Been in a meeting all day and just saw this - I've been hoping for an announcement like this for so long, and will remain cautiously optimistic (and hopefully they tell us what we want to hear)...but seriously, between this and Mechwarrior, I may well just die from the sheer weight of awesome. And to think, I just rewatched ESB and reinstalled TIE Fighter this week, too. :P

man. i remember in xvt there was a mod that introduced a planet with a station in orbit around it. i hopped in a defender and put everything into engines so that i could fly around it. i gave up after like 3 hours.

i remember i had these games and then i lost them. but i used my mouse to play it. then i rebought it in some collection and it didn't let me use my mouse anymore, it was joystick only or something. really bummed me out.

I played TIE Fighter A LOT. It like never got old. And I was pretty young playing it so it was interesting to see how my playing of the game differed as I got older.

The TIE Bomber had the tightest turn radius when you dropped it down to corner speed, and thus was the choice of dogfighting champions who wanted -- nay, NEEDED -- the thrill of watching their opponents mouth oh fuc-- right before the glass in their canopy melted away and the blood in their face instantly boiled and then froze.

Actually, on second thought, you know what I really want in one of these games?

...A fucking accurate A-wing! That means autotracking turrets, damnit!

The A wing's lasers are articulated and have a small firing arc. It is how it is supposed to take advantage of its speed, becase accuracy isn't as important. So why does no game put that in? If Halo can have auto-aim, then a space sim certainly should if the ship was designed with it in mind...

It kind of shocks me that this was never in any of the Rogue Squadron games, for the record.

Rogue Squadron 1 had auto tracking blasters for the A-wing. It was why I hated flying it because I couldn't make precise shots with it.

I hope this rumor turns out to be true and it isn't Clone Wars or pre A New Hope bullshit. Get us back in to the good stuff.

Look, buddy, you suck too badly to be trusted in three dimensions, so we stripped the wings off your TIE and gave it some tracks, also spinners. Now get down there and make us proud.

I will store my massive nerd-boner until there is actually some news on this game. News that involves the words "Exclusively on PC, because seriously fuck those console bitches". At that time you may think there is an eclipse, there isn't. It's just me, blocking out the sun.

Also, TIE Interceptor for life. They are fucking space ninjas.
Screw all your fancy little nancy-boy shields and missles.
4 lasers, two engines and a layer of aluminum foil holding them together. That is how a man rolls in space.

I think that a deep part of the appeal of all of these games was the management aspect of your power levels. It let each person play like they wanted. Don't want shields? Dump that power. Need to go full out to get into missile range ASAFP? Guns into engines and arm warheads. Heck, they even let you set your firing style with 1, 2, or 4 cannons.

Yeah, this better not be a joke.

If they remake it, Im hoping they'll go all out and not simply port shit. The old tie-fighter/X-wing games were probably my favorite game(s) of all time, but some of the mechanics could probably use a tweak. I forget when, if ever, they let capital ships target more than 1 target at a time... there's nothing quite like chasing after an X-wing in a Tie fighter, mistakingly hitting your home ship Star Destroyer, and watching it stop attacking EVERYTHING and focus ALL LASERS/MISSILES ON YOU.

(EDIT) Marikir reminded me of the games shield mechanic. I always hated how they start you off with 50% shields. I inevitably spent the first 15-30 seconds (?) of the game just turning up my shield/weapon energy, diverting all my weapon energy to shields, and just letting shit charge to full before actually starting the 'real' mission. Unless I had to race for an objective (rare), I always started like this... kinda stupid.

TIE BOMBER is best for those with a death wish.

Slow+No Shields. Especially on a mission where you needed Rockets or Space Bombs.

Also, I found out about five years ago that I am juust barely good enough at TIE Fighter to beat all primary, secondary, and bonus objectives with a mouse and keyboard.

Nothing beat a regular TIE or TIE interceptor melee with flares enabled... in an asteroid field.

A little recognized fact was that the regular TIE could actually fire faster than most other ships (think this was in XWvsTIE and not the previous TIE game... so long ago...). So in a head-to head chicken charge with an X-wing, a regular TIE could win provided he unloaded a little early (knowing the X-wing would fly into the bolts that would eat through the shields and cockpit in a matter of seconds) and got out of there in time.

    Testicles.
    Balls.
    Cahones.

If you just had to reach down and make sure you had any, you're probably better off in those shielded craft.

Actually, I remember always draining my cannons (ion and laser) into the shields to quickly get them to overcharge full (which was the REAL full in my opinon) and then letting the cannons get back to full and overcharge as soon as possible. I did think it was odd that they had an overcharge power level, but didn't worry about it too much. Just worked with it.

I loved TIE Fighter. As a kid I got the expansion from a thrift store without realizing I needed the base game and tracked down the base game with my father. I didn't have a joystick, I played with the keyboard and mouse, but I had a ball.

I got X-Wing a few years later, but that game was much harder than TIE Fighter.

I liked Empire at War's interpretation of Impstars.

Doesn't matter what ships you have, you go up against an Imperial Star Destroyer and it will hurt like a motherfucker. If you've got a billion Y-Wings or B-wings and the Impstar's not backed up by Tartan Cruisers then maaaaaybe you can hurt it 'till it's interceptors fuck you up.

Mon Cals? Fuck that noise, the Star Destroyer will fuck them up right.

In fact, Empire at War with expansion is an awesome Star Wars game. I still play it every once in a while.

If the ground combat of Empire at War wasn't an abortion, that game would be really great. If they took Company of Heroes and skinned it with Star Wars, replaced the ground combat in EaW with it, and priced it at $50, I would buy it.

I would buy it two, maybe three times.

The space combat in that game, while it gets repetitive once you're steamrollin' bitches, was one of the most pleasant things ever. Because at that point you could just throw it into movie mode and watch the dogfights.

Obviously you can't expect much from X-wing due to when it was made, but I could close my eyes and gun down tie fighters since they repeated the same serpentine flight path.

Erotic subtexts aside, I just remembered what was wicked fun.

IIRC, in Allience, multi player you could give each player a certain budget? And with that you had a choice as to what craft, or collection of craft you would fly?

It used to be awesome fun to set it really really low so you could have say "4 Z95s" or "One Tie INT with concussion torpedos" or 6 really crappy smuggler ships.

Inspired creativity, and the combat was fast and furious because everyone had low HP.

    Those were the days.
