Back when it came out, I bought SS2 not knowing what to expect. About 30 startles and seat-jumpings-out-of later I knew I was in love.
These days the Dark engine looks like crap. It only supports low, 4:3 resolutions and 16-bit color. The inventory looks all tiny the higher your resolution goes and the color gradients are clearly visible.
So can anything be done to make the engine look nicer? Anti aliasing, anisotropic filtering, maybe an interface overhaul? I know of the Rebirth project but I feel it makes the models look like floppy cartoony crap. Given that the default models are crap anyway.
I'm usually pretty adept at finding the answers to things like this but if there is a signal in my searches it's lost in a ton of noise.
So basically I'm looking for engine updates/hacks, and an interface/inventory hack. Any hints?
I remember that some community site had a crapload of them compiled into one package, I just need to find it on my HD. It still looks bad, but marginally less awful.
I have my SS2 running at 1440x900 without any stretching or blackbars, and with some very pretty texture packs, and the movies are fine. No idea how i got it at that stage though. It's been like that for the last 3 OS reinstalls.
Confession: to this day, I do not own an original copy of ss2 - I always had to use a pirated disc, because a) the German version was cut (n/c)
b) when I became aware of this incredibly awesome game, copies were hard to track down or ridiculously overpriced.
Shame on me
On a related note, why is there no steam/gog/whatever version of this gem?
The big problem was support in nvidia and ATI drivers for some components vital to the Dark engine were cut somewhere along the line, hence why it just shits itself when you try to play. Thankfully it was somewhat restored, and there is ddfix.

Fix'd
You need to patch and crack the game first of course.
Also there's nothing wrong with the interface once you get used to it.
DarkWidescreen seems to get the job done though. So that's good!
