what if everyone had something to indicate when they are online, like the mods have. only it would be more discreet. i just think it would be useful and more convenient than the "who is online" button.

Why would we need this option? And "desperate need for attention" is not an answer.

if this WERE to be implemented, i'd hope for a mere :^: to be in the little box if the person is online and a :v: if they are not

I've lost count of how many times people couldn't work out why I didn't answer them when I'd left for work
I understand having an in-post message for mods, but for regular forumers... I dunno, I just can't see what would be so pressing you'd have to know if someone is online.
There's a way to make it so you can tell who's browing a specific board, even. They've got it down at hannity.com (for those of you that care, I rarely go there anymore. It's too uptight.) I don't know how they do it, but I bet if Ramius contacted their admin or one of the mods, they'd tell him how.
Basically what it looks like is under the board name (while your browsing the board, looking for a thread to click on), there's a link to anyone who's currently browsing the specific board. You can click their name, and it brings up their profile.

Users interacting with the script toggles a flag to say they are online or not, to individualize it there would have to be a new routine thrown into every thread page display, it would have to track user names against the whose online list and display the proper graphic...
Its not hard to do. Its just a pain in the ass to get arround to actually doing it.
Oh it functions like the avatar does too... You could even let people choose urls for thier own 16x16 or 32x32 (or whatever x whatever)online offline graphics, or to disable it completely.

yeah, I've given this consideration before.
The "Who is reading this thread" thingy I purposely left off or took out or whatever because of the volume we get, it would be too long of a list.
The "I am reading the forums right now!" indicator is not hard at all to implement. And in fact, it would add no meaningful overhead to the processing because it would basically be "add this field to this SQL query" and "do an if statement based on that field". But I have a couple issues that hold me back from implementing it.
1) I'm not particularly fond of "Hi Bogey!" posts. Having an indicator that you just came online would (further) encourage that.
2) The indication that you have gone offline would be based on a timeout unless you click the "Log Out" link. So it may appear you are here when you really aren't. This causes user confusion.
3) Most non-lurkers are posting when they are here. You will know they are online because they just made a post. Seeing a little light next to their name after they post won't make any difference since you just saw them post. You already KNOW that they are online.
4) Considering the above, the exceptions can be handled rather easily by using the Who is Online link.
I think the general consensus is, people just wanna know when they've got a Bogey on their Six.
Indeed.
Alpha: Give me my bogey indicator or the bunny gets it
Until alpha gets around to doing something about this, I can go hide in the bushes outside Bogey's house with a walkie-talkie if you want, provided someone swings buy every once in a while with something to eat.

I have no idea what anyone here is talking about...

I though you guys would detect the sarcasm in my post. I linked you to who is online Oh well, I dont think any good can come from an "online light" ever for a man as cool as Boegy.

i was thinking maybe we could have a little icon of this:

That's already there in the Who is Online page...
It would take up a huge ammount of space at peak times in SE.

Considering the forums revolve around when Bogey is online, can you just have a box where it tells us when he is around?
It would reallly make my day.
Yes, up with the bogey indicator.
Perhaps a "Bogey's online" indicator
Indeed.

It doesn't work! I don't see Bogey...
Oh, I see... my fault! Great job on the coding!
Another wonderful coding job brought to you by Alphamoney!
