What are some good ways to relieve the itchiness of mosquito bites?

I think this is wasteful but if you put a bandaid over a bite it will protect it from irritation while not irritating the bite itself. Take the bandaid off the next day and the bite will have shrunk down to a tiny red dot and it won't itch at all anymore.

I tried that (hydrocortizone cream), didn't seem to help much. OTOH, it's a tube of medicine that's probably been around awhile...

Haven't tried the bandaid thing. I might have to, this shit is driving me insane.

When I get bitten my a mosquito I swell up badly and the itch lasts for weeks. Personally what works for me when the bite is still new is this stuff called Afterbite. It's a stick of some anti-itch liquid for temporary relief.

honestly the best and cheapest method is to literally ignore it

    don't touch it

    don't scratch it

don't go "OH WHOOPS ACCIDENTALLY RUBBED MY LEG ON THE TABLE LEG

it's a little itchy but FORCE yourself to ignore it for like 2 minutes and it'll stop itching

AfterBite works pretty good. I used it all the time when I was in the Scouts since mosquito bites were inevitable whenever the repellent couldn't be reapplied soon enough.

wrap a paper towel around an ice cube and ice the area, its a good temporary relief.

if you do end up giving in to the itch and you have to scratch, use two fingers and scratch around it at a slow pace, instead of scratching the area directly and rapidly.

these two methods get me through the day without causing more damage to the swelling.

Put deoderant on it, it'll dry out the bite and reduce the itching.

Though, I usually just do the same thing Bel does.

Maybe my tube was defective, but I found that the Bendadryl stuff was much harder to apply than Afterbite on softer body parts.

It appears that running hot water over a bite will significantly ameliorate the maddening itch. I love wiki.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll probably have to try some of the other products mentioned here.

I work at a summer camp and spend about 18 hours a day in the prairie and woods, so I have a little experience with mosquitoes. The best advice as Raneados said: Don't touch it! If you don't touch it at all they'll go away really fast... like in 10-15 minutes. Yes, it is very hard not to scratch but they really do go away quickly.

If you absolutely HAVE to touch it, scratch around it and not directly on the bite, give it at least 1 inch on all sides where you scratch. Or perhaps you can try slapping it.

But whatever you do, do not scratch it until it bleeds. You'll look like you have chicken pox and they will last forever that way. If you don't scratch it and the bite stays for a long time and gets huge, then that means you have an allergic reaction to it and may want to see a doctor about medicines. Maybe they have epipens for mosquito bites.

    This.

This summer I've worked several weeks in a wetland where the mosquitos were literally attacking the truck before we got out and once we were outside no matter how much bug spray we applied they were all over us. I don't know how many time I got bitten, but they got me all over my arms, on my shoulders, and even through my blue jeans. Anyway, when I could refrain from scratching them, I would sleep peacefully and wake up non-itchy in the morning.

I have noticed that if you do not squash the mosquito as it is drawing blood, the bite does not itch. I always just shoo them off of me and I never have a problem with itchy mosquito bites.

When I was in china a few years ago, everyone I was with was complaining about the mosquito's and scratching their mosquito bites. I however did not have this problem, either from the mosquitos not biting me or because I don't kill them when they are on me.

I would venture to guess that the itchyness comes from the smashed bugs mouth still stuck in your body, and your immune system is trying to get it the hell out by making it itchy. These are just my observations and something you can black box for yourself. It works for me!

This is true as you say. But it's because the little bugger actually sucks some of its poison back up if you let it finish.

Also, I used toothpaste when I was a kid on my bites. It basically dries them up but also force you to not scratch. If it's strong mint it also has a soothing effect.

Rubbing some plain old Vinegar on the bite will dull the itching but it really only works if you get it rather soon after being bitten. Like within a couple minutes.

Not itching is the ideal, but sometimes you just gotta put your hand in your pocket, and then what? The hot water trick is what I needed. It works quite well, and it's practically free. Second, mosquitoes deserve nothing but death, and the only good skeeter is a dead skeeter. Like fuckin' hell if I'm not going to smash them deader than disco, I don't care if it gives me cancerAIDS. The little commie bastards must die.
