Outboard motor

So a couple days ago, my grandpa's Yamaha decided to die. This is bad, because the only way we can get to our camp is by boat so we kind of need a working motor.

If I remember correctly, it was about 95 HP, and probably at least 10 years old, if not 15+, since it's been on that boat as long as I can remember.

I don't know anything about motors, but I want to check kijiji to see if there's anything good for cheap on there since a lot of people are getting rid of boats. He hasn't got the motor checked out yet, but I figure this is a good excuse to find something new and probably more gas efficient.

So what are the things I should be looking for? What is the average price for a motor around the same power as the old one? We don't need anything too powerful because the boat's mostly used for transportation and a bit of fishing on a relatively small, calm lake. The boat's around 16-18 feet.

Here is the local kijiji listing, if there's anything on there that's a sweet deal. I'm hoping to have maybe a small list to show my grandpa when he gets back.

Are you sure it is a 95 horse? That seems really big for a small boat.

I would take it in to a marine repair shop. Motors don't usually just die for good. and you will pay much less getting it fixed that you would buying a new one. Not only that, but you know the condition of the motor, you know how well it was taken care of and how often it is used.
Can't say the same about buying a used motor.

One of the most important things I've learned on this island was to buy the motor that is serviced by the best local technician. On my island that's Mercury, on the next island north that's Yamaha. Motors will eventually need to be serviced, so take a look at what's offered for service in your area and try and head that route with your new motor.

Are you sure it's not 9.5 horse?

95HP is probably fitting for a 14ft+ boat.
I would get the motor checked out at a local marine mechanic. It's almost guaranteed to be cheaper to fix than to buy new/used. My father in law has a 90hp johnson from the early 80's and it runs like a dream.
