedIn.

you can always put a fraud alert on your credit reports. This'll require lenders to call you at a specific number before doing a loan on your SSN.
    https://www.experian.com/consumer/cac/InvalidateSession.do?code=SECURITYALERT

If you do it on experian they'll tell transunion and equifax.

I did then when I had my CC number stolen, even though it was probably overkill. It's not like it hurts you any.

Put put the fraud alert. It'll just make getting new credit require you to answer an extra half dozen questions over the phone. Probably won't be necessary but doesn't hirt either.

Took advice of Pheezer and others. Probably fine, but this would be the last thing I'd need.

Not likely to be opening any new lines of credit soon, I was just concerned it would throw off any legitimate background checks.
