I think that due to traffic and bandwidth they'll keep the front page as a static cache on the server. Adding comments would increase the server load (as it would have to either render the page dynamically or reset the cache every minute or so).
It's a great idea, and I'm for it - but there are too many issues involved implementing it and moderating it (spam, spam, spam).

fuck your forums, fuck your administrator and fuck dynagrip for getting away with the long troll.
Or you could post in SE's New Comic thread. People tend to comment on the news posts in there.

And Gabe actually reads the new comic thread.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I hate to question people's intelligence, but I have a feeling you'd get a lot of people posting expecting direct responses from Gabe and Tycho as well. On the other hand, if something strikes you particularly wrong/right in their post, I don't think there's anything in the rules stopping you from creating a new thread in the appropriate forum to discuss it.
TBH I don't think a site with that much readership being channelled into what averages out at one post a day would generate particularly useful content. Or, more accurately, the signal/noise ratio would make the whole thing redundant.

Gabe and Tycho's posts are usually well written and to the point. I don't see the comments of the masses, some of which are drooling morons, improving on them.

If you just want your comments on the site to be heard by other PA readers, post in SE++'s new comic thread.
