Horror Story Fairy Tale?

Anyone know of a fairy tale that is particularly scary or horrific? Optimally something that is a fairly short story, has a good plot and is in the public domain.

I'm writing a small demo for my game engine so don't want anything to elaborate; but still something that has a good scary plot to it. :)

Look into Struwwelpeter or the original versions of Grimm's fairy tales.

Rumplestiltskin always freaked me the fuck out when I was little.

Edit: I don't know if it's public domain or not.

The first thing that came to my mind was the story of Bluebeard.

There's always the classic Baba Yaga.

Seconded. Modern watered down fairy tales aren't scary at all, but the stories they were originally based off? Yikes.

    Ooh, Baba Yaga..

Also, Pinoccio (the actual story, not the movie) is surprisingly freaky, and you can find it on Gutenberg. I loved it, but it will further illustrate for you the difference between what people tell their kids today and what they did a hundred years ago.

Get a copy of the original Grimm Fairy Tales. They are all pretty fucked up a creepy compared to the Disney-fied modern version. Also, old as shit so public domain.

Public domain is right. Some of then are hosted on National Geographic's website. Not sure if they're the original translation, but from what I've read they're definitely a lot darker than the disney-fied crap.
