PS3 Sales: weekly sales in UK up x11; In Japan, sells 150k in first week (2k last week)

http://gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25163
According to information provided to UK site VG247 by Chart-Track, combined PS3 and PS3 Slim sales are shown in the company's system as '+999%' over the previous week.

However: "The system is set to display +999% when it encounters huge increases, so the actual increase in PS3 unit hardware sell-through is around 11X - so 11 times what PS3 was selling the previous week."

In the same period, even though the Xbox 360 is up 29% week on week, the PlayStation 3 is the top-selling console, and is outselling each of the Xbox 360, DS Lite and Wii individually by around 3:1.

According to Chart-Track, this is the first time since January 2008 that the PlayStation 3 is the best-selling console in the UK, and game sales "have increased by 17% (units) over [last week], to claim 3rd place in terms of software format units, behind Xbox 360 & Wii."

HDD : (Rumor) New models with 250GB for PS3 and 360
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/fcc-document-indicates-sony-planning-250gb-ps3-slim/
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/amazon-germany-lists-xbox-360-with-250gb-hdd-forza-3-two-wirel/
When it rains PS3 news, it evidently pours PS3 news (which is better than pouring actual PS3s -- that'd hurt!). A document dug up on the FCC website by PS3News appears to hold proof that Sony is already planning a follow-up -- albeit in capacity only -- to the 120 gigabyte PS3 Slim announced today. Carrying the model number CECH-2001B (as opposed to ending in "A"), the unit is listed as sporting a 250GB hard disk.

The document states that the two consoles (along with two Slim debug unit models) were actually tested by the FCC back in March of this year and seem to have been sneakily submitted by Sony Computer Entertainment America under the guise of a fictitious business (Sand Dollar Enterprise) located at ... SCEA's Foster City, Calif. address. Sort of silly, if you ask us, but hey -- it worked.

....

After being the first major retailer to release info on the PS3 Slim before Sony itself had announced the system, Amazon Germany is at it again, outing a 250GB Xbox 360 model for 280 euros ($379). An eagle-eyed Engadget tipster spotted the listing, which includes two wireless controllers and a copy of Forza Motorsport 3 in addition to the massively embiggened hard drive.

Since Forza 3 won't be hitting shelves until October 23 in Europe, it stands to reason that this listing represents a deal still a few months off, though Microsoft could very feasibly release this new SKU (sans accessories) earlier. On the subject of new Xbox bundles, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg told us in an interview yesterday that, "I'm sure there will be different offers depending on where you go and what time of the year it is." Looks like we've found at least one bundle so far! We've contacted Microsoft for comment and will update this post when we know more.

UK / EUROPE / PAL

UK Top 40 Software August 30th - Sept. 5th
For a second week, ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ holds tight at the top of the All Formats Chart ahead of Wii Sports Resort’ at No2 (-11%).

Sales of Eidos’ critically acclaimed title are only down 27% with the PS3 version gaining ground on the Xbox 360 version, boosted by bundling and the launch of Sony’s new PS3 Slim console at £249.99. Retailer bundling of Sony’s new cheaper and slimmer console has had a marked effect on the All Formats Chart this week with Activision-Blizzard and EA the main beneficiaries. ‘Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ (+128%) charges up the Chart from No10 to No3 – it’s highest position for almost 1 ½ years, while ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10’ is up one place to No7, sales climbing by 38%. ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ (+7%) and ‘Fight Night Round 4’ (+68%) both witness strong increases in sales to the PS3 versions, however ‘World at War’ still drops 2 places to No8, while ‘Fight Night’ makes its way back into the Top 10, up 4 places to No9.

There is still room for 2 new releases in the All Formats Top 10 despite competition from PS3 hardware bundled titles - 505 Games debuts at No6 with ‘IL2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey’ and Square Enix’s RPG on PSP ‘Dissidia: Final Fantasy’ is new at No10.

Dammit, I demand a more hilarious title!

Ah well, nice work on the OP. Sorely needed it from someone less lazy than I.

At any rate, ye gods was this a low-selling month. Both NSMB Mario Kart DS made it into the top 10. Wii Sports Resort kicked ass for just being out a week. NCAA Football did surprisingly well (or did it do that well last year?) considering Madden's about to come out. Starfy did quite well. Punch-Out's holding in there, as is Prototype.

Wii's down, so is the PS3. 360's doing pretty well, actually.

I suspect Nintendo will be looking to drop its price soon. The PS2 only went 2 years (less than 2 in NA) before receiving a $100 price cut. The Wii is now nearing a 3rd full year without a price drop. That's damn impressive.

I honestly can't fathom DS sales, though. Everyone's noticing the natural slump of Wii sales (which I think is more of a return to normalcy than Beginning of the End of Waggle), but half a million DSes in the dead of July is crazy, when you think about it. Though my mom added a +1 to the DSi tally by picking one up for my nephew last month. I'm curious to hear if Nintendo will break down the split between DS Lites and DSis. Regular DS Lites were also down to $99 at Target last week ... I think I could see a universal price drop on the Lite this holiday season as a last hurrah for the system.

It's the perfect example of hardware sales driving the software: Everyone who picks up a DS grabs four or five must-have titles. I could probably set my watch by New SMB sales.

Technically Nintendo could use the excuse that even slumping they are still slumping to number one, thus no need for a price cut...I just don't know if I see them doing it.

Punch Out is very impressive, it's too bad Little King's Story is doing so terribly...so much for a sequel. :(

lol @ NSMB and Mario Kart DS....the titles that just won't go away. :P

Edit: I just noticed Starfy....that is...surprising to say the least...I didn't think it would do that well. I could see it being a hit to the Kirby crowd.

What I find interesting is Nintendo just released their quarterly report and did not adjust their fiscal year goal of selling 26m Wiis. They're notoriously conservative and even last year were adjusting their forecasts down each quarter. So either they know something we don't, or there's going to be a big downward revision when October's quarterly report is released.

In an interview with the creator, he said Nintendo never gave him the greenlight to localize them because the subject matter was considered too Japanese for us Americans to handle. He wanted to do it, but they would allow him to.

He said this was the first one they felt didn't contain too much Japanese stuff.

Nintendo can't just remain the top selling system, they must continue vastly outselling the competition, else the fad will end.

    They can accomplish this by:
    1. Price drop
    2. Wii Sports resort pack-in
    3. new colors
    4. any combination of the above

None of that will happen this year I don't think. Maybe? I dunno.

Wait, if the Conduit sold 60-70k and does not show up on the top 20 list.

Doesn't that put the sales of 11-20 on the 60k to 96.8k range?

Also, Nintendo will only drop the price if dropping it will create enough extra sales to increase profit. They aren't running a race against the PS2, or some imaginary market share, they're in it to maximize profit.

One wonders if New Super Mario Bros. Wii will have the legs that NSMB for DS has. I can forsee that game selling a lot of systems this Christmas, assuming it comes out on time....

Also, The music game "crash" reminds me of the fighting game fad in the 90s. Everyone and their mother had to buy Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter II. Then they released bland fighting game after bland fighting game, and 15 bojillion versions of SFII, and it got old, and sales slumped appropriately....

Nintendo can't just remain the top selling system, they must continue vastly outselling the competition, else the fad will end.

    They can accomplish this by:
    1. Price drop
    2. Wii Sports resort pack-in
    3. new colors
    4. any combination of the above

None of that will happen this year I don't think. Maybe? I dunno.

See, I don't think a Wii Sports Resort pack-in would affect anything, really. Would it really draw someone to buy a $250 system that hadn't already bought a $250 system with Wii Sports in it?

And I still don't buy the argument that new colors really affects home console sales, though I have no evidence for it. Did PS2 sales change when they introduced the new slims that were white and pink and such? Also add in the fact that transferring VC and WiiWare titles is virtually impossible (eliminating the upgrade/collectability factor that always gave handheld systems a boost), and I don't think new colors will really spike any home console sales.

If there is any kind of price drop, though, I don't think it'll happen until next spring. I think Wii Fit Plus won't really make any sort of hardware splash (much like WSR didn't), but New SMB Wii could propel the thing to the fucking moon.

Ugh....I forgot about the figher game craze...remember the Street Fighter movie game...it was hilariously bad.
So does that mean Capcom was the Activision of fighting games.

Platformers did that around the time of the PS1 and N64...everyone wanted to have the next Crash or Mario.

Heh, I have sincerely fond memories of Primal Rage and Time Killers. Back then I was a huge fighting-game fan, but back then arcades were still cool.

I really think Nintendo has high hopes for Wii Fit +, Wii Sports Resort and NSMB Wii. I'm not sure the first two will move hardware all that much, but Mario certainly will.

Also, holy shit @ Starfy. I wonder if the other 4 titles would have sold as well if they had been released alongside their JPN counterparts.

I wonder why Nintendo didn't localize them.

In an interview with the creator, he said Nintendo never gave him the greenlight to localize them because the subject matter was considered too Japanese for us Americans to handle. He wanted to do it, but they would allow him to.

He said this was the first one they felt didn't contain too much Japanese stuff.

    Edit: *shakes fist at Zerokku*

One of the more annoying parts about Little King Story's lack of success is that it's one of the more Japanese games I've played recently. Not in terms of lolamericansaretoostupidtoappriciatethis, but it felt like there was a constant stream of cultural references that I could barely understand being thrown at me. Everyone is probably going to assume that that's why it failed, and never export anything like it again.

To this day, I have no clue why my local Walmart, the bastion of family-friendly shopping, had a Time Killers arcade cabinet by the entrance for years.

Ah crap, now I'm getting nostalgic for the time you could find arcade games and, hell, arcades everywhere. There was just something fun about being able to play a little while shopping for groceries or getting pizza.

I wasn't sure about New SMB Wii at first, but the closest point of comparison I can find is:

Mario Kart DS : Mario Kart Wii :: New SMB DS : New SMB Wii

Which sounds completely obvious (and I've been spending way too much time studying for the GREs since my mind instantly formed that analogy :P), but considering all three of the released games have patently absurd sales and have helped propel hardware sales for the past couple of years, when you phrase it that way, I could imagine New SMB Wii ending up as one of the greatest selling titles of the generation.

So, what impact do you think the Xbox 360 Pro being cancelled and replaces by the Elite will have if it happens?

It's not a matter of if at this point, it's a matter of when.

And the result will be that I will most likely buy one before the end of the year.

I don't think it'll have a huge impact, honestly. It'll probably help somewhat though.

personal side question: The Elites are far less susceptible to RROD, right?

If there is a Sony 80 GB price drop to $299, then having the 60 GB 360 priced at $299 would suddenly make Sony the better deal. So I think this is mostly a preemptive move so that when/if it happens, the 120 GB will still look like the better deal to the 80GB for the same price.

It's hard to predict the consequences of a preemptive move because you're comparing it against the theoretical of what would have happened without the move, which is all speculative.

I think it'll help Microsoft in the "hey look, we dropped the price of our $400 console to $300" front to put more pressure on the PS3. Besides that not many people really looked at the Elite once the HDMI port was added to the normal system so I don't see much difference except for maybe some fence-sitters who told themselves "if only the 360 had more hard drive space standard, I'd get it."

If the Elite console is a Jasper unit it will be drawing a lot less power, and generally run cooler than previous versions.

Here is a chart that shows the differences between the code names -->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_hardware#List_of_revisions

Elites are not guaranteed to be Jasper units though, especially if it has been sitting on the shelf for a while.

Edit:You can tell before you buy it by looking in the hole in the box by the serial code bar.

Most of the non-jasper units were sold off in the Fable2/Halo3 bundle, since those were all bundles of falcon 360s.

It'll help sales a smidge maybe, but probably not by much. The public isn't impressed all that much by teh memoriez.

The bigger question is, how well would a $299 PS3 slim help PS3 sales? I'd wager they'll improve a fair amount but still remain third behind the 360. It's probably too late in the generation for the console sales order to really change.

    From the OP:
NCAA Football 10 was the top selling game for the month, with combined sales of 689K units across all platforms.

NCAA '10 came out for four systems: 360, PS3, PS2, and PSP. We know how many copies the first two sold (376.5K and 237.4K, respectively) and we know that the PS2 version sold more than 60K copies.
      689.0
    - 376.5
    - 237.4
    - 60.0
    --------
        15.1

So the PSP version sold 15K copies at most.
