if we stop calling things gay, we'll just need to find some other group to associate a derogatory phrase with
what I'm saying is that this is like complaining about which coral reef to dive on, when the real issue is that you're going to be diving on a coral reem
The incoherency springs from the fact that the spots themselves insult the target of their message, which might work to attract attention, but the actual payload of the spots isn't savage enough to kindle any kind of genuine analysis.
Can we not call fat people fat, or tall people tall, or dead people dead?
Sure. But would you call a movie "fat" because you are trying to associate a bad movie with fat people?
Your examples are the exact opposite of what the commercial is trying to say. Basically, its fine to call something what it is. The problem is when you associate a (unrelated) group of people with something you perceive to be bad.
The part of the newspost where Gabe calls out the Raul dude reminds me of that old feature where he and Tycho (and Kara, sometimes?) would play with their PP tags and they posted the results of people constantly trying to trashtalk them

Point taken. But what if I did associate fat people or tall people or hispanics or whatever with something bad? Like, what if I said "this movie is so fucking fat", meaning "this movie is so fucking shitty"? Would that be in the same ballpark as saying something is gay or you're a faggot?
I dunno, I just try to not use derogatory words like "fag" or "faggot", and not to use "gay" in a bad way either. Which means I'm really taken aback nowadays, since most of my social circle has gotten older and dare I say more mature, when I hear someone go "You faggot!". There are people on this very board who still use such needless vernacular.
Ya know, if someone came up to me like that in one of the ads I honestly think my first reaction would be to say "Quit being such a fag, you dolt" then ignore them. Tell me how to use my words will you?

I am currently bleeding to death but this hangnail is really annoying me so I think I will clip it first.

"I captured that flag like I captured the heart of my male life partner!"
that lady is so smug about her clever turnaround
This seems like the type of comedy that "Randy" was doing in Funny People.
Like when his punchline wasn't funny, he just repeated it in a silly voice.
it's the ad council, they do lots of stuff like this but i really don't know who they are, or who funds them
