[Wii Shop] 8/10 - Super Star Wars, NyxQuest, Rock N' Roll Climber, Brain Age Express
I'll definitely concede that, technologically (given the limitations of their time), FF3 was probably the most impressive achievement... you make many good points there, and all are true and valid.
But the real meat of what makes an RPG classic - the storyline, characters, etc... - FF6 was unbeatable. I guess I'd call FF3 an accomplishment where I'd call FF6 a masterpiece... but either way, both good in their own right.
While FFVI is an awesome game, FFIV is still my favorite pre-Playstation era Final Fantasy. Golbez was too awesome a villian to not be the best.
So hey, this was weird: I occasionally go to Nintendo press events as part of my side gig writing tech stories for the magazine I work for, and I'm headed to a holiday event this week; I just got an e-mail listing some of the games that will be highlighted, and lo and behold a little WiiWare game called "Cave Story" showed up! I'll report back if they have a solid release date for it.
Well, I will just take comfort in being able to play it weeks before everyone else. :rotate:
They had it at PAX.
Oh, I know a bunch of people have gotten hands on it, I was just poking fun.
In all seriousness, it's kind of cool that Nintendo actually listed the damn thing for media to witness. It's right there next to New SMB and Wii Fit Plus and their other stuff lined up for the holidays; I figured Cave Story would just be a hard-core bone thrown to the gamer crowd, but if mainstream press has a chance of telling people about it I'm jazzed as hell.
Played about an hour of LostWinds 2, it's really good. The world seems much bigger. I guess 2-3 times as large, and the environments are way more varied. The game starts off a bit... iffy. I don't want to spoil it, but people who'll play it will probably see what I mean. After about 30 minutes the game totally picks up, and becomes similar to LostWinds 1, but better. I thought that LostWinds 1 was the best WiiWare game so far, and this one easily tops it, so I'd say yes, this is the best game on the WiiWare service. You want to play them in order though, you keep all your moves, and you "relearn" all of them in a way too short tutorial.
Whoa Dover is like 15 minutes from my house. That's just weird.
Oh, cool! Where you at? Are you in Portsmouth? Dude, you should've come on the CCST to PAX, I put out the call for others and I got no responses from anyone in New England. =(
EDIT: On a sad note, LostWinds was not released for Australians, I've no idea why. Link
AH! As a person who's seen my friend Jesse begin his research into trying to get our game released in Europe, I can tell you exactly why:
To get your game released in Australia, you have to go through what is probably the most painful (and expensive) approval board process in the entire world. They go over your game like a fine-toothed comb, and you have to pay for it. Financially and in time delays as they go over every blessed detail looking for something they would consider "uncouth" or "deviant".
In the end, I get the feeling that most companies can't justify the cost. We're going to try our best to release our game there as long as we have the money to do so, but if you want to know why Australians never get games I've found that out first hand. It's more painful, more time consuming, and more expensive to release a game in Australia than it is in any other "first world" (as they say) country in the world... probably combined. And in the end, if they decide your game can't be released there due to its content, you'd have to do the whole expensive process over again (after having taken out possibly large aspects of your game) to have a second chance.
So the thread creator, who has been unable to edit his OP because he got jailed, is now banned. Guess we're stuck with the 8/10 stuff for a while longer.

I think mods can edit thread titles too. Someone should PM one and ask for a favor.

Ahhhh! That sounds like it woulda been fun, however I was unaware...
I live in Epping by the way. It's odd how few forumers live in NH. There's like none over in the AC...

So in other news, I agree that a new thread should probably be made in light of the current situation. I don't think I would realistically make an OP of the quality that he used to in order to keep it up to date though... he really took the time to get a lot of content/images and such it looks like for each game, and I'm admittedly flaky. =( Anyone else want to take the helm on it?

Finished the second Lost Winds in one sitting in <4 hours. Great game, albeit a bit too short for my taste. I collected 46/48 of whatever collectibles you have to collect in this game without going out of my way to find them, and I'd have say it's somewhat easier then in the first one, and the map really helped (don't remember it beeing in the previous game as well).

So I finally can use the Wii store, and grabbed 2000 Wii points. I've been looking at Lostwinds 1 and 2, NyxQuest and World of Goo, since I heard they were good (though 1500 points for World of Goo is really odd). What other good Wiiware titles are there?

Doctor Mario is great with two players, Bomberman is fun with a larger group of people (up to 8), and I quite enjoyed Final Fantasy: My Life as a King back when it came out, and that's about all I played.
WiiWare World of Goo has coop I believe? If so, then the 1500 points are to be forgiven.

Also, I got Me you and the cubes the other day, and I really really like it. It's a steal of a puzzle game at that price.
I also got BT:core and found it to be not so great, I think it's just that I like the gameplay of beat more...

Yep, LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias. I've finished downloading seconds ago, so it's time to get playing!

Not sure if that's true, but it does look like it will top the first one.
