The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I mean, it still works. The writing is great and this is one of my favourite shows.
But at time, and it might just be me, the timeframe seems off. Like I'm never aware how much time is passing. Maybe the British guy left like 2 months ago, in which case, of course they wouldn't still be talking about it.
betty called a number she found in don's office and the therapist picked up. she realized he had been checking in with the therapist for information. she presumably then quit going.
and the british guy didn't leave. his replacement got his foot run over by a lawnmower, so he stayed. they don't talk about the british in every episode, but it thematically ties into don's overall sense of powerlessness and his feeling of entrapment. the last time there was a big important meeting was like two weeks ago and he was there. cooper wasn't in every episode before, so i don't see why british guy would be.
I don't know about the rest of the seasons, but in season 1 at least you see Betty going to the therapist pretty much directly after she finds out he's been calling Don with updates.
Ugh, those posts distracted me for the reason I came into this thread.
I was thinking today - I wonder what next plot will be haphazardly abandoned by the Mad Men writers next?
They kind of let the "Betty needs a therapist" thing just end without even really touching on it. There hasn't been ANY reference to Don's previous life/brother that killed himself at all for a good while. Then they abandoned the British-people-come-and-take-over thing.
I'm half expecting Conrad Hilton to just not be in the next episodes...
i'm actually pretty happy that they don't hammer us over the head with a few plotlines. i think they took those first two about as far as they could, and the british takeover has been pretty pervasive this season so i don't know what you're talking about there.
They didn't take the Betty thing at all though, the started with her getting the weird hand things and then she went to a therapist and then....i don't even remember how they resolved it?
There hasn't been mention of the British thing for the past couple of episodes. Like, nothing. I know they used one of the eps to show that they were moving the guy to India, and then, that was it. Really if you look back, the whole storyline was pointless.
I see it the other way.
Having all of these plotlines throughout every episode would have been artifice. Mad Men has set up plenty of 'hooks', establishing many devices which will no doubt come up again later in the season.
The pacing of the show is one of the main draws for me. So what if nothing came of the Betty thing? It'll come back later on, just like the whole Roger/Joan thing and the Peggy baby thing.
Cramming everything in for the sake of 'plot' would turn it into more of a pulp show like Lost. Not to say that's bad, it just doesn't fit the tone this show has. It's a different, more sedate flavour and one which I enjoy.

well, there you go!
i wonder whether they will have the betty-don confrontation next episode or drag it out for a while
and now I have to explain to some silly billy that I was referring to what was happening in the episode between don coming home and the baby crying, not the quality of the episode
Man this was a really, really, really good episode. It really made me notice the differences between Roger and Don. Roger, while not having everything go completely smoothly, is always honest no matter what. Don, on the other hand, is not always honest and his life has many more ups and downs. God I love this show!

If looks could kill, Betty would have killed the entire crowd just through collateral damage.
Loved the scene with Roger and his mom though. That was pretty amusing.
