Man, that march mission.
I finished it first time, C rank. But fuck those V2's. I ended up having Rene give them some rockets to the face. 4 per V2? That's more than a fucking tank! by luck I had Rene find the tank straight away in the second area providing power to the V2's shields, so they weren't as tough as they could have been.
Once the APC was in zone 5, straight rush to the end point. And what do you know? I go past it. So the APC takes a turn of hammering from Dirk before I can move it, wit nearly 1/3 HP, back to the end point.

That mission is where the game pretty much tells you that the difficulty in VC2 is entirely uber units.
snipers when shields are down, assaults with a good angle (poor return fire, good head shot angle) or everyone's favorite running of the armored techs are the solution to V2s that early in the game. But any named plot unit like Dirk? Oh GOD do they cheat.
What I did notice is the balance is completely different from VC1. In VC1 bullets kill you, in VC2 random gunfire is harmless, certain units are just absolutely murderous. Oh, and tanks are made of paper, while lances aren't NEARLY as crap as they are in the beginning of VC1. Screw you and your amazingly terrible aim, Largo.

Dirk moved from one side of area 5 right to the back end of the map. Further than an elite scout could have. Fuck you, Dirk.

Dirk isn't anything but Dirk.
Special Units are special units. They have that funky boss logo for a reason!
finished february and in the start of march. avan's now part of the anthem corps, I have lvl 11 engineers, and I'm gonna try out sofia's quest.
Engineer hasn't been horrible, I'm using the tank where I'm lacking and the time I had a gatlin equipped I had to use a lancer for a bit. But other than that, engineer is fine. It's just not as good as other choices I'm sure

I know he's not a 'class'. But he's a huge armoured character. Even being an artificial Valkyria, seeing him move further than an elite scout is really wrong.

Most of them totally cheat.
Move father than a scout, use armor tech shields/hammers, and have a rifle ranged lmg? Yes, yes we do! Seriously, Dirk is the least offensive of the bosses, beyond Tank Lady, who just stands there being useless in her first mission.
The boss units are basically the cheap method of making the game hard on certain missions. It's like fighting around Silveria in VC1.
As for tanks: Seriously, is there any reason to NOT just use the Light Tank B or Utility APC? 1CP tanks? Yes please!

What's the best turret for the tank? Right now, I'm using a captured turret (no idea how I got it, I think it's captured, since the name starts with "Cptd") that combines a level 2 anti tank gun with a level 1 gatling gun that's, for some reason, better than my normal level 2 gatling turret.

I'm a fan of the flamethrower gatling turret for bunker-heavy missions and the Medium Tank's AP round turret for tank heavy missions.

That's the turret from Defensive Exam's Tank Ace, it's way better than anything you'll get for a while. You can also get a version with a stronger gatling gun in April, though it's comically huge and looks stupid on the Light Tank B.
Aces drop some really absurd equipment on subsequent kills. Like the almighty Hildr g1 from Jinn in Being Cruel to be Kind. If not for the fact that it's way rarer than the other drop, I'd suggest farming that mission until you have enough to outfit all of your Troopers. It's like the Ruhm of VC2.
So, after reading the thread (and picking up a copy); I've decided to grind all available missions to maximize my troops for the eventual rapefest in March.
Not doing too bad thus far; level 12 on all troops; several character missions completed, and investing in specializing all my troops.
Of the Original 7s:
Marina is back to the Sniper role since I can't find anyone more competent...
Lynn is Shocktrooper Veteran and an emergency backup (though I'm considering transitioning her over to Gunner)...
Isara is currently still a default Armored Tech; though I'm considering specializing her; just don't know what.
And Jann is also a reserve unit; Lancer Vet.
As for my new team; Neo7:
Alexis as a Fencer is all but destined, Avan is a Scout Veteran (if nothing else, he holds down a fort pretty damn well despite the lackluster Scout class), and Cossette refuses to earn the required credits to specialize. But she still functions pretty well otherwise.
Zeri is... I don't know. Gunner or Trooper Veteran? Which is better? I have Franca as a Gunner and Marion as Shocktrooper Veteran, and my experience with both put both classes as pretty good choices.
Are there any other characters that might prove more beneficial than they are at start? And before anyone recommends Chloe, she sucks. Every other turn seems to have her get moody on me. She's about the only teammember who's negative happens more often than even Helmut's Darcsen Hater.
Oh, and it's good seeing you all again.

So, after reading the thread (and picking up a copy); I've decided to grind all available missions to maximize my troops for the eventual rapefest in March.
Completely not needed.
Slight mission spoilers for how I did the March mission.
In the first area, only plonk down enough guys to take the base to the left (I used Avan and Cosette in case of any APC damage). Ignore Dirk. Take the base, move the APC to the next area.
In the next area, move the APC out of sight of the V2. Spawn a lancer, straight ahead there's a ladder. Go up, kill the tank. This drops the shields on the 2 V2's in the area. Kill them however you want - 4 lance shots will do it - that's how I did it, apparently those melee guys rip them apart. There's only 2, so don't worry. Dirk won't follow you, but he will go to the last area on turn 5.
Move through the second area taking out the 2 V2's, and retaking the flag if they take it back in area 1. Sometimes they will retake it and spawn some reinforcements, but that's just a lancer and a shocktrooper, so it's no problem. When you reach the end flag, end your turn.
next turn, select your APC, go to the next area, and just make a break for the end point. There's only sandbags in the way, and the V2's that shoot you while moving past shouldn't damage the APC enough. You have a clear run to the end point, and it's a little bit of a gauntlet, but as long as you don't stop moving, and end the action as soon as you run out of AP, the V2's won't hit the APC.
So, is there a level in march to grind to get certs before that mission?
Also, what exactly does leveling up do anyway?
I like Defensive Examination because it can reasonably easily be cleared with only one unit+tank, and since the Tank can't get credits the one unit is pretty much guaranteed to get certifications
Hey, something just occurred to me... is there a New Game + with all your units, gear, levels and potentials unlocked?
Yeah, one other change to New Game+ is that story missions become available to replay as much as you want.
I was going to say, other than story missions, you could re-do/watch most of the stuff anyway

Got through the April mission with some help from another player. Got a C rank, but that didn't matter since...
I offed Bauldren's cheap ass. So satisfying.
Unlocked a lot more classmate missions, and Joachim's definitely takes the award for most difficult so far. However, Marion's offers most amusing moment...
Marion: "Just stroking the action of the gun is making my heart race!"
Avan: "Uhh..."
The May story mission is pretty much a breeze, in comparison to the March and April ones. Now onto June and I still don't have any snipers, because the game just simply doesn't want me to have one.

At this rate I'm suddenly going to find out that Sigrid is a really good and interesting character too.

So, April story mission,
I was really worried when I saw that Baldren apparently has like 700 AP and can one shot anybody. Then on the second turn my tank rounds a corner and is staring straight at him. Anti-armor shot to the face, Bloodthirsty, anti-armor shot to the face and he goes down.
I got so lucky.
EDIT: Nice, apparently you also get a medal for defeating Baldren. Now I'm wondering if I missed a medal for not defeating Dirk in March.
Yeah, I kinda wish there was more of a guarantee that you will get a particular credit for a mission. Personally, though, don't want to grind, so I am just kinda taking it as I go along.
I think its a case of "ur doin it wrong" but I really don't like gunner. Think im switching to trooper vet.
Gunners do get a gun that will fire 10 more bullets, and they can fire through Armored Tech/Fencer armor. That said, they are not guys you really want on the front line if you want something dead on the first shot.
They are, however, perfect base defenders and great firing buddies. Place one behind some sandbags, and they will chew through any infantry that dares to pass.
My only complaint about the game is that it seems a bit easy, at least where I am at, aside from the March and April missions. It is all great fun, though, so it is not such a big deal.

Gunners at point blank will also waste anything in grass (pretty much half the 50-60 round clip goes into their face, cover or no)
They're bad at sniping things since they'll only get one headshot. But amazing at intercept fire and assist fire due to how the game decides NOW they can fire all those rounds directly at a target. I really like them for my "I just took a point and need a beachhead" units.
Up to July right now, and can seriously not stop playing. Light tank + Cptd AA Gtlg A1 turret (random ace drop I found in may, I think? But yeah, 1200 armor damage) is ridiculously good, basically one shotting all tanks and turrets. Use that to clear big obstacles out in a turn, then sweep in with scouts and troopers and engineers for clean up
Also once you start changing classes, don't forget to equip potentials! Forgot to do that till late in June, when my main dudes had a couple nice ones to choose from since I've been switching a lot

Heh, mission in April where the objective is to kill the fencer elite. He's guarded by V2's. Beat in one turn. Zeri on one side, Anisette on the other, gave him a bullet enema.
