<thinks> I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a difficulty option for the campaign. Difficulty levels only come into play with the skirmishes - and for the Hard/EX skirmishes, you want a pimped squad.
Or I do. But I am, famously, a coward.

I seem to have hit the difficulty spike of this game. Mission 7 is like, woah. Is it even worth battering down the ruin walls? One lancer shot did a pitiful amount of damage and I wasted 2 CP because I thought the Edelweiss would crack that bitch down in one shot. :x
Yes, you have to take down those stone pillars/walls because:
The Batomys will shoot its main gun in order to get them out of its way. After it does this (next turn, if I recall), it will expose the radiators on its top. Many folks have said if you just get a scout to climb on top of it you can toss in a grenade for a one-shot destruction on the rads, but I just nailed 'em with lancers from the ground.
And if you think this mission is tough so far? Juuuuuuust wait, baby. Protip: Use the ruins as cover!

I find that it's Awaken Potential that's most broken. Especially on a scout with double movement. Aika in particular because she has resist crossfire and runners high which let her pretty much ignore even tank interception fire.

It's been a while since I played that level, but you might be shooting at the wrong walls.
The walls that are directly in the Batomys's path should rotate into position with one shot from your tank or from a lancer rocket. After that, leave those walls alone (and pull back your troops) until the Batomys gets close enough to use its main cannon.

Wait wait wait wait
They rotate? I thought I had to blow them up to smithereens and clog up the tank tracks of the Batomys or something, or does it have to fire at them in order for the radiators to expose?

The walls you should be shooting will drop in a single shot. There are other walls that will take virtually infinite damage - do not shoot those walls.
I can't remember what it was, but there is a definite visual indication as to which walls you should be targeting.
edit: They don't rotate, exactly. They, mmm, tilt/crash downwards into the path of the tank. But again, with a single shot, not repeated damage to blow them up.
I tried blasting the first wall that the Batomys encounters on its path of destruction. That took far too many hits, and in the end it had a sliver of HP which was wiped out by the Batomys anyway.
I've restarted a few times anyway, I found whether my sniper can kill in one shot in round 1 to be crucial to progressing in this fight.
I think the first wall is already collapsed, so Batomys will blow it up to give you an idea of what you have to do to stop it.
If memory serves, the first wall you want to shoot is to the east of the first camp in the Batomys' path.
...So. Take the first one with a grain of salt, and take the second one as another member of the Academy.

I bet the first one is a trap.
According to http://valkyria2.jp/popup_movie2.html her name's Licorice Nelson. Edy's sister, and she's successfully become an idol, if I'm reading it right.

Wow. Clever way to insert a fan favorite in the form of a sister. Well, I guess it's better than having Edy cameo alongside Welkin, Alicia (adult and anime), and Lamar (and Selvaria though that's way out there).

Argh.
As long as she's a minor character, I'm okay. Though, judging by Edy's popularity, I doubt she will be. Git yer dancin' hoors outta mah shootin' mans games!

Fixed. Vyse was the only male character worth using in a sea of female badasses.
Licorice becomes the Songstress of the Battlefield? Also, it looks like she's friends with the main character in the video preview. I wonder if we'll have a Persona sort of relationship development system going on. Who knows? Maybe it requires that maxing out certain relationship unlocks the final Personal Skill.
Who are these people y'all are talking about? I just beat the game, and on every mission, I used basically the same people:
Numbered from "used every time" to "used if I'm going class heavy"
1. Alicia
2. Aika
3. Juno
4. Wavy
1. Rosie
2. Vyse
3. Lynn
1. Largo
2. Jann
3. Yoko
1. Karl
2. Dallas
1. Catherine
2. Marina
I'm sure most of the people y'all are talking about would have a *NEW* next to their name if I loaded up my save. I guess I just found characters I liked and stuck with them... didn't experiment at all.
I didn't really intend to make Ted a mainstay of my team but like every time I did use him he would fluke into some tactically incredible position that would singlehandedly turn the tide of whatever battle I was in.
In mission 7 I had sent him out to pick off a sniper or something in the distance I forget what exactly and forgot about him but later on when Selvaria showed up turned out he was directly behind her and her reinforcements letting me kill every single one of them with no difficulty.
Another time I sent him to rescue a fallen shocktrooper I got a little to aggressive with and when I was retreating I stumbled upon a watch tower that I climbed up and was able to headshot a whole bunch of the enemies. On the enemies turn they wasted nearly all their CP trying and failing to kill him.
It's amazing because that sort of blind luck seems like it should be totally in character for him.
Hold on a tick! If I deploy a story character (with the CP badge) does that mean I'd get an extra CP per turn than if I say, swapped Rosie for Vyse?
And do shocktroopers actually get useful at all? All of the missions so far (up to 7), their incredibly shitty movement limit does not make them appealing. I could travel 3x the distance with a scout, probably run circles around a shocktrooper enemy and then headshot him to death, point blank. Or I'd just snipe 'em.

In my experience shocktroopers become useful when you get flamethrowers strong enough to one shot enemies behind cover since then you'll be able to take them down in 1 CP rather then the minimum 2 it would normally take a scout. That and you'll be able to take down more then 1 crouched unit per turn with them since flamethrowers have unlimited ammo unlike grenades. Also flamethrowers have a huge cone shaped AoE so you can take down multiple crouched units at once.

Yes, bring Alicia, Rosie, and Largo into every mission, even if you don't move them. All three add to the CP you have.
I started using shocktroopers more after they got to level 10 and got a new weapon that really helped when the CPU got smarter and started crouching behind sandbags.

1. Yes. Deploying a CP Character adds an extra CP Point. Really, the only CP character that doesn't have much use even with all Potentials unlocked is Largo (no Ultimate Tank Damage).
2. They get useful if you level them up to 11; their Flamethrowers are quite valuable as crowd clearers (not to mention the Flamethrowers ignore Sandbag damage reduction bonus), and most of the Shocktroopers have some form of extra damage or extra defense Potentials that make them more durable than Scouts. Scouts are still borderline broken when they get to 11, thanks to their mortar-like RPG attachment, but nonetheless, they can still die fast in a crossfire (compared to ShockTs).
Damn, flamethrowers? I thought they were just in for VC2, I did look at the weapon upgrade trees and wondered how the hell they splintered off into 3 lines (actually I thought it was only 4 measly upgrades for every weapon until I saw an arrow pointing down )
Flamethrowers are a separate upgrade line, and require some investment. However, they are well worth it; esp. when more and more enemies use Sandbags or grass for cover (Flamethrowers also ignore the Grass (Hiding) Defense bonus. IIRC, they may even cause enemy soldiers to stand up; not quite sure).

I...uh...what, dude?
Did you play a different version of VC than I did? Because there were a lot of females with...uh...certain qualities...in my game
Oh wait, you probably played Vyse Simulator Chronicles: Jesus Christ, It's Vyse! Awesome!
For reference, some games it beat:
GTA: SA
RE 4
SSBM
TF2
CoD 4
UC2 (I know I shouldn't be so happy about this, but...suck it Uncharted 2! :P)
WoW
Super Mario Galaxy (but just barely)
Also for reference, some games that didn't make it:
FFX (In favor of FFIX, a...wrong choice)
P3 (In favor of P4, a...right choice)
Gears of War
Any Halo (Put your own snark here)
GTA IV
Twilight Princess (?)
Any other this-gen RPG besides Lost Odyssey...which really shouldn't have been there if FFX wasn't
Any Ratchet and Clank
Rock Band (In favor of Rock Band 2...which, even though it had a stronger playlist, admittedly, and some good cosmetic changes/additions of minor upgrades, wasn't anywhere near the revolutionary title RB was)
Anyways, I'm happy that we made it this far, except for losing out to fucking Half-Life 2, imo one of the most overrated pieces of shit of all time
Normally top XX games lists suck horribly... but I'm having a really hard time being violently opposed to that list. I actually find myself agreeing. o_O
