How do you customize all of your email address?

Not just the beginning like xxxxxx.xxx@hotmail.com
I'd like to do it all so it's more professional:

I want conrol of all the "x"s
xxxxxxxx@xxxxx.xxx

Buy a domain name and run your own mail servers. Or buy hosting from a company that provides mail service on top.

For example, 1and1.com would appear to provide exactly that for $0.99 a month, plus the (annual) cost of registering a domain name, which is $5.99 for a .com, .net, .org, .us, .name or .info tld.

EDIT: I should add that I can't speak to 1and1's reliability or quality, they were just the first hosting company that sprang to mind. Shop around and you might get a better deal. There was a thread on good webhosts the other day.

About 15 bucks a year and you can try and register @whateveryouwant.com

That comes with a little online space and unlimited forwarding address for the stuff before the @ symbol. Kinda nice if you want to see who's telling the truth about not reselling you email addy.

Google Apps for your domain. custom email, web page, calendar, and your own private IM through google talk.

they just added a feature that lets you buy the domain straight from google, and it comes with private registration (means people can't find your name, address, and phone number just by doing a WHOIS search on your domain name.
