Why is everyone trying to derail this thread? It's just a bitch thread about games you thought were sub-par. Liking everything your friends like only makes you a tool, anyway.
Because structures built on shoddy foundations rarely turn into skyscrapers.
The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. If a game lets you level yourself into a corner where you cannot progress, they have made a broken levelling system.

that's like complaining you can enter the console and set your level to max.
I twas on the 360, so no console. And I know I did it wrong. However, I should not be able to do it wrong, nor should I need a damn spreadsheet to PLAN MY LEVELLING!
You don't need a spreadsheet, but if you just blindly blow your points around without a clear strategy why is it bad that the game punishes you by giving you a shit character?
No, you see, this is the problem. I did what I wanted to in the SANDBOX. I built an assassin of repute and finished the dark brotherhood. However, stealth and marksmanship work for nothing against dinosaur monsters lurking around the corners in a cave. And I call BS on not needed a spreadsheet. That levelling system is so stupid vague and obscure.

Ok here's what you need to be able to not level yourself into a corner: Not be an idiot
Challenging, I know.
The leveling system is simple: You use a skill, it gets better. There are larger changes at 25, 50, 75, and 100 skill level. 10 increases in your major skills levels you up. On level up, your stats can increase based on skills you used.
Hey look, no spreadsheet, you just have to actually have and use a brain.
I played a stealth character, and amazingly enough didn't get outleveled by the game.

So you spent your time playing standing in a corner hitting one button over and over. And then you blame the developer on allowing you to do that? I stand by my point that you were doing it wrong. Although I have to admit that the PC version blows the console version out of the water, if only because it allows mods such as OOO to further change the game to be just the way you like it.

Yeah gears of war was awful because I didn't use cover and then got shot and killed. I SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO IT WRONG!
Not a valid comparison. Gears of War is not a sandbox game.
"I shouldn't be able to do it wrong" is a horrible stupid argument for any type of game.
I hope you all realize this thread will just devolve into everyone bitching at one another because they liked the game someone else didnt. This is just ridiculous and you all know it. I hated Mass Effect. I didnt buy it and Im happy I didnt. But guess who loves that game? Most everyone. Seriously this just doesnt work.
I could sit and complain that the story was too bogus and it was too boring of a game but then you could come back and say the story is an epic sci-fi awesome thing and is so good blah blah. Everyone ever on PA seems to hate the word opinion but it really comes into play heavily in things like this. This is all very much a giant bomb of opinion. And it will explode into fierce anger and thread locking. Just you all wait.

You make what assumptions you wish. I didn't cheat the system as you mention. And Khavall is dumbing down the levelling system to support his argument. No, I played the character I wanted to play and the game ended up punishing me for it.

No, I described the entire leveling system as it works. What did I leave out?
You cannot defend the Oblivion leveling system. It is indefensible. It is apallingly thought out in both principle and practice. Anyone defending it is wrong. Simply wrong.

You're not going to be able to change anyone's mind who posts in this thread. They read the title and go into troll mode. I know it's not my place to say, but perhaps changing the thread title to something less aggressive would calm the conversation and not promote opinions on others' opinions.
You left out the hidden, level so many subskills per actual level to get a bonus to the attribute that supports that subskill. You know, the one that lets you get the extra hp/fatigue bonuses? Simply levelling the subskills is, indeed, very easy. The ACTUAL levelling system is much more complex. And it's entirely possible to create a stealth character that cannot then stand up to melee combat. Is it my fault? yep, I said that at the beginning. But looking at the skill grind to get out of it made me quit the game in frustration. I loved the game up until I realized what I had to do to grind myself back out of that hole. I call that broken because I didn't choose to not use a very intuitive and available option to keep myself alive. I simply went through a questline that emphasized stealth and distance killing first, but screwed up the actual levelling as I went because I didn't figure out the bonus multipliers in time, and didn't skill any armor/melee subskills because I didn't need them at the time.

I did change it through OOO, yep. I mean, who hasnt? Doesnt make Oblivion a bad game, in my opinion.

I didn't like the leveling system in Oblivion because it seemed backwards. If you picked the skills you don't want to use a lot as your main skills, you end up with way higher level bonuses to your stats by only using those skills to level. Otherwise you level up a lot quicker but with way lower bonuses to your stats. It's counter-intuitive in a lot of ways.
Also I don't know of any other game where if you focus on non-combat stuff for a bit like making potions you end up making the enemies more difficult to fight.

its a trade off. you can either have your main combat skills advance with your levels at the expense of your max skill cap, or you can min/max to badassitude. it's not terribly intuitive, but what elderscrolls game really is?
The old adage about a fool and his money comes to mind. The only recent game that I bought full-price and regretted pretty shortly thereafter was Klonoa on Wii. But it was only $30, and I ended up trading it on Goozex for about $35 worth of credit, so I'm still pretty happy with my decision!
OP, you should just look into Goozex or eBay if your impulses betray you so much. Goozex is pretty much custom-built for people to offload very new games at pretty much full value, and you can use the credit to pick up two or three older games that you think you'll like more.
Kind of off Topic but what was wrong with Klonoa? I loved the original and was thinking about picking up the Wii-Remake at some point. Was it something to do with the remake you didn't like or was it just the game itself?
I really liked the first one but reviews said Mercs 2 had issues. I've never played it and would like someone who has to tell me how they fucked it up from 1 to 2.

I think it was just the game itself. I never played the original but wanted to see what the fuss was about, and it lasted me about 4 hours and didn't really compel me to go back through on the mirror levels/extra things after the initial playthrough. I have a PSP, so I felt like I would have been happier with it as a $5.99 PS1 download than a $30 Wii game. The remake seems to be really well done, although the super-cute kiddie aesthetic had me groaning 20 minutes into it, and that's even with leaving the English dub version off.
If there's not at least 5 to 10 games for the Wii that you don't like you shouldn't be playing videogames.
Edit: That being said, this doesn't happen to me very often, as I tend to avoid new releases and the only game I've ever bought at the $60 price point was Ghostbusters, and at least I got a $20 gift card out of that (Plus the game was awesome) I stick to the $30 and below games.
Yeah, I haven't bought a new Wii game in over a year. And I only turned it on most recently to review The Conduit (which was terrible, by the way). I have liked a few games on the system, and I want Metroid Prime Trilogy (since I never got around to buying Corruption), but I would be might pissed if I had paid for my Wii instead of getting it as a gift. It's exceptionally ignorant to say "if you don't like 5-10 games on Wii then you shouldn't be playing games." Some people have different tastes than you do.
That being said, I hated the Wii and every game on it that wasn't SMG and Zack and Wiki. SMBB got old a lot quicker than SSBM did, which surprised me. Other "great" Wii games turned out to be pure shit (MadWorld, No More Heroes), and there just wasn't much there to my liking. There are good games on the system, no doubt, but they're not for me, and the ones that are tend to be on 360/PS3 and look and control better anyways, so why would I play the Wii version?
Aside from that, Far Cry 2, Sonic Unleashed, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, Heavenly Sword and Gears of War.
Right now the biggest game like this that I can think of is Mass Effect. I just really really disliked what I played of it to the point where I feel like I must have a different disc than everyone else. The game feels unfinished. The graphics are pretty terrible and glitchy as hell. The story was bland, paced really awkwardly, and not compelling at all. The battle system just seemed insanely clunky. Overall it really had nothing redeeming about it. I know at some point I'm going to give it another try, though, so hopefully my opinion will improve.
Another one is, I suppose, Guitar Hero: World Tour. Yeah I had a bit of fun with some tracks, but the presentation and everything is just such a turnoff. I'd have rather spent that money on Rock Band DLC.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope was also another one I feel stupid for buying at full price. I mean good lord what happened with that? Annoying characters, kay. Bad graphics, kay. Shitty story, kay. Only good thing was a decent battle system, kay. Also, Kay... KAY... KAAAAAY! FUCK JUST LET ME KILL LYMLE!
Infinite Undiscovery: I want my 10 bucks back. I thought that just paying 10 bucks would make it at least an entertaining purchase. It wasn't. Terrible game.
