i woke up this morning to find that someone had broken into our house and stole my Wii, several games, a spare controller setup, and my roommate's Powerbook.
GODFUCKINGDAMNIT
i've called the police who should be arriving shortly. thankfully i also bought (most) of my things with my AMEX card, so they're "protected". i've already called AMEX to report it.
Do you have the serial numbers for the expensive stuff? If so, give those to the police. If not, well this doesn't really help you now, but try to keep a list of those.
i just spoke with my roommate, who cleared up a lot more of the story.
around 1pm she and two friends went out clubbing. i stayed home, played some games for a bit, then went to bed around 2am.
my roommate had gotten extremely drunk while she was out and she and her friends came back with some other people around 3am. amazingly enough they took pictures of the assholes.
at some point afterwards, my roommate started throwing up, and her friends took her upstairs to the bathroom to take care of her. i don't know what the fuck the other guys were doing at this point but they probably took our shit and drove off. afterwards my roommate and her friends all fell asleep. it also looks like they left the front door open.
so either the guys that came home with them ran off with our shit, OR some random jackass off the street came in after the fact and took our stuff. fucking goddamned hell.
i spoke with a police detective and forwarded him the pictures. there's probably little chance we'll recover our things.
i'm so fucking pissed right now. i know it's just some electronics, but my roommate tends to do this kind of careless shit. FUCK.

Maybe he was careless.
But it's not his fault that some immoral punk went into your home and stole your possessions. It's their fault.
Man, that blows. My roommates and I got broken into on Canadian Thanksgiving. We were out for maybe 3-4 hours, came back and hung out with friends drinking and watching stand-up comedy... Then my roommate went back to his room and told me he "needed to show me something". He asked me where my laptop was... and yeah, they were all gone. Oddly enough, they forgot to take my tiny PS2, not that I'm complaining.
So apparently, thieves look for houses to check on the holidays, seeing as how this is a college town and most people go back to their folks. Only we're not Canadian, so nobody had Canadian Thanksgiving plans. So the 3 freaking hours we were out... argh.
I'd say check your insurance, look to replace your stuff, and beat your roommate bloody. I managed to actually get a little money back and a nice computer to boot, but I'm also pretty young, and still covered by my parent's insurance. The good part is that if you bought your computer even a year ago, there's something a thousand dollars less that is much much better out right now. As for the Wii... man. That blows.
But yeah, like you said. It's just consumer electronics, at least it was not worse.
I know how you feel, at my friends house everything has been stolen lately. Xbox, digital cameras, my ipod (this is while he was in the house and I was at the mall) and more. We have a general idea of who it could be and why, but we can't just prove it.

x Did you lock everything last night?

Anything helps for the coppers.
And good luck, hopefully they'll catch the bastards and otherwise, hopefully you'll get your money back.

Well, if all goes well, at least *you* will get money from the insurance, since its not your fault, right?
Good luck to you and your roommate.

hah, yeah. in the end it's only electronics.
i'm still pissed tho. my roommate is still living as if she was in a dorm room or something.

Your stuff is probably safer with your door open in Harlem than on your average college campus.

Not that there is anything that can be done about it ...
