Some of the sets still have obviously placeholder stats, so the enhancement set might not be finalized yet. Out of curiosity, are the stats the same as the hunter pieces?
Shaman has been my least played class. I've never gotten into them deep enough to experience the Resto side. How does it work compared to other healing classes?
I've healed as all the others, and they've all got their quirks... But Chain Heal is unique. Do you just target the tank and let it rip? When do you use the single-target heals, or Riptide? Do you alternate between your party members with Chain Heal, just based on whoever is lowest?
What the classy Blastoise said.
Earth Shield is obviously always on the tank. If people are bunched up or only melee get damage I just Riptide the one with the most damage and follow up with Chain Heal. If people aren't close I Riptide someone and LHW (or sometimes, if I know I have the time HW) them individually. Healing Stream Totem takes care of random low AoE damage.
Chain Heal is really great for situations like Loken, where you just stick everyone close, drop Nature Resistance and spam Chain Heal inbetween Lightning Novas. Or when I got a VH heroic group with 3 DKs and a Paladin tank, so I could just spam Chain Heal on anyone, because they were always close together.
But normally Riptide and then LHW are what I use most in 5mans.
"Time" should rarely be a factor. With my modest amount of Haste, I have 1.7-1.5s Healing Waves with Tidal Waves up, meaning it's almost always more effective for me to throw a Healing Wave at the tank. Though unless you have DPS that, for some reason, needs an 18,000 heal, yeah LHW is fine.
Some of the sets still have obviously placeholder stats, so the enhancement set might not be finalized yet. Out of curiosity, are the stats the same as the hunter pieces?
Nope, and I think the shaman set is one of the ones that is done, as it has a proc and I doubt that will be shaman specific, Hope they put some damn expertise on other mail gear for once then.
Arms is, surprise, out of control in PvP yet again. I have so many games to play right now, I'd probably cancel my sub if Pilgrim's Bounty wasn't next week. Arena is fun with the right comp, but our janky one can only go so far since priests pretty much require specific classes to get the peels they need.
Riptide like it is my job. Healing Waves in between Riptides. Lesser Healing Wave if it looks like someone won't last until Riptide cools down. Chain Heal when I can time it to hit as/during AoE damage on groups.
Granted gear will probably alter your play style, but I have always healed this way... even when I was just starting out.
Also, I consciously avoid casting Chain Heal directly onto someone with Riptide because I would rather have that HoT keep rolling on them and count on my critical heals to help heal those with the greatest health deficit. Which again is probably a luxury of gear at my current setup, but I always shied away from it because I am weird.
Except that casting a chain heal on someone with riptide gives you a 25% boost to the chain heal, so yes, you are weird, and yes, you should be casting CH on riptide'd targets. In fact, unless you're chain-CH, you should avoid casting it on a non-riptide target.
What I like to do is keep the riptides rolling, and when I see the last 3 ticks come up, toss a CH on that target, so that it hits right before the last tick to maximize the heals. Personally, I glyphed for Riptide, to give me the extra flexibility to have more Riptides rolling on the raid, so I can better direct my "CH Bombs" as I like to call them.
And also, when you look at specific talents, like Tidal Waves and Healing Way, I think it becomes much more efficient to cast HW over LHW. With Tidal Waves up, the difference in cast time is marginal between the two, and in long fights, the higher mana efficiency of HW versus LHW will make a difference, especially when you're healing high health targets.
Generally, the only time I won't HW is when it would overheal a lower health target, like caster DPS, or if Riptide is on cooldown, and the target is close to death...and even in that circumstance, I sometimes blow a nature's swiftness/chain heal macro.
Hah, I keep forgetting the CH bonus on Riptide. Then again, I've healed all of 5-6 heroics so far. :P
Unless it's an OHSHIT moment (in which case I pop Nature's Swiftness and/or Tidal Force and do an instant HW), I always have Riptide on someone for the delicious Tidal Waves.
With the tank I normally do heroics with healing is usually reduced to Earth Shield on him and the occasional Riptide. Then I collect badges.

Shammy healing in three easy steps:
1) Earth Shield the tank
2) Drop Healing Stream Totem
3) Go AFK

how much hit do I need if I'm justing using elemental in heroics and to quest? is it still 446?
I don't know why it wouldn't be but I vaguely remember reading someone saying that heroics required less.
You need 6% hit to hit a mob at level 82. If you don't have any bonuses to hit from talents or racials or what have you, that means 158 hit.

oh. wow.
okay!
only reason that's bad is I thought my dps was meh when I ran elemental before because of low hit. I'll just have to pretend it was low anyway even though I'm not sure. aaaanyway, thank you have made my job so much easier whether I stay enhance or go elemental.
so 446 is for raiding? a worthwhile goal but not something to give anything up for unless I'm in that situation and not healing. exxxxcelent.
I'm finding it hard to play my goat-shaman. I want to faction/race change her to a Goblin... until then I can't see myself enjoying it, no matter how badly I want to. I've never liked her.
I suppose I can toss my heirloom cloth on and go Resto... but in mid-60's, might not be the most efficient way to level. I really need to invest in more dual-spec, but I haven't been that good at raising gold lately. Still only one epic flyer among 10 characters =/
Does Healing Stream really heal for a suitable amount? What does it tic for?

I deleted my incorrect post. 446 is for 17% hit which allows you to never miss a level 83 (or skull) boss. However, shamans have a 3% hit talent so you'd actually only need 368 or so. Include a moonkin or shadow priest and that drops to 288.

313 for me in heroics and still wearing a bunch of blues.
3xx for me too in basically the same situation. But now I'm wondering: Healing Stream should take into account all spellpower buffs. So it would be a little better to first drop Flametongue and then Healing Stream. Or did Blizzard think of this problem when they implemented the Call of XYZ abilities?

As I recall, Healing Stream is one of those that recalculates each tick. So what ever your spellpower is when a tick happens, should correctly affect it.

If you're a space goat, 342 hit is the cap for Elemental.
I'm sitting at 400 these days <.<

368 is the hit cap for Elemental Shamans. And yes, putting points in Elemental Precision is a must.
Hit is by far your biggest DPS boost. Don't gem for anything else until you make the hit cap.
where I'm at right now, I have a full hit enhancement set, but I'm trying to make up an elemental set with 4 or so nice elemental pieces I've picked up in heroics (mostly htoc, and mostly cloth/leather) the last week. so by mixing stuff from my enhance set, my resto set, and the new stuff, I've built a decent elemental set for if I want to switch.
but needing even less hit means I can sacrifice the not-so-good pieces (stuff that has hit but is blatantly for a difference spec) for more helpful pieces sans hit.
and yeah every gem that isn't on a part of my resto set is hit as of now. it's a good 'free' way to get ht rather than using far from optimal gear.
I wouldn't mix in any pieces from any enhancement set to make an elemental set. They will be lacking spellpower, which is your #1 gearing priority. Just use your resto gear.

I'm using 1 piece from my enhance set to get my to the hit cap. I just re gemd a bit because I'm over the cap on my enhance set. I don't know why I'm caring about both sets right now but meh, I've got some gold.
senshi I'm sure I would but I am more concerned with getting the little t9 I can access for my resto set (2 pieces). so while I can use the gear on my elemental set to some benefit, it's certainly not going to give me any hit. maybe eventually, if I play this character long enough or start getting into more content but as of now I don't expect to be getting t9 gear for my alt spec. although I guess once 3.3 comes thing will be different.
I have 10% to hit (9.99%, but I'm going to swap out a crap gem to get an extra 2 hit rating in the next day or two)
What's the rotation these days? When I quit, it was "Keep up flame shock, LvB whenever you can without interrupting a lightning bolt cast, spam lightning bolt otherwise". Do we want to weave in chain lightning on single targets again? I just have 2 piece tier 9, no significant tier 8 or 7 bonuses
What gear should I be chasing after? A decent mainhand never dropped for my guild, so I guess that's high on the list, but in general should I just go for ilvl232/245 t9 set pieces, or will I be better off crafting stuff, or what's the deal there?
Leave the gem. 1 in 10,000 chance to miss is okay. Plus you'll get way more hit than you need on ToC gear anyways.
Since chain lightning was added to Shamanism, it's worth using in your rotation, if you can spare the mana. A good compromise rotation is to cast it after Lava burst so you have Clearcasting up.
The Bejewelled Wizard bracers are a great crafted option, even though they're cloth. The orbs for them should be cheap now.
Head for 4 piece t9 first. The 20% to lava burst is pretty good. The badge gear isn't too great for Elemental, lots of mp5 and spirit on things you'd want.
You're a butthole because you already have the 2 best trinkets and I hate you. (Well maybe the one of Anub-25 is better.)
Edit:The triumph badge totem is good, it's basically a 100% uptime of 200 haste, which is really nice.
Lilac take a look at my armory to see equipment you can shoot for. You want 4pc T9, the legs being the exception. For legs get the leather ones I'm wearing. They're BiS. Bejeweled Wizard's Bracers are an easily attainable craftable that's BiS as well. They're amazing. The abyssal rune is a trinket that is waaaaay better than it's ilvl. I'm still using Sundial of the Exiled as well because I have 0 luck fighting with mages and locks for trinkets. For your weapon there are at least 3 good weapons from Trial of the Crusader in it's various modes. Two shields as well, with the Bastion of Resolve from 25m Faction champs being the best.
Man, I tell you what, I busted my back getting those trinkets
Then I quit playing for six months and now random idiots won't let me into their Onyxia pugs because my "gear score" isn't high enough
So are those really still some of the best trinkets to have? I noticed that swapping out dying curse for the ilvl 219 spellpower trinket didn't really affect my DPS as much as the spreadsheets said it would. I think they might have been over-valuing spellpower
Thanks a lot for the advice guys, I'll go craft those bracers. Should I get that Totem of the Electrifying Wind before the set pieces, or is it not a huge upgrade?
Edit #2: Should I swap out my hit&stam gems for hit&mp5? Last time I played I'd never run OOM even without thunderstorm unless I ankhed during a fight. With chain lightning in the mix, is OOM a concern even when replenishment is available?
He's right at 10% which is right for a Draenei with a shadow priest.
Getting to raid consistently with a shadowpriest? You lucky bastard...back in my raids, we didn't have shadowpriests...in fact, we didn't have any priests! We had to bandage the tank, both phases, through enrage timers, with dots raid wide!

in heroics:
spam chain heal on the tank
riptide dps
if tank gets below 60% spam lesser healing wave on tank
in raids:
spam chain heal on the tanks
on anub arak:
go DPS and let the druids and paladins heal

Take that, Gearscore.
You'll need 368, not 268 to hit the cap.
And don't worry about MP5...you should never have mana issues.
it's more than that. consider this done.
