Engineers wouldn't be so bad if they had grenades, or if they could revive someone who is downed. Because their pistols do more damage than the rifles scouts use.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Impregnable APC (June) is an annoying mission. The named NPC ahead of the command one HITS LIKE A TRUCK. It's a friggin' Flamethrower turret with a gatling gun. I WANT IT.
Used Chloe because everyone kept saying she gets really good and etc. Finished her classmate mission, and came to one conclusion.
Chloe is terrible, and I have trouble believing anyone ranks her as the "best sniper", let alone even a "decent anything"
She has the highest accuracy, but that's nowhere near worth Moody.
Bitch is a bipolar artfag, though she IS awesome despite Moody. Creative Urge never kicks in at the best possible time for me though. It's an extra move.

Now working on the final April mission and dayum is the big baddie an asshole.
So I'm farting around in the Caverns area, trying to clear out all the enemies and get rid of the turret before capping the base. Little did I know that Bauldren would go for that area first. He shows up and wallops my lancer and trooper with his hammer. So, I had the silly notion that since he seems like a tech I could just have my scout rush in and sweep up my downed guys. Turns out, he likes to wield a LMG when he's not smacking people with his hammer. That was a disaster.
Only unlocked one classmate mission so far and it was Erik's. That mission was a total breeze. Now I'm wondering if I should take some time to unlock more before proceeding on with the Story.
Also, I've noticed that grenades and lancers will get rid of tree trunks (if that was covered in one of the early tutorials, I totally ignored it). Do they get rid of any other obstructions?

They can. It's a third-tier specialization (Engineer -> Engineer Veteran -> Medic). You can revive a squad member whose health has dropped to zero - or so the triangle-info blurb says. I just got Cosette up to Engi Vet and the description opened up.

In another case of "Annoying characters the game wants you to use", Lotte is actually exceptionally good.
Her last personal potential allows her to move twice, and her list of unlockable class potentials is pretty incredibly good.
Scout: Full HP Recover
Scout Veteran: Third Eye
Sniper: Critical Attack
Scout Elite: Max Evasion
Heavy Scout: Anti-Interception
Sniper Elite: Max Accuracy
AT Sniper: Ammo Refill
She can fill basically any job on the Scout tree and have excellent potentials for it

Wow, good thing I've actually been using a couple Medics (Goll g1 makes using them feel like far less of a hassle)
I should go farm up the certificates I need to promote some of them
...I use Lotte a lot. Now that Marina's snipered up, Lotte's my go-to scout after Avan. Ain't a lot to choose from for scouts - beyond Avan and Lotte, all we got is Chloe (boo) and Melissa (not bad!). Oh, and Timid McGirly, whose name I forget.

Nichol is actually pretty solid, he gets a good set of potentials and so far he seems to be the only character aside from Avan that gets Eagle Eye(increases zoom distance on sniper rifle).
Helmut is pretty good too. And I like him a lot more character-wise after his story scenes and classmate mission.

Real actual spoilers ahead, sort of
In game character Unlock requirements that I am aware of,
Isara - Link VC1 Save Data
Emilia - Link Phantasy Star Portable Save Data
Sigrid - Complete Reiner's classmate mission
Nahum - Have 100,000 DCT
Jugin - Complete the game
Brixham - Complete the game
Heinz Gilden - Get 5 Medals
Juliana Everhart - Get 20 Medals
Leon Hardins - Get all Medals
Inghild - Clear 10 Classmate Missions
Aisha - Clear 20 Classmate Missions
Oscar - Clear mission 120, not 100% sure what that means, possibly clear 120 missions since I don't think they're numbered.
Karl - Have 10 units withdraw or become injured
Elenor Varrot - Get Scout level 50
Rosie - Get Shocktrooper level 50
Largo - Get Lancer level 50
Emil - Get Engineer level 50
Zaka - Get Armor Tech level 50
Alicia - 10 Medals
Welkin - Learn all Orders, and then finish the Order Master paid mission that becomes available
Many of these characters also require you to have finished the game. Generally, VC1 characters unlockable in-game require you to have already finished the game, the others can be unlocked prior to finishing I believe.
There is a pretty huge list of other characters that are unlockable via codes, and some that were given out in Japan as preorder bonuses that will also be codes, off the top of my head,

Marina
Jann
Homer
Susie
Lynn
Maximillian
Selvaria
Faldio
Julius (Manga character)
Mintz (Manga character)
Alicia (Anime version)
Wald Lamarr (Anime character)
Ali-chan, and two units referred to as "Waking Up Cosette" and "Naked Zeri"
I think that is ever non-compulsory character, and some that I haven't personally seen in-game may have their names spelled differently because of translation fuckery.
Now that I've spent some time replaying missions to pick up more credits and open up backstories, I've made some revelations:
1) Mortarers are hilariously fun to use. I have Renier as one, and paired up with Cosette for ammo refreshes, shelling the enemy for one-hit kills from afar has not gotten old.
2) Engineers really aren't as bad as I was expecting them to be! I've pretty much avoided using them up through April, but now that I've experimented with them a bit, they hit stronger than I was initially led to believe. Now that Cosette is an Engineer Vet, having some long-range healing paired with decent mobility and attacking is actually kind of nice.
3) I got Chloe and Marina both to Sniper in the same mission, and holy crap, they are awesome. I'm thinking of having them split the two branches of Sniper and then just being the Hands of God: Deploy them at new camps, wreck everyone visible from miles away, then disappear back into the reserves.
The only major qualm I have is that enemy AI is so uneven, but now in April the game is opening up, I'm starting to figure out more about this damnedly random credits system, and I'm having a complete blast with it all.
EDIT: For anyone who's done Joachim's mission,
How did you end up finishing out the third map and taking the base? I actually almost had a game over because between that massive gatling turret, the medium tank and the endlessly spawning enemy reinforcement troopers and snipers, even my armored techs would get mowed down almost instantly. I ended up taking Chloe to snipe the guys sitting inside the camp, then had to use the Defense Boost order on my last surviving tech and just quarterback blitz my way past the turret, tank and remaining troopers to take the camp. It felt cheap, in a way, but I couldn't figure out any way to take out the turret.
So, I went back and re-read the OP, and was stunned when I saw this:
See that? "Paper Model".
PAPERCRAFT! (imagine a 30-year-old white guy's approximation of a squee)
Ahem.
What I meant, of course, is that these models are available, along with a movie of one of the developers playing with the main tank. You can find them here. So if you want to [strike]waste paper[/strike] painstakingly craft your own incredibly-fragile model, do it!

Hahaha, I was playing this on the train this morning. Last night I got Marina some Sppt tickets, but she had no certificates to upgrade to sniper. I remember Chance complaining about this, and just resigned myself to probably not getting Marina to sniper for a while.
I did the March mission where you use the tunnels, put Marina down there, and basically just played as normal, not overusing/underusing her, just, well, using her alongside Zeri and Anisette. Mission won... Marina gets three certificates.
Marina, here is your rifle. Good girl.

I'm using Melissa as my Sniper right now.
She's not even as good a Sniper as Nichol, but it just feels right to have the creepy stalker hiding in the grass and watching the enemy through a rifle scope.

I prefer to have Melissa next to Zeri as a scout. Considering her Zeri Lover potential, she barely ever misses when she's near him. And if she's a sniper, she's never near him.
Use 5 CP on them for Cutscene 1
Use another 10 CP for Cutscene 2

Use the character often, I've heard unsubstantiated rumors that total CP spent on them increases the chance for it to fire for the first time.
After that, just place them in circumstanced that would activate the potential normally.
If it's Full HP Recover or Ammo Refill or something, just attack every CP, even if you shoot air.
For stuff like Super Evasion and stuff that procs at random, just wander around with them.
For Dud Mine, step on a lot of mines. Yes, this is the second worst potential to unlock.
For Phoenix, die repeatedly. I suggest keeping a Medic onhand. Have fun unlocking this one.
For classmate missions, every 5 CP spent on that character will initiate a new scene, and the fourth scene will open a classmate mission.
Also, I'm worried. Someone used a code to unlock every character, and a bunch were missing so nobody knows if they're still in. One of them being Selvaria

So I just noticed something that had initially eluded me on the Sega blog,
Our support for Valkria Chronicles II is far from over, and we’ll be back soon with even more news on the upcoming DLC for the game, and some special codes to unlock new content – some exclusive to the west!

I'd say it's very nearly guaranteed that their TGS is a new VC game of some sort, whether it be VC3 or a side game of some manner.
The reveal for new codes and such ought to just come straight from the Sega America Blog
Also on the note of the DLC, apparently new maps ran for 100 yen, so hopefully they will keep a similar price scale and charge .99 per map.
I was having trouble with the March story mission, but then I was like 'oh wait, Alexis is a fencer' and then proceeded to one shot all the annoying things. Fencers seem to be able to one shot every non-story boss infantry unit, up to and including other fencers. The only downside is they lose the useful repair/disarm ability, but at least they don't destroy sandbags with their swings.
On a completely unrelated note, I kinda miss Jane. Especially since they gave sadist to a friggin engineer of all things. Ruined my day, that did.

Huh, totally didn't realize that when I got the certificates for Marina to become a sniper, I also got them for Avan to become a Scout Veteran, so he's upgraded now. And Zeri is one away from gunner, Alexis one away from fencer. Might upgrade those 2 before tackling the March escort story mission.

Before you upgrade to Gunner, keep in mind that they have a very wide "sweeping" motion for their attack. They attack sort of like a Bunker.
They can still kill people pretty well up close because their machine gun does really high damage, but they can be a bit imprecise and more difficult to use than a Trooper Veteran.
Personally, I still like them, but they're way better at interception fire than actually shooting things actively.
welp my urge to play underpowered stuffs got me to get this game. now to make many posts how i hate my life and how my engineer team keeps dying

If it makes you feel any better, Engineers are better than Scouts early on, and then later on when you're dying all the time your Medics can at least revive people.
