so the game says I need 5 munitions powers for sniper rifle/lead tempest, but I can select them anyways with only 4 munitions powers. or does it include my selection as the fifth for some reason?

Are you counting your energy builder?
yeah
I'm comparing the champion builder to the game here too, if that means anything. I think one is messed up because I selected sniper rifle at 11 but I can't do that with this program

It's kinda wonky how it works. Your endurance builder counts as a prerequisite when you're picking from within that set, but not from other sets. At least, that's been my experience.
Oh man, I was finally able to get my preorder card from Gamestop, and the key has already been used. Great. Why on earth don't they put scratch off covers on these things so people can't return them / employees can't steal them?
I get the sinking feeling I'm going to miss beta entirely and not be able to claim any preorder stuff :-/

but I only have munitions powers. so including my energy builder, I have 4 munition powers by level eight, and the prerequisite for sniper rifle is 5 powers but yet I can still choose it when I hit 11. unless travel power counts as a catch all

Is the Beta worth an extra $5? If you can't get Gamestop to give you a different one, you could always pre-order it again. You can still get your money back, no?

If you really want to try the game for a few days before it launches then see if they'll give you another card with the key on it. If they don't, immediately cancel your pre-order there and go to another store.

Well I can exchange this card probably as many times as I need. The issue is that A) it took me since Monday to find a Gamestop with a card in stock in my area and there's no guarantee the new card will work either.
Going through the effort to make a 20 digit code system and then printing it on the back of a postcard and giving that to the nations largest game reseller seems counterproductive. I'm sure someone "preordered", used the code, and then canceled their preorder and returned the card, or an employee just wrote it down. :-/

This game seems to be turning out exactly like CoX for me. That is to say, I can spend hours making different heroes, but once I get them in-game I become slightly underwhelmed, and eventually grow bored.
I did manage to get one character to level 3 before starting over though!
Sooooo eventually = 5 minutes?
Haha yeah, level 3 isn't giving things enough of a chance, I understand. But the freedom of this game only fuels my altaholism, and the cartoony graphics are proving very tough for me to come to term with.
Anyways, right after posting above, I logged into the game again and made another alt. This one is actually sorta clicking I think. I made him an electro blaster type, named Mr. Daws.
Try coming up with an entire character concept, story and all, then playing through the entire tutorial so you get new powers, your travel power, etc. Seeing a character you like develop goes a long way to smoothing out gameplay or graphics issues that might not click for you (I turned off the cartoony inking, it just wasn't doing it for me).
I'm trying this, as I have the addiction to altahol as well. Pickle nailed it on the head though. The game is underwhelming as fuck. I was actually really disheartened when I realized that it's just CoX 2 with an open class system. (I know I know, what did I expect...)
Also, it would have been nice having a properly optimized game for once. My new(ish) Macbook pro should not be struggling to hit 30FPS on low settings.
All bitching aside, I'm going back to play some more betahhhh... But I think they may have un-sold me my lifetime sub. (I really would like someone to convince me back though...)
someone tell me the instances and PvP will be better than CoX?
someone tell me the instances and PvP will be better than CoX?
The instances are all very atmospheric and awesome, but they're few and far between. That might also be why they seem atmospheric; you don't see the same tilesets a billion times.
As for pvp... it's a bit hit or miss. The open power system is a min-maxer's paradise, and you can't fix it without gimping the casual players or eliminating the open power selection. It's great fun if your build happens to be competitive, but some of the upper level play can be boring. The FFA matches, for example, will end in an automatic stalemate 99% of the time if the players know what they're doing, since nobody will be able to kill anybody else.
edit: I just remembered that a big part of the problem with defense dominance was created with the much maligned energy-system overhaul. Power costs went up, max energy went down, and damage was cut pretty much everywhere. Before that, it was at least possible to kill people at the higher tiers.
aaaaaaand I think you just unsold me for now. I like the minmax sometimes, but not here.... NOT HERE! I really didn't fully think that part of it out.
You should still give it a try if you get the chance. PVP is really quite fun in the early levels, and I do expect it will be re-balanced for Live.
Hey shatbat! Invisible hand here.
I'm going to wait to see how the balancing goes. Kinda worried about it. What do you think about ongoing content generation?
Anyone with the power armor set tell me what the 20/20 Fission advantage does for the Eye Beam attack? Says something about reducing the time for burn through, but I have no idea what burn through is.
We are actively working on the more obvious PvP imbalances (i.e. stacking active defensive powers) as they come up. So far our fixes for them should not ruin them for PvE in any way.

after 5 seconds, eye beam turns into a column attack. 20/20 reduces the time (I forget by how much)
Don't judge PVP until you at least have a passive.
Also, a passive defense is not the only way to get through PVP.
My passive is Fire Form, and I've been getting most of the kills most of the time.
And guys, people have been constantly claiming that Fire is a weak framework.
Fire's considered weak? By whom? Heatwave hits for around 1000 at level 10. Pyre is a spammable, 400-damage PBAoE. This is without any passive slotted. If anything, it needs its damage toned way down.
also if a skill doesn't say it scales with anything, does it just scale with whatever your highest stat is? or does it use a super secret scaling stat it wont tell you?
Munitions + Acrobatics = So much fun and something that doesn't really feel like an MMO.
I mean it does with the missions and stuff. But this game is definitely feels more action-packed than most MMOs. Also what little exposure I've had to PvP I've enjoyed.

I think there is a line on your character stat sheet, but all (most?) powers scale with your two super stats (probably just the sum, not sure, probably differently for different skills). I'm not sure about certain abilities, such as there's one for telekinesis called ego weaponry that has a line about a proc that scales with endurance(I think?) so I'm not sure if that means that it scales with both your superstats plus endurance (so if endurance is a superstat, is it twice as effective?) or just endurance.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. ~ Terry Pratchett
If you did not submit the beta key correctly, you will get get the no shards message. Reposting this because I know it helped some people (I don't think it's the OP's issue, but it might help some other people):
I was experiencing this same issue earlier. I resolved the problem by going into my account and re-entering the beta key. Make sure you complete the submission. Simply entering the key and clicking submit does NOT put the open beta access into your account. After submitting from the first page, you need to click a payment plan (or no thanks) and click submit again. Then you should have a confirmation message. Make sure you have the confirmation message, otherwise you have not entered the key correctly.
After doing this, you should be able to start the patcher.
If you are getting the "Key in use" error message, then follow Destra's advice.

I am finding annoying that there are bits and pieces of samurai and knight armor, but you can't really make a full suit of either.
here's my theory for tank building. Tanks do two things, survive and aggro.
Take Con and Presence as super stats.
Take invul as defensive.
Currently, the highest aggro abilities in the game are heals. Heals are also AE aggro, so I'd use the the heal that generates END as your END builder. It's nice END, AE aggro, and if you need to charge it for a heal, it does a good amount of hps.
Use defensive stance. In defensive stance, your heals will outaggro other heals.
There is a cone AE attack in the darkness tree that is a maintained cone. One thing it can be slotted for is the taunt where it will both taunt npc mobs and make anything that it affects to 20 pct less damage to anyone that's not you. The first tick of it is very low in energy. I'd check the powerhouse and see if you can slot the taunt advantage and have it proc on the first tick. If it does: cheap AE taunt.
The rest, I'd have to look at a powerset.
I think people are too married to the "Brick" style tank. I'd really like to see a ranged based or heal based tank.
This also has the benefit of being useful in pvp. Unkillable healer that debuffs other people? Yes please.
Keep in mind that I'm not saying that the tank SHOULD be the healer. But, currently, heals are the best way to get aggro.
I do sometimes wonder if taking regen AND the sorc mitigation aura would be better overall than invul (this is basing this on the assumption that regen counts as heals so it may add aggro and that invul may get nerfed).
Additionally: You can swap builds (and gear) in combat with a cooldown of 30 seconds. If you have a good group of people, you honest don't need a tank. Just have whoever is currently being hit go defensive.
Default hotkeys for these are F5-F9

The min-maxers are already hard at work. And people are looking for the most powerful builds already.
Instead of classes bring diversity to the groups, we're all going to be using the same builds give or take a few powers.
People, from what I hear in conversations, aren't so much concerned about character concepts and staying true to them with power taking, rather they just want to have the best build there is. Well, without classes that might boil down to 2 or 3 builds.
Everyone in end-game and PvP running the same builds but in different costumes. I'm already seeing signs of it in game.
What if there were diminishing returns on powers? Two players using the same power on a target will each be less effective than someone with a totally different frame. It would encourage people not to go FotM because if they and someone else both do it (to the same target) then they won't get high score.

I'm actually intending to do that as my next concept, however I can't decide what kind of starting powers to get.

Yeah, I just did this. The knight-ish helmet options are very limited, but the only one that matches (patterns and whatnot) is actually under Full Helms, which is sort of weird. Also, I'd really like the Swords you can put on your back to match the swords you use for your ability. Same for guns and other accessories. Probably too much to ask.
And goodness, I love coming up with silly names. Just made a Dual Swords chick with jeans and a leather jacket named Viv V. Sector.
