While inheriting the sleek curved body design of the original model, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new meticulous design with textured surface finish, giving an all new impression and a casual look. With the compact body and casual appearance, the newly introduced model will appeal to a wider audience who are looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home.
I don't see how it looks more casual.

Still no BC though, which surprises me that they still seem to refuse to use it.

Not me. When they took it out entirely sales weren't affected one iota. Also, cutting costs, etc.
Sucks though, I'd love to have it and finally get rid of my malfunctioning PS2 fat.
But I'm sure it would at least give one more incentive to upgrade their system to a PS3. Not sure I would have ever bought a PS2 at launch were it not for BC. Heck for the first year, I mostly played PS1 games on it.

That assumes that Pachter's "zombie hordes of PS2 owners that are waiting for the right PS3 bundle to rise up from their shallow graves and devour the brains of the living" theory is true. Which it isn't, if 360 and Wii sales are anything to go by.
Besides, PS2 sales have dried up almost completely by now.
Hmm. So if the PS3 Slim drops in early September, and the 360 gets Halo ODST in September ... do we know when Wii Fit Plus is dropping? Is there actually a chance that both the PS3 and 360 could outsell the Wii that month? New SMB isn't until later in the holidays and I can't remember if there's any other Wii software that might be a seller, barring the delayed effects of Wii Sports Resort.
Bic Camera is now adding the Monster Hunter 3/Classic 2.0 bundle to their bargain bins.
What is up with that company? I don't know much about them, but is it really selling that poorly at their stores?
They probably ordered FAR too much inventory, realized they were screwed, and have cut the price to get it out the door. I mean, does Bic Camera even do that much in video game sales? I don't know how it is in Japan, but I don't go to a camera store to buy games.

Huh. Wii Fit Plus drops Sept. 15, according to Wikipedia. I had no clue. Then again, they don't exactly have to trot it out to the enthusiast press, do they?
That plus Beatles Rock Band (which I'm guessing will be much, much bigger on the Wii due to its casual nature) gives me the impression that the Wii will do just fine.
Wii Fit Plus, GH:WT and Sammy Who? vs. Beatles Rock Band, Halo: Chief's Oddysee, the PS3 slim... September's NPDs will be interesting for sure.
Edit: And I should have said PS2 software releases.
Wow. I'm a bit surprised/impressed how acekard bypassed DSi 1.4 firmware.
Essentially, they mask the card as a legitimate retail game, and it looks like the only way that might be bypassed would be to block the game itself, which could cause some problems to say the least.

Yea, Punch Out has been a very pleasant surprise in how well it sold. I wasn't sure how it would do since Nintendo was using nostalgia to advertise it.
Hm...the PS3 price drop is tempting, but then Atlus has to go and announce a remake of Persona 3 for the PSP complete with manual control of allies and a new female protagonist option (complete with new events & stuff). Looks like PSP it is. Probably go with the Go since I'm a big fan of digital distribution and I like fancy new technology.

It is kind of weird to see the PS3 and PSP Go so close together in price, especially since there is a lot of overlap in terms of franchises. (The PSP getting games like Motorstorm, Valkyria, Persona and LBP is the main reason I have zero interest in a PS3.) Though didn't the GBA and GameCube both sell at $99 at one point?

Just don't expect prices on big DD games to be any cheaper than retail. The prices Microsoft's charging for their games on demand should be a pretty big warning, and expecting Sony to offer a better deal than Microsoft is always a losing proposition.

Buying a DD only console is like buying one that will only play disks from one retailer.

Well, I hope more PSP developers take the digital only route since that generally results in lower prices with the big example being the recent Badman title from NIS America costing $20 when they were originally going to sell it for more. It looks like it paid off for them as well: last time I checked in on the PSN, it was the second bestselling thing for the PSP, only being beaten out by FF7.
But yeah, I agree with you that fear of retailers is generally going to keep the UMD/digital dual released titles at the same price which is really lame for the digital downloads.
I'd like to buy a PS2 - a console is $100, a 8MB memory card is $20, and games are ten bucks apiece. Is now the best time to buy?
EDIT: I am NOT paying $150 for ten year old technology.
I bought mine when they were $150 slims just to play Shadow of the Colossus, and I don't feel like I overspent at all. Now that the PS3 is only $299 I would really like to get one (haven't jumped into this gen of consoles yet) but money is tight and I have a very limited PS2 library yet. Might as well get some more mileage out of that for the time being. Time to go buy Persona 3 or 4...
It's easy to get mileage out of a PS2. In my personal opinion, the sort of "ideal" PS2 collection would contain
well over a hundred games. So if you have less than a hundred PS2 games, chances are, there is still at least several good games out there that you haven't played yet.
At least the consoles are coming down in price. At this point (owning all platforms) I'm not even bothered, but I've said since 2006 that this generation has been 20-30% too expensive. On everything, including games.
Everyone is poor, and when I gotta pay rent, I pay rent and don't go out and buy an expensive luxury item. PS2 is still selling on par with it's successor because it's so fucking cheap.

Alright, I don't actually remember shit like that. I just read it on the internet somewhere.

GAMESCOM'09: Inventive deal will see EA distribute PS3 exclusive, instrument-free port of Rock Band, MCV understands
Beatles fans are in for a double treat this Christmas – with a SingStar title dedicated to the band set to join the Fab Four’s official Rock Band game on retail shelves in September.
In great news for the High Street, MCV understands that SingStar: The Beatles will effectively be an instrument-free port of The Beatles: Rock Band, and will be exclusively released on PlayStation 3.
Sources at Gamescom in Cologne told MCV that, as with The Beatles: Rock Band, the title will be published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts.
The title, which will come bundled with SingStar microphones, will be released “within days” of The Beatles: Rock Band’s arrival on September 9th, MCV understands.
The title will join SingStar Abba and SingStar Take That at retail this Q4.
It seems completely bizarre to me. That'd make it a Harmonix/MTV Games developed game, published by EA and using a Sony brandname. I guess EA don't have that much faith in Rock Band's popularity in Europe?
Did you see this, where Sony denied it even exists?
And on a day when they announce a newly-priced remodel of the PS3, I doubt they'd exactly want to kill any mention of a new entry in a hot-selling series starring one of the most popular bands of all time.

According to the Rock Band thread, a Harmonix staffer misinterpreted something that was said, and that there's no Beatles Singstar.
So an analyst is saying we might not see the likes of this year's price drop again any time soon.
News from Sony dropping the price of the PlayStation 3 to $299, and introducing a hardware redesign, will undoubtedly cause Microsoft to make a similar move to increase the perceived value of the Xbox 360.
But don't get your hopes up for another price drop anytime soon, though. We'll be stuck at $299 for quite awhile.
Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) analyst Jesse Divnich says the $299 price point will be the standard going forward for next-generation consoles for the next year. He also predicts it will be a long time before we see another price drop like this again.
"It is possible that both consoles may reach a $249 price point 12 months from now, but that will likely be the lowest prices will get in the next two years," he said.
"Going forward, both console manufacturers will focus more on delivering differentiating products and services to increase the value of their consoles. Both will continue to increase the size of their hard-drives and likely add additional hardware and software features to appeal to consumers."
Divnich also speculates what many believe Sony and Microsoft will do regarding each of the company's new motion controllers, and that is packing them into a new bundle.
"It would not be out of the realm of possibility for Microsoft to include Project Natal as a standard attachment with all Xbox 360 systems in 2011. The same goes for Sony's new motion controller that is currently in development."
If this generation really does stretch out longer than past ones than I can absolutely see this happening. Perceived value, the desire to keep selling consoles at year seven, etc.
