Here's a novel concept, how about $1 = $1. That way we don't have to convert anything!

This is why I really prefer Sony's no-points approach for PS3/PSP.

That said, I'll gladly spend 240 MS points for a Warthog (they are $3, right?).

    sick.

It's also a free loan. 10 million subscribers, say half of them have 100 points just sitting around on their account. That's a free 6 million dollars Microsoft gets to stash in the bank and make interest on.
Yep, that's me. That's just money in Microsoft's coffers until I go out and buy more points so I can get something useful like a game or add-on. It really is a nice little system they've set up for themselves.

You know, about the $1 = $1 thing, with the new games on demand service, you can buy that stuff on your credit card in real money terms (say, £19.99 here).

OK they are a bit pricey at the mo, but we may now find that more content starts getting the "real money" treatment in addition to funbucks.

Yes they are. I buy my carnival tickets by exchanging real money for carnival-only money. Shit inside the carnival costs multiple tickets to do. If I don't spend all my tickets they don't give me a refund for the 6 leftover tickets out of 20 when I leave.

It's actually _exactly_ like MS points.

Meh. I've never been to a carnival where I could buy exactly as many tickets as I wanted. I also don't think I've ever managed to use exactly as many as I bought. But it doesn't matter. I look at my points balance, compare it to what I want, and then decide if that's worth picking up 1,600 from GS or buying 1,000 via PayPal.

I guess maybe I don't hate it so much because most things eventually even out. XBLA are typically 400, 800, or 1,200 while RB songs are 160. The oddball there is RB songs, and that evens out once I buy 5 of them (800).

And you see my reply to him. They're the same thing. They're both fake money systems designed to get you to spend more than just handing the carnie (or MS) $1 to play the game where you throw baseballs and milk bottles.

The part where we have a difference of opinion is whether or not it is some horrible Earth-shattering atrocity.

Also you can buy points in the following denominations (that I know of)
    400
    1,000
    1,600
    2,000
    4,000

400 is from the Zune store.
1,000 and 2,000 are via PayPal
1,600 and 4,000 are via cards bought at Target, GameStop, etc.

I'm sure there are more, but it's not like they're saying "you'll buy $50 worth of points or nothing!"

Anyways I am rather enjoying the Clone Wars and Bioshock 2 additions to the avatar marketplace, I don't really buy a lot of arcade titles or add-ons (I did buy TMNT : TiT and the new map pack for COD:WaW however) so I don't mind using the remainder of my points from a 4,000 point card on stuff for my avatar, well not the full remainder but a few hundred here or there.

The last one I went to didn't; I think 4 was the minimum for adult rides. They also let you buy individual tickets, but they were so overpriced that it really didn't make sense not to buy the bundles.

Ultimately, yes, Microsoft is banking on people having leftover points, and that's why they've set the system up as such, but I think between the various point-purchase options the most someone would have left over is three or four dollars.

Don't forget you can also purchase Zune cards (I more often see those in the supermarkets than XBL point cards, and my local radio shack has a much larger ratio of Zune cards than Xbox Point Cards) in higher point values. I just bought a 2000 point Zune card the other day since they were out of 1600 Xbox Live point cards.

I'd still rather have actual monetary units rather than funbux though.

Clothing and prop prices make me rage. Today I bought the Gorillaz song pack for Rock Band 2. 3 songs for 440 MS Points. Now let's take a look at this:

    160 MS Points per song
    4 instruments per song
    4 difficulties per song
Multiple modes each song can be used in
Playable online with other people as well as in the living room

And yet, Microsoft feels it is acceptable to charge me 400 MS Points for a body suit for a paper doll. Points need to be better gauged for content. None of this avatar crap should ever go above 80 MS Points if you ask me. Now if you will excuse me, I need to go have a few shots and convince myself that I do not need to buy the steampunk clothes and big daddy helmet.

I almost feel they need something similar to Home (where you walk around) so that you can play with the shit you buy. This is why I am hesitant on buying the accessories. That, and I saw a video on Kotaku weeks ago where the guy bought the Warthog toy and it didn't really show up much.

They need to release real NHL jerseys. I would buy a few of those like a true sucker.

I had literally 80 points left over from my last card, so I bought the Steampunk goggles. After putting on a new 2400 point card, I perused through the marketplace but I felt an overwhelming sense of buyers remorse for shit that I hadn't even purchased yet. Thus, I didn't buy anything more.

I just can't bring myself to spend anymore points on this thing right now. I think I'll just do what I did today and spend any extra leftover points that really can't buy anything else from here on. That lightsaber still tempts me, but until they add friendlist support for props, there's no fucking point.

Yeah, probably the same stuff that's on the site - it has all the stuff I've downloaded (including free stuff and demos) since I got my 360 in 2007.

All they need to do is to add some categories like in the regular Marketplace sections and I'm satisfied.
