Right now the biggest game like this that I can think of is Mass Effect. I just really really disliked what I played of it to the point where I feel like I must have a different disc than everyone else. The game feels unfinished. The graphics are pretty terrible and glitchy as hell. The story was bland, paced really awkwardly, and not compelling at all. The battle system just seemed insanely clunky. Overall it really had nothing redeeming about it. I know at some point I'm going to give it another try, though, so hopefully my opinion will improve.
I'd disagree here. I played it the other day and still think the graphics look great, though the pop-in can be awful (ME2 is eliminating this). The story is more about the interaction between the characters, because yeah, the actual plot is pretty damned boring. But lord do I love the battle system.

I refuse to believe you're talking about the 360 version. I played with all the settings and things and just couldn't get it to look like anything other than ass. I firmly believe they put the shitty film gain there to hide just how bad their game looked. And the graphical glitches and things (the character seems to jump around a lot while running, for instance) and pop-in add to the graphical shittiness.

PC or 360?
Because the PC version, on the right computer looks stellar. I'm running through it again on my new PC, and man, it's gorgeous. With forced anti-aliasing and the in-game settings set to ultra high the game looks terrific.:^:

The problem with the ME graphics is that they used the same engine for generating characters that you use when you make a custom Shep. That led to some really awkward conversations where a human NPC looked like an alien.
The game had a lot of flaws in the story, but the canon BioWare developed is incredibly detailed compared to even MMO IP.
Waiting for someone to jump all over me and say I am "objectively wrong"
Don't worry, I'm not jumping on you.
I'm just curious as to if this is a general dislike for sandbox games? I used to feel this way about GTA and Oblivion, then I played GTA4 and loved it. I think that and FO3 are the exception, because I can't stand any other sandbox game, including Oblivion, and more recently, Prototype, (I hate that game).
I really liked the first one but reviews said Mercs 2 had issues. I've never played it and would like someone who has to tell me how they fucked it up from 1 to 2.
I sort of regret spending ~$300 on SFIV. I was way into SFII when I was a kid, so when IV came out I bought it for nostalgia. But the 360 controller sucked and I couldn't enjoy it because I felt like I was losing due to not getting the moves I wanted.
Sticks and fightpads were sold out everywhere, but I found a fightpad so I got that. Turns out the diagonals on the fightpad I got sucked and required a large amount of force to trigger. So I still felt like I wasn't getting everything out of the game.
So finally another batch of TE sticks showed up at Gamestop for pre-order so I got one.
$60 + tax for the game, $40 + tax for the pad, $170 after shipping for the stick, $20 after shipping for an octagonal gate.
Then it just ends up being that I'm not that into fighting games anymore. Played once in the past 3 months or so. My only consolation is that if I ever do want to play another fighting game at least I have a stick.

Sandbox games are wonderful. Oblivion suffers from a design standpoint. You can do everything with every character-but really that isn't a whole lot and its' not very interesting to do. Fallout 3 is the same thing for me.

My recommendation is to jump onto the Xbox Live Arcade and buy some of the old arcade games: Galaga, Pac-Man, etc. Or even pick up some of the retail collections that are out there.
Nothing like playing Pac-Man with an actual arcade stick.
Master of Orion 3. Not anyone's fault but my own, but if I had know the game was a graphical facelift on Mircosoft's Excel I wouldn't have taken the release day off.
...Well, probably not.
I still keep the game as a reminder to wait a couple of days even if I've pegged it a "must have", as you never know how it'll turn out.

You left out the hidden, level so many subskills per actual level to get a bonus to the attribute that supports that subskill. You know, the one that lets you get the extra hp/fatigue bonuses? Simply levelling the subskills is, indeed, very easy. The ACTUAL levelling system is much more complex. And it's entirely possible to create a stealth character that cannot then stand up to melee combat. Is it my fault? yep, I said that at the beginning. But looking at the skill grind to get out of it made me quit the game in frustration. I loved the game up until I realized what I had to do to grind myself back out of that hole. I call that broken because I didn't choose to not use a very intuitive and available option to keep myself alive. I simply went through a questline that emphasized stealth and distance killing first, but screwed up the actual levelling as I went because I didn't figure out the bonus multipliers in time, and didn't skill any armor/melee subskills because I didn't need them at the time.

I like Mercs2.
I found it to be glitchy, unpolished and completely devoid of any of the personality that made the first game so much fun.
The whole faction reputation system was a joke because the stuff you could get from the starting factions was basically garbage compared to what the AN and Chinese would give you.
And I'd like a word with whoever it was that decided that it was a good idea to call in an anti-tank airstike with a smoke grenade. I DO NOT WANT TO GET CLOSE TO THOSE TANKS THAT IS WHY I AM CALLING IN AN AIRSTRIKE.

I know it's bad form to make fun of a typo, but god damn, if the main character in the new Red Faction game was, in fact, a huge Martian ape with a sledgehammer that could knock down buildings, I would have bought that game day fucking one instead of allowing it to slowly percolate up my Goozex wants list for the past several months.
As someone who's prone to impulse purchases, I have plenty of examples of games I bought or traded for and wound up playing far too briefly enough that the enjoyment to dollar ratio wound up being skewed heavily towards "Dude, I probably should have waited for a sale or something".
But in most cases, I don't blame the game. Demigod, to pick an example at random, is a fine game. Just not for me. But hey, at least I'm somewhat supporting Stardock for being awesome.
There is one very large exception to this.
Black & White.
To this day I'm convinced that all of the glowing reviews for this atrociously broken piece of worthless filth were the result of Peter Molyneux and EA hurling giant bags of cash around with reckless abandon. Because while I was promised an in-depth and quirky "god simulation" game, instead I got a "watch some retarded animal waddle around and do whatever the fuck it pleases while you vainly smack at it with your disembodied yet useless god hand or try and corral it with Wonder Woman's magic lasso before it eats yet another bunch of villagers and then takes a big shit just to show you in explicit detail what you've just spent your hard earned money on" game.
Which, to put it mildly, is not nearly as entertaining.

Oh, I know it has many faults. It's still kinda fun to me. It's a lite sandbox game.
Game I bought that I thought would be good, but wasn't to me... Hmm....
I'd have to go with God of War for the PS2. I bought the first one shortly after the 2nd one came out. I picked it up because everyone was splooging over how good the game was. But I couldn't enjoy anything passed the fourth stage. It got really old really quick for me.
But, for some strange reason, I like the DMC games.

I think God of War kinda ripped off the DMC games, but they're both good series. I find myself continuously playing the demo for DMC4. Something else I need to buy a full version of. Joy.
I guess I just liked the main characters for DMC over GOW, even if Dante couldn't fill our dark souls with liiiiight.
I liked the DMC characters when it came to stuff that focused on plot and whatnot. Plus Dante's got long emo hair that makes me smile and laugh, so he's got that going for him. GOW's Kratos was a good character for whenever I felt like GOD WHY DOES MY LIFE SUCK SO MUCH I'M SO PISSED I'M GONNA GO KILL SOME GODS NOW!!!!!! Kratos wasn't good for much else than that, unfortunately.
For the longest time I regretted buying N3 - Ninety Nine Nights... but then I recently picked it up and played it again, it was actually pretty fun.
Oddly enough, I did the same thing... Got stonewalled on one of the missions and put it down for... about a year. Picked it up and breezed through that mission and unlocked a couple more characters. Got stonewalled again and put it down... coming up soonish I should try it again, maybe I can get that last character unlocked.

You cannot defend the Oblivion leveling system. It is indefensible. It is apallingly thought out in both principle and practice. Anyone defending it is wrong. Simply wrong.
I did change it through OOO, yep. I mean, who hasnt? Doesnt make Oblivion a bad game, in my opinion.
I got it for the 360, mods to unbreak broken things weren't an option.

GTA 4. The first missions are soo easy, then the timed ones I fail by a few seconds. That, or somehow cops start chasing me for no reason.
Ninja Gaiden 2. Ridiculously hard, and some parts just seem like they aren't meant to be beaten.
Halo 3. I just didn't think it lived up to all the hype. Great, but hyped like it was to be the greatest game ever. It wasn't.
Cops don't just start chasing you for no reason. You did something. You are guilty until proven innocent!
At one point, I didn't do anything wrong. Then I heard sirens and cops headed straight for me. So I carjacked somebody, because I was just walking down the street. Apparently, that didn't help. Who knew?

The only reason I started loathing it was when I thought I could play and beat a campaign on Expert. 3 minutes and 1000 zombies later, those hopes were dashed, curses and controllers were thrown about, and an Xbox 360 got forcefully turned off and not touched for hours in frustration. So if that's the reason you grew to hate it, you ain't the only one. I still love it, but don't go past Normal unless I'm filled with confidence.
