well, I red ringed after the mandatory update, and apparently its happening to a lot of people, so I'm hoping they do SOMETHING for me that doesn't involve me spending 100 bucks to repair it

I would make the case that MGS4 is not, I repeat, not a must purchase. I strongly suggest it as a "rent first, buy it if you enjoy it".

MGS games have their devout, to be sure, but they are not for everyone. I myself am not terribly fond of their rather...strange....writing, and not-entirely-but-almost-adequate control scheme. Oh, and diarrhea jokes. I tend to frown upon those.

Definitely. I liked the first MGS on PS1, but stopped after that, and only got MGS4 because of the lack of new, exclusive games on the PS3 at that point. When I grabbed it, the controls felt so alien, especially after the Splinter Cell series which are so similar. It took quite some time and effort to come to grips with the controls. And the writing and storytelling is so ridiculous at times.

That's not to say I didn't love the shit out of it - when I finally got the controls it was really fun, and I let myself get carried away by Kojimas often retarded story. But not everyone is going to like the obtuse controls (thankfully Ryan Payton got SOME new control methods implemented). The games definitely not something everyone will enjoy.

You probably won't get anything out of it. Mandatory update or not, it's out of warranty.

The controls are the least of MGS4's problems.

Seriously one of the most disappointing games I have ever played, especially considering how much I love MGS 1-3.

I think it's something though where you have to experience it, to know the shame of it's production, the squandering of it's potential. So if you're a fan of the series, you must play it once.

If you wanted to jump in with MGS4, take my advice and don't. If your PS3 has BC, go play MGS3. If not, go play MGS.

Most of MGS4's story problems seemed to just be Kojima saying "fuck it, I don't want to make Metal Gear games for the rest of my life, I'm wrapping every single thread up into one big ball". It wasn't coherent at times and could've done with a lot more editing (with some redundant cutscenes cut entirely) but I still really enjoyed it.

Oh and I wouldn't attribute the improved gameplay to Ryan Payton. He also worked on MGS: Portable Ops, which has fucking terrible gameplay, mostly because you could control the camera.

I'm pretty sure I read that the ability to shoot in 3rd person was something he brought to the game, which I loved. I don't think I ever aimed 1st person in it. But yeah, Portable ops is terrible because of the camera.

For some reason US publications seem to credit Ryan Payton with every gameplay change they made in MGS4, despite the fact that he's not credited for any of its design. According to the games credits, he worked more on the western collaberations (voice acting, opening sequence, etc).

It's not like the over-the-shoulder camera is unique to western game design, RE4 was the one that actually popularised it.

I'm in the exact same boat. MGS4 was the reason I picked up the PS3 over the 360. Which every single one of my gaming friends, minus one, has. And not one of them tried to convince me otherwise, as they knew it was futile. I like MGS2. A lot. And yet MGS4 was beaten out of pure spite rather then anything remotely close to enjoyment.

This is where the Valkyria Chronicles plug normally is, so here it is. Squad Seven :^:

Well, I sure liked MGS4. I'm a big proponent of lower-selling PS3 titles like Valkyria Chronicles and Siren: Blood Curse. I also probably put around two hundred hours into Fallout 3, and I definitely got a helluva lot more out of GTA IV than most people around Penny Arcade seemed to - that said, MGS4 was my GOTY for '08.

Acts I and II were very good, I thought. Three sucked many balls, but four was an absolute fanboy joygasm and the final half of Act V was a total emotional thrill, not to mention that insanely good-looking boss fight.

:^: try before you buy, and all that - but I loved it.

You should definitely try MGS4, it's tied (with Uncharted) as being my favorite game on the PS3.

And I only played MGS2 back when it came out, I knew basically nothing about the story going in, so it's not like I'm some huge Metal Gear fan. Some of the best graphics/cutscenes I've ever seen, and a lot of the gameplay elements were very fun.

If you're into that sort of thing, you may want to hold off for a trophy patch for MGS 4. They had some sort of Kojima-esque non-announcement not too long ago.

Also, I'm a Valkyria Chronicles convert. Play it. Now.

Also, Fallout 3 for the PS3 is god-awful. Don't buy it for this platform at all.

Despite being a big fan of their work personally I am getting a bit sick of KP's constant teasing and announcing of future announcements. Valkyria and MGS4 are the two games I want the most to have trophy patches but if it was going to happen it would have done by now. All PS3 owners should at least try these games, trophies be damned.

Big Boss running the game for stealth camo is a nightmare, thankfully I think saves were quite liberable but still, fuck up attacking Ocelots mansion and you're starting way back outside hte compound, its a nightmare. I wouldnt want to g through that twice for the trophy.

Sony should really work on a method of ID-tagging saves to the account so that they can be shared but hte trophies only go to the original owner.

So I'm finally looking to dip into the PS3 world, but it appears that now is an awkward time to do so. Some exclusives like Demon's Souls and my want of a Blu-Ray player have spurred my interest and so I've been saving up, but backwards compatibility is more or less a must for me. I still have a slim PS2 that works great, but I really don't want to have to keep it around for my PS2 RPG backlog. So I'm crossing my fingers that we get a slim PS3 announcement next week and that it has BC included, otherwise it looks like I'm going to be seeking out an old 60GB model, which makes me a bit nervous. I don't particularly like to by systems used.

Since fixing up my old, rundown 360 is also an option, my sale may eventually end up being determined by the price point and BC of the Slim (assuming Sony is preparing to announce it).

Why? It's not like the PS2 takes up much space. If you are wanting BC from the PS3 slim you are setting yourself up for disappointment. The old 60GB isn't as reliable as the newer PS3s, caveat emptor if you buy second hand.

I've heard claims that hardware BC and software BC are inferior/superior/the same. For the life of me, I can't tell the difference.

Though I do think that hardware BC manages to avoid having lag in cinematics/videos in PS2 games. Which is kind of annoying, but not a deal breaker. Otherwise, I'm quite pleased with the BC in my 80GB model (60GB models, at the time, were considerably more expensive).

Are there any significant differences in terms of in-game rendering and the like? I haven't been able to see any.

Are there any significant differences in terms of in-game rendering and the like? I haven't been able to see any.

Can't help sorry, I'm rocking the PAL 60GB which has the software emulation. I've heard about the Hardware BC being better too, but Software seems fine to me - the only issue I've had in any of my games is some occasional slowdown in MGS3.

Also, Fallout 3 for the PS3 is god-awful. Don't buy it for this platform at all.
Other than the PS3 being the forgotten adopted child locked in the basement in terms of DLC how does it compare to the 360 version? I hit some irritating glitches in my play-through but nothing game-breaking.

    (1) - All versions of Fallout 3 have bugs, the 360 and PS3 are very comparable, from what I've heard.

(2 @phenko) - oh give me a break! I've put better than 200 hours into Fallout 3 on my PS3, and it's a helluva lot better than never having played Fallout 3 at all. I can count the amount of glitches I've encountered on one hand.

That's like telling someone not to buy the PS3 Orange Box if they want to play Portal, but don't have a PC capable of running it. No matter how you port it, a great game is still a great game (though if you want the definitive Fallout 3 experience, you want it on PC - not that I haven't heard some pretty extreme horror stories about bugs with the PC version).

Edit: also, PS3 is getting the DLC, though I doubt this October release date for all 5 is rock-solid.

At this point, you really don't want to buy Fallout 3 on any system. Wait for the GOTY edition, which should be out in October/November, it'll have all the DLC included.

That's my plan. Glad I waited.
