Well, the modem my family got through our ISP is on its last legs now(determined by intermittent intarwebs and the modem diagnostics popping up every few weeks showing that it's failed certain tests), and I have been given the mighty task of deciding on a new one to get, 'cause Earthlink doesn't want to give us a new one. In fact, they wanted to charge us eighty bucks for one, and we decided we could do much better on our own.
Normally, this wouldn't be a problem; I don't know much of anything about them, but I'm good at researching. However, I go back to college in a little less than three weeks, and I need to get it done by then.
What are the specs when looking at modems, and what do they translate into for plain English?
I managed to get a list of three brands from Earthlink that they support. I know other stuff can work, but this is what I wouldn't get a headache over trying to get working: ZyXEL, Netopia, and Speedstream.
For what it's worth, my family only has one computer hooked up to the Internet right now, over DSL. My younger sister just got a laptop for college, though, so my family would be interested in setting up wireless in the house so she can use it as well. We'd need to get a router for that, right? Is there anything with a modem that affects that, or just the router?
