Low Ping, No Packet Loss, Really Bad Lag

So last night our DSL modem died. To replace it we got a netgear DG834G. Since then, whenever I decide to play Heroes of Newerth, I appear to have no connection problems on their chat server.

Join a game, and it's another problem.

The odd thing is my ping is shown to be about 74, but when I type something and hit enter, the words show up literally 10-30 seconds later. I can switch teams fine, but choosing a hero or even playing the game allow actions to happen 10-30 seconds after they are issued.

I'm REALLY confused by this situation. I don't think it's my computer, and believe it's something to do with the new router, but everyone in the household thinks I'm nuts.

So...any takers out there?

    You got a netgear.

If you have vista turn off remote differential compression.

Disable all firewalls and remote security suits and anti-virus programs.

If it still doesn't work probably the netgear.

No packet loss to where? That sounds like a packet loss issue because UDP is the common protocol used for video games and it will cause problems exactly like you are mentioning. It could also be a bad ethernet cable somewhere (which would cause the packet loss issue through transmission problems or worse, negotiating a half-duplex connection)... did you change any cables?

All firewalls on my computer are disabled, no cables have been changed (aside from the new one bought with the modem tying into the DSL line.

I'll give you suggestions a shot tonight. My brother is in IT and he'll help out. I'll be back here to give you guys the scoop asap. Thanks for the input.

Also - the packet loss is confusing simply because I have nowhere to ping. I doubt s2games would give me the ip to one of their game hosting servers. It's hard to verify what it is.

Run "netstat -b" from a command prompt while you're connected. It will list all of the active connections and the executable that is using them.

    Netgear is notoriously crappy.

sounds like your router or modem, whatever it is, can't handle the packet transfer required by a game. maybe not packet loss but choke. you need to open up the tubes man.

I suggest you perform a packet flush. if that doesn't work replace the flux capacitor.

but seriously, you might look into returning that Netgear, and replacing it with one exactly like you had.

Start by pinging your gateway with a 100 count (your routers internal IP address) then, ping your routers gateway. At that point, do a 100 count ping to the servers IP address. If the servers IP address shows an issue then perform a traceroute and see if it's a hop owned by your ISP. If it is owned by your ISP then good luck getting the ticket jockey at "tech support" to even understand the problem.
