I do not know what to buy my boyfriend.

My boyfriend deserves a gift that is both nice and appropriate. However, I do not know what to buy him.

He enjoys cooking, video games, computers, and whatnot. He owns a Cube and PS2, and he wants a Wii and is probably getting one for Christmas (I'd rather not get him a game though, just seems impersonal unless it's something really rad).

I also have no idea if I should be getting something romantic or what.

We've been together for less than a year, but I really do want to get him something special that he will really enjoy for $90 or less.

if there is a game you know he likes a whole bunch maybe you could get him video game paraphernalia related to that video game.

For example, if he likes psychonauts a whole lot, get him the psychonauts soundtrack and some psychonauts patches and a psychonauts pen.

    I like psychonauts.

If he likes cooking, perhaps a nice knife for the kitchen? That is something that he will probably enjoy for a long time, and I think you can get a pretty good knife for 90$.... not the most romantic gift perhaps, but boys tend to appreciate sharp shiny objects! :) Also, it is a joy to work with good tools, and he will think of you when he uses it.

Had you posted this earlier, I would have recommended $90 worth of stuff from Thinkgeek.com, but it's too late for that now.

Books are always good. Think back to stuff he's mentioned he would like to get but hasn't already.

If he's any kind of computer geek that enjoys case modding, get him a Dremel. If he has one, get him some accessories for it. IF AND ONLY IF HE HAS ALL THAT, find him a new case for his compy, something that's sleek and has mostly metal parts. You can find some decent ones for retail prices if they're being discontinued.

To Sami: I think the OP already has that covered.

Since a swanky digital camera is out of price range (and he most likely has one already) I should think 1 gig of flash memory for said camera would be more utilitarian. If I understand you correctly, that is.

Depending on his age, and if he has his own place, I would recommend you getting him some housewares type stuff. For instance, my birthday just passed and I was hoping my ex got me this knife set that I've had my eye on (about $90). I could have opened the gift, and we could have made something together (and taken pictures and whatnot).

That way, 1) I would have gotten the knife set... 2) we would have done something together... 3) we would have had a fun time... 4) she could have had one more event to scrapbook.

I think this could really work well in your situation as well. If not, count this as vote three for the Sexy Santa idea.

My vote's still on the dremel.

    Why?

Nothing suggested that he'd be overtly interested in moding PC cases. Even people who build their own PCs rarely bother with all that nonsense.

I don't think any of us really have enough info to give a decent recommendation, Seaworthy. If we new more about him and what he needs then we could probably help more, but if you had that info you'd probably be able to make a decision yourself.

A cook book wouldn't be a bad idea though. Maybe along with the suggestion that he cook you something out of it sometime.

Case modding is just one use. Dremel's are so utilitarian that I lost my mind when my last one died. But yeah, we need more info on his interests. I guess I'm projecting here. :|

I've used my Dremel a whole lot, but I still don't think I would have liked getting one as a gift. It just isn't... gifty.

If he really likes cooking, a nice hardcover cookbook and some sort of cooking accessory would be good. Or Cooking Mama ;)

    Get him a board game.

Yeah though, it might just be me, but I could give a crap what form the gift takes, so long as it is something interesting. Heck, sometimes it's nice to get something that your partner thinks is cool, even when it isn't whatever you were set on getting. I can buy my own stuff, but things I'd never even think of in the first place are sometimes very nice to get.

Also, it's cheesy, but making things for your SO can be nice, presuming you have some artistic talent or other. I know I'm still in love with the Blue Sun t-shirt my girlfriend made for me a few holidays ago.

The Leatherman Wave is pretty much the standard, about $50, and most guys get some serious use out of it.

    He enjoys cooking?!

Buy him a really, really nice knife, or a knife set. Technically, knives are considered an "unlucky" gift, but fuck that. A really awesome butcher knife is a treasure and if he doesn't already have one he'll be pleased and it's definately thoughtful.

Cooking type presents can be fun - the aforementioned Really Good Knife, for example, or a sushi making/serving set ... or if there's a kitchen appliance you think he'd like or could really use (a stand mixer, a crock pot, or something) that would probably be nice too.

Perhaps nice glassware/dishes, with a bottle of nice wine to go with it? If he likes cooking, check out Alton Brown's website. He's hilarious and has a great cooking show- and has really cool cooking tools to go with his recipes, even if you don't buy from the website, you can get some great ideas.

Perhaps a fondue set with chocolate/and a burner in it? That way you could use it right away. If he likes video games there is always the Penny Arcade Book, which you don't have to get from the internet if you are short on time.

On the face of it a video game might not seem great, but there is some potential there. For example, if he has some older systems and you got him a classic game that he hasn't played, that would be pretty cool. I would be impressed as hell if my wife picked up a used copy of Super Metroid for me.

Also cool - and as with the above, this kind of assumes that he is into classic gaming - would be to pick up an actual system that he doesn't have. This will be tougher given the amount of time you have left, but I'd think it was pretty cool to get a Dreamcast or a Genesis or whatever - and they can be found for pretty cheap.

A final suggestion on the video game side would be some sort of unusual collectible - like the PS2 Dragon Warrior Slime controller, or the Resident Evil 4 chainsaw controller.

Buy him a Henckels kitchen knife (or any german steel).

A good knife lasts close to a lifetime. A good knife is priceless in the kitchen.

It will not need sharpening any time soon, but as a added bonus you can buy him a sharpening instrument (stone, rod etc.) for his bday later!

Also, don't get him a butcher's knife. I am not saying they are not useful, but they are not the most used knife in a kitchen. Get him a general carving/cutting knife (long and elongated triangle shape). Those are used all the time for cutting veggies, meat, dicing etc.

If he truly likes cooking and has no good knife, he will LOVE it. Like I said, I learned that from my wife's latvian family (where cooking is the most important thing in life), GREAT KNIVES are priceless in a kitchen.

    Cheers!

Cooking gitts are good, because you can benefit (or suffer, depending on his skills) too.

Everyone in the world should own an Orka oven mitt.

Also popular are any silicone spatulas, spoons, etc. though not very exciting.

Maybe a mandoline if he's serious about cooking.

A dinner. A really nice dinner. Get dressed up together and go somewhere really nice - like a 4 or 5 star restaurant. It appeals to the chef in him, and is an interactive gift that leave memories. While you're there you can give him something small to commemorate the Christmas, but it doesn't have to be much.

Guys tend to not care as much as girls when it comes to gifts that really speak from sentimentality (that even a word?).
