This is my first real thread on PA so forgive my noobiness.
So I came in to some gundam 1/400 scale figurines, and I've been wondering lately what to do with them. The thing is, though I've played table top games in the past, I'm relatively new to wargames.
I was looking at the official rules for this game and they seemed blowful. It is essentially move and attack until one team is destroyed. The only thing that seemed even remotely interesting is that the game has a funnel system, but since my figures are strictly 0079, that won't apply to me.
So what do you guys normally do in this situation? If this were a fighting game, I'd just drop it, but I have all these figs and I want to use them for something. Do you come up with your own rules, or do you apply the rules of another game to your figures? It seems that there are gundam plug-ins for a few games, but I'm hesitant to shell out for a book of a game I will never play for real.
Make up your own ruleset, or modify an existing ruleset to fit what you want. They'll both be time intensive, but rewarding in the end.
Or you could make absolutely bitchin' DnD4e mini's out of them.
"Oh, you've got a 4th level dwarf fighter? I've got a 14 level MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM. It deals 4dLAZERS, and has an at will attack, close burst 150000x10^4, that every named character DIES. What's that? Reaping strike? Pffft."
I've actually considered something similar with my Transformers. I have some old Micromasters that are perfect scale for some mini-wargaming.
As for how to do it... I'm also open to ideas.
My first idea was to find other mech miniatures of a similar scale in order to do something like super robot wars. But yeah, it was impossible to find minis that were the same size. The Big O ones were too large, and they were the ones I really wanted.

You know what I thought would be interesting, especially to help simulate the relative clunkiness of say, 0079 mobile suits?
Run that shit with modified Battlefleet Gothic rules.
I like BattleTech. Hit locations and stuff are already in the system and there are plenty of good starting references for weaponry. You'd mostly just need to decide how to add the 3rd dimension and then update the flavor appropriately, I would think.
Somebody told me not to use battletech because it's more of a slugfest sort of game. I don't actually know, though. I kind of want to simulate the gorilla style combat of 8th MS team with the 0079 space dueling.

Yeah, I heard the same about Battletech. Dunno, Battlefleet Gothic might work. It'll take a lot of modifying to make it work in a ground setting, but it shouldn't be too hard.

I've always heard that DP9's Silhouette system worked best.
If only because the two main games that use the rules, Jovian Chronicles and Heavy Gear, were pretty much based on Gundam and VOTOMS, respectively.
Though, in all seriousness, you might want to look at them. The damage model for HG is probably the best suited for this, since damage is based on your weapon's ability to penetrate armor, rather than armor points and whatnot.
Also your avatar and sig are three times better than typical avatars and sigs.

Also worth looking into is the Interlock System's very own Mekton Zeta, on which the official Mobile Suit Gundam PnP RPG is built around. Sadly, the sourcebook never got translated into English.

I was actually messing around with converting some gundam 0079 stuff to battletech/megamek a few weeks ago, the main problem I ran into was the lack of internal components and weapons makes the fights drag on a lot.
Then I got busy and haven't had time to work out a solution. Was thinking about moving all the ammo into the torso slots.

That's just me, though.
