    Mindsack and Mully.

Sorry yours is kind of lame Mindsack but a lot of the stuff I felt had been covered so much in other critiques that I thought I could save a little time by just pointing you to them. It is a nice drawing though.

thanks cake. The contrast wasn't actually adjusted intentionally, But I cant seem to get my old scanner to not auto tone. I'll try and fix that for later. Crit wasn't harsh, it was helpful. If I redo the little gesture drawing a few times will you take a look at them? I'm out of town for the weekend but i'll be drawing/on vent on monday.

Yeah sure, though I do like the little gesture you have there. I just don't think it translated as well into the full figure.

Yeah, I kinda tend to erase a lot so I sort of loose my lines and end up measuring from negative space, especially when I work from photos. This one I feel like I may have just done a pretty weak gesture for the full one anyway. I'm also interested in your curvy line structure, so I'll try to incorporate that into some gestures. I'm very boxy, so it seems like something to play with.

    Thanks cake!

I was actually going to smooth a lot of the shading out and actually finish the other hand. I was also going work on tone more, but I couldn't find any of my other pencils. That was all done with an F. So I just kinda threw in the towel.

Don't worry, the next assignment I won't veer off and I'll actually finish it completely.

    Thanks again!

Thanks cakemikz, I drew it on a piece of printer paper so it ended up being very small and I had to bullshit the neck and right arm quite a bit. I've gotten comments before about presentation, many a time, I'll make an effort to keep that in mind for the next one, which I'm looking forward too.

Thanks Cake! Your critiques helped me a lot -- I'll remember them with the next assignment.

In regards to your critique - I've never done any figure or life drawing at all, so my foreshortening issues are ... well, I don't know. Not from that, anyway.

Alright, ya jerks. ~14 hours, 90% .5 HB mechanical pencil, with slight usage of a 2H .5 lead, and minimal usage of a 2B .5 lead.

I screwed up the face and feet a bit, and couldn't get that hand right (so it's not there! Woo!). I was really happy with it up until I got to the feet/hand, haha. (Still decently happy with it). Looks better in person. :C

I decided to take some process shots (there were lots of measuring marks made in between these steps, but I erased them as I went on).

Nah, I think you captured something in her face!

The reason I think that you feel it has no emotion is because the sheer accuracy of construction robbed the lines of their energy - maybe if you did it (weird suggestion, I know) in photoshop, I've known guys who can get huge amounts of energy by simply repeating strokes over and over with ctrl + z until they have the "right line".

Well let me first start out with saying. Terrific drawing Night Dragon.

At first glance the drawing appears almost perfect. Then when I started analyzing the anatomy almost the entire thing fell to pieces. You see value and shape incredibly well but even the most observant person cannot copy a shape exactly and when you are just copying the shape and not realizing whats causing it- its clear to see. Now its time to get down on some anatomy. Ive only pointed out two very obvious anatomical errors if you would like me to nit pick the entire drawing to get my point across Ill do it when I have time.
    seven

re reading my notes on the drawing I realized I didnt make myself clear as to why the back of that knee bothered me. IT was mainly that there is a clear distinction between the vastus lateralus and the biceps femoris in the reference and in your drawing it is a bit fuzzy. Also I forgot to mention that there is a fatty pad especailly on women that sits on the back of the knee so it also influences surface form. Also I didnt get into this with my paint over but if you analzye your shape running down the gastrocnemius you will
see that you have it as pretty much just a straight line. (I feel this is where cake will step in and tell you your observation slipped, but I feel your observation is good its your ignorance showing) In the reference you can see it has a few distinct breaks at plane changes. I can get into what is causing just about every shape on the surface but I dont know how benificial an unorganized anatomy lecture would be. The subject is difficult enough with out pulling it out of my ass on the spot.

Once youve internalized even some basic anatomy you will be in very very good shape drawing wise. Again I find this very impressive. PErsonally I dont have the pateince to bring a drawing to this level. I rush things along the way or I try to take shortcuts and end up cartooning.

Drawing and analyzing can be relaxing. Focusing your mind so completely on something is a great way to relieve stress.

Part of the fun is in the analysis, atleast for me.

Max its really not the way my mind works at all. I dont look at people and start thinking in anatomical terms. ITs like I go to a shelf in my brain and open the book. Then I close it and put it away. And anatomy is beautiful, it actually adds to the enjoyment. When you look at some one who really knows anatomy and you know what your looking at its like listening to music because you can see what notes they are hitting hard and where they are going soft..(this sounds pretentious but really most people just dont get it...)

waaaaay to many people think anatomy is only for doctors or somehow its going to ruin your artistic creativity. If anything it does the exact opposite and gives you many many more tools to be creative with. Drawing has become much more enjoyable for me now that I have a pretty good idea of what the hell im trying to draw. I think its the process of learning anatomy that gives some one this false impression of ruining creativity. Working out is fucking painful but it makes you look good. So suck it up buttercup.

And fuck latin and all its gheyness. They need to write the books in americun

When I was at JFK airport about 2 months ago I found myself staring at the legs of this woman who had the most incredibly well defined musculature. I spent like 5 minutes trying to map it out and work out which muscles were which, etc, and I didn't realise that she had noticed me staring. When she asked what I was doing I told her I was looking at the junction between gastrocnemius, vastus internus and biceps femoris (that exact spot on the drawing, ohgodbees) and she seemed totally confused.
