I built a pretty kickass PC a few months ago, and I'm still buying this on 360 because I prefer a controller, recliner, and 56" HDTV to KB&M, desk chair, and 22" wide monitor. Even though the vast majority of the people here seem to go with PC, I really don't want to go that way right now.
Cost is no part of this decision. It's just comfort.
Though I may consider the PC version somewhere down the line if Borderlands is completely fucking amazing, "Top 5 games ev4r" material.
I think one of the reasons that my console game selection is almost entirely single-player, and my PC is multiplayer, is how transient the console crowd is. They'll play the hell out of Blood Guy 2 for a month or two, basically until the next Halo of Call of Duty comes out, and then suddenly finding a game of Blood Guy 2 online turns into a real pain in the ass.
That, and while PC gamers aren't exactly paragons of intelligence and Virtue, the tinny-voiced, pre-teen, homophobic, internet ganstas from Bumblefuck, Louisiana that populate Xbox Live almost to the point of excluding all others is reason enough to shell out the money to go PC on this one. xXx69MastahGangsta420 indeed.
We start with things we think work, and we actually created a group in October of last year called the Truth Team at Gearbox. The Truth Team. And The Truth Team's mandate is to tell us the truth. Where are we at? What do gamers, what do customers -- what do real customers, not developers, not even journalists. What do actual customers think right now about where we are at?
And so one of the people on the Truth Team, their job was to recruit gamers off the street. They go to the GameStops, they go to the local colleges, and they just get people. The other part of that is running these sessions, constant, continual focus tests where we can trend.
Typically, when a publisher does a focus group, they do like one in alpha and one in beta. And they really do it for themselves to see where they're at to decide what games to get behind, and it doesn't really get to the developer, and it doesn't really provide feedback that affect design decisions too much. It's really just for the publisher to get a gut check to find out what they've got their hands on there.
That's alright. I think there's some use to that, but we wanted something we could trend, so we do focus tests three or four times a week with the Truth Team. The first thing we do is collect the demographics like gender, age, what games have they played. Then we ask them, "What do you know so far? Have you ever heard of this before? Have you ever heard of Borderlands?" And then "Here, play some of it." Then we ask more questions, and then, "Keep playing."
And then we find out "What would you score this game? What did you like? What did you hate?" And we watch them play, too, and we record those experiences as well, and we learn a lot about what works. This guy just got bored at this point. This guy would have quit if it wasn't for the fact that he was here for these tests. That's really good information and we can do something about that.
Then we get to the point where we have people go for a four-hour session. When we're grueling them and they're mad that we have to kick them out, we know that we're getting there, right? We know that we're on to something. So, then we started running like weekend sessions where they go for eight hours on Saturday and eight hours on Sunday, like the same people. And they're volunteers. We're not paying them. These are just people.
And then when we get to the point where they're mad that we're kicking them out after they've had 16 hours, which is like in the way I play, that's two and a half Call of Duty 4 playthroughs. You know what I mean? [laughs] That's pretty hardcore. So, it was that process that I think we learned how to pace the game. Everybody has a varied experience, so your mileage may vary. But it's really compelling. We're having a lot of fun with it.
I don't mean to stir the pot here, but I second this lament. The last time I tried to pub a game on Live, I got a whiny 10 year old who, because he couldn't pronounce my tag (Mortal Peril), he proceeded to make fun of it. I turned off my Xbox in disgust, because it hurt my very soul to know that a) kids today can't read and b) shit like that IRL would get them a playground beating but they get away with it because they're online. Honestly, without a means of causing someone physical harm, I just can't bear the thought of playing on Live anymore unless it's one of my real-life friends. At least with PC games, there is some hope that the person on the other end is sufficiently intelligent to be able to type and operate a computer. It raises the bar only a little, but that difference is a sufficient barrier to the tween fuckwads who would insult my ears and waste my time.
Sorry, I'm just a cranky old man who need to rant from time to time. The above is not a reflection on anyone in PA. You guys are in general awesome and fun to play with.
It's kinda weird they're releasing this on a Monday instead of the usual Tuesday for the PC. But I won't complain about getting it a day earlier.
I'm all for dual-platform too if I find playing the PC version a bit too restrictive (keyboard-mouse-19" monitor). I'm used to playing FPS's with a controller and 36" TV. I have no local friends to play with, so I do not need split-screen. But I do like the trigger-button on the controller for FPS's to be all pew-pew and rat-tat-tat-tat.
Issues: I have a PS3, but I heard online play with that sucks. And my 360 is kaput at more than 3 years old with an expired warranty.
Um, anyone ever have any issues with extra copies of Steam games not showing up in your Games list? I'm hoping that the issue magically goes away when I get home from work and check again.
Well, even though I completely disagree with you reasons, I can't argue with them, because they're all down to personal preference. I can't and won't try to convince you that you should like chairs and monitors better than couches and bigger screens or whatever. You like them better, that's up to you.
I could make a point about how terrible pad controls are compared to kbam, but that's a very dead horse that's been beaten to a pulp already. All I'm gonna comment is how painful it is to watch the demo videos being played with pads... the veeeery sloooow and unnatural movements of the player point of view... But you're fully aware of all that, so whatever, your playing with pad will not have any impact on my gaming anyway.
Thing is, all that is pretty different from spewing a bunch of stupid and incorrect bullshit about them vidja cards or something. That's my whole point. I don't give a damn about what version some random people will get, there are already dozens of cool people in the WWB group, it's not like we're hurting for more. I just get annoyed by the lies.

Another plus is that I'm already online most of the time, with steam up, even if i'm not gaming. So if suddenly a game of SR2 Coop or L4D or whatever shows up, I can jump in. Or, if I have the itch to suddenly start playing some game, there is always like 20-30 people online not already playing another game, so I can invite them. Steam really makes it easier to start a match, even if most games don't use the Steam MP interface.
I like how they hired a "Truth team" I hope thats a true statement, because if theres one thing developers need now is someone to tell them what fucking sucks in games. I mean I enjoyed the hell out of wet, but was it really necessary to mash the x button to open every fucking door? I mean seriously lame. Or god damn batman and the grates.
More developers should have someone tell them their shit smells.

Echo, will you describe your hamburgers to me as though they were random Borderlands drops? What unique stats do they have? Perhaps they spawn a delicious hickory-smoke barbecue sauce?

Valve needs one of those for Steam.
I mean, as a platform, it's an awesome idea. As a service, it offers some cool things. But two things...
1. The chat disconnects I'd say about a dozen times a day at least. It's so annoying.
2. They actually spent development time to make it look like this:
They could've thrown together a sleek, native-looking app. But no. They chose to spend money to take us back in time to a bad Windows 95 theme.
I have to say, the confluence of Steam, Gamespy, and GFWL for Borderlands is rather concerning, although slightly short of horrifying.
EDIT: I forgot to mention this last night, since I've seen the question pop up here several times and not get answered.
Roland's turret starts with a 100 second cooldown. It lasts for 20 seconds, and DOES NOT cool down while it is deployed.
Answering you on PM, in order to clear the thread.
EDIT:
Regarding the Truth Group: It sounds really cool, but I'm kinda scared of consumer focus groups. They can screw up good things. Sometimes the creators should stand by their decisions...
[strike]Also, anyone interested in buying my 4th and final Borderlands gift should message me on Steam. Paypal required, sent as Personal, $33.75.[/strike]
Slot taken, but I'd still like an invite to the group.

I would be up for handling the money on a steam 4-pack, but it seems every time I do something like this online I get screwed. Last time I lost $120 to some jackass.
I guess if we can find a fourth I'll be down, but if I get screwed again this time, never again.
So, if anyone wants to be the 4th person in a steam 4-pack (essentially getting the game for $33.75) quote this post and PM me.
I have to go to work, but I'll be back in ~7 hours to check on it.
EDIT: got a fourth.... and a fifth sixth and seventh, lol, but I let them all know who they were so they could set up another 4 pack if they wanted.
Well my buddy ended up pre-ordering the PC version which I'm glad about but now I don't have another excuse for buying the console version other than I can't stand to wait another six days knowing that the game is out. Right now I'm having an internal conflict to justify spending another $60 just to play it before the PC version is out. Basically spending $10 a day for a preview. I don't think I'll do it but I may have to avoid the internet for a week.
What are the odds if I Gamefly it getting it sooner than the 26th? Maybe if I do it for the PS3 version...

I'm having a hard time with the 360/PC decision. I just booted up Steam for the first time in like 2 years (mostly because I'm a bad person), and now I think I'll start buying everything I see because it's awesome.
I have 360 friends that say they will get it, but my internet connection is ass at my apartment complex (but only for the 360). But there are many of you fine folks who are getting it on the PC. Maybe I'll get both, because I'll get at least 1 version for my birthday.

Holy shit, why do I even bother checking the GameFAQs forums for anything other than Japanese games...
Anyway, Mikey posted on his twitter account that he'll be giving away copies on Steam but has not revealed how yet.
He's also taking names for his list of preorder people to give free loot to at launch. DM him your steam profile link on twitter, and he'll put you on the list if you have it preordered.

if you can't/don't want to upgrade your PC to play it that's fine
