    Hey guys,

Long time reader of PA and the forums, but the first time I've ever posted. I actually created an account specifically to app to your corp.

I played for about 3 months or so a few years ago, but quit because I couldn't find a corp I liked. However, I think you guys would be a cool fit for me.

I know that you require 90 days on the forums, for community sake, and I don't have that. But I promise I've been lurking and reading PA for a looooong time.

I want to reactivate my EvE sub, but I want to see if there's a possibility of me joining the corp first. I don't think I would stay long without being in a corp, so before resubbing, I wanted to check here first.

    Lemme know.

    Thanks.

Sure you can join MerchI, it's pretty easy. Fill out an app and tell us about why you feel you would be a good addition to our fleet and deposit 30 million isk to one of our directors as a security deposit until you are finished with a mandatory 2 month "probation" period.

Listen, Deepcrows ain't really good for anything. Nobody's ever online, and those that are, well, usually they're not into what you're into. Just, I mean, there's SO MUCH to do in Eve, and if you pick one random person (as usually there's just the one person online in Deepcrows), they're doing other shit than you are.

I really wish it were better, but it Does Not Work As Advertised.

You really need to give it an objective then. I would guess that PA has the strength of numbers to sustain an auxiliary corp if that corp was actually an auxiliary and not a social club. That would however make them a target...

It isn't a successful tackle unless they manage to shoot your Rifter out from under you before the big guns get off their lazy asses and take advantage of the point.

We don't get Rifters with enough ammunition to reload the guns for a reason. If you run out of amunition in a Rifer you are doing it wrong.

Slightly concerned: I submitted my GoonFleet forum request, but I accidentally forgot to capitalize my last name on the app, and it says that it must MATCH what my handle is in game. Am I royally f*cked? Should I resubmit my app with my proper name? I don't want a Wavechaser thing. :)

I vaguely remember one of the old Eve corps that used to run mining ops in a non-secured channel. I also remember occasionally shooting at them and stealing their ore for running mining ops in a non-secured channel. Is the deep crows likely to do something like this anytime soon? That might be worth coming back for.

To participate in the mining ops, of course. I have to insist on a non-secure channel, though. They make it more fun.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If someone gives you shit, just play clueless newbie and take the ribbing. Filing a ticket and trying to fight through the proper channels will probably garner more trouble than it's worth for a non capitalized letter ;-)

I app'd to deepcrows Monday and I still haven't gotten a response. It seems like its not an active corp.

So would someone be very kind enough for give me the low-down on Eve, MerchI and playing in general?

I played the demo about 2 years ago, loved it but felt overwhelmed, knew no one, and was confused as hell about what to do and where to go.

I understand that part of the appeal is the lack of structure and the ability to do almost anything, but I didn't get it at first.

However, I got an e-mail from Eve recently advertising their newest expansion, and I figure it might be fun to give the game another try, maybe in a week or two. What do I need to know, what's the best way to get started?

One of the turn offs to me, initially, was how the game was based around a time benefit. Meaning, the longer your character was active, the more skills he'd get. So I felt I'd never really ever be able to catch up to the players who have been around for ages, and I'd always be playing at a disadvantage. I assume this is still the case, but am I wrong in that assumption?

I know some of this is covered in the OP, and I'm going through it, but anything extra would be appreciated!

The time required to do studff is exponential. For instance, to train Cruisers to level 4/5, it would take you (pulling this outta my ass) one day in total, from level 0-4. To go from 4-5, it woudl take a week. And that extra level gives you say 5% more damage. Good, but not amazing - two newbies with middling skills will tear apart a pro player (provided they have the appropriate equipment, of course).

Edit: To make this clear, this is not like WoW with that bullshit '5 levels above you? -90% damage!' stuff. Everyone does the same damage to everyone. A newbie with a warp disruptor will fuck you up just as bad as an expert (although maybe not as far or in as nice a ship).

You can join fleet battles within about 10 hours of playing - and you'll be doing the tutorial for most of that. By the time you're done tutorial, you can start doing pretty much anything.

Money wise, to start, you'll be following someone in a bruiser of a space ship as they kill pirates, scoopibng up the remains (salvaging/looting). This is very lucrative, and in fact often earns just as much money as killing the bad guys (bounty payments).

Within a week or so you'll be able to take a cruiser out to play, and at least assist someone else as they rat (kill NPC pirates). People will LOVE you if you take a ship with healing capability and heal them as you scoop wrecks. One ratting + one healer/salvager will earn more money than either alone.

Also, be prepared to die. Shit happens. Random NPC pirates will tackle your ship, preventing you from escaping. A bad set of circumstances will get you killed. It's okay - insurance covers all T1 ships, which is all you'll have for a good couple months. A good maxim in EvE is "every ship yo own is simply an explosion waiting to happen". You will die, often. It's no biggie. This is not WoW.

Also, on the topic of dying, pvp is complete unregulated and dangerous. Random gangs of assholes will pop into system, looking for people to kill - people like you. 99% of the time you can simply dock and wait them out, or go elsewhere. Or, take the fight to them in an expendable tackle-ship, locking them down for your friends. It's fun. Point is, don't worry about death. As long as your clone is paid up, you have nothing to fear.

And yes, there is a LOT to do out there. If you want to start, I'll send you an invite, it'll give you a nice 21-day trial rather than 14 days.

The important thing that Merch and goonfleet in general counts on is that newbies are just as useful as old players. A day one newbie in one of the ships we give out for free can ruin the day of someone who's been playing for years. So you do gain more skills by playing longer, but you never hit a point where you're invincible to new players.

That does sound pretty awesome. I think an invite would be good, but let's hold off for about a week. I've got a backlog I'm working through, and I'd like to give Eve my undivided attention.

It does sound like fun, and it's good to hear that I won't be completely outclassed all the time. What about activity? Are people fairly active? I mean, if I log on at around 6-7 eastern on most nights, will there be someone to play with or talk to?

I really love the concept of a space sim mmo.

In terms of expansion sets, if I decide to jump in fully, will I end up needing to buy like 10 expansions or something? How's that handled?

Its well worth doing, i only came over from WoW a few months ago, but it amazing how much you can do and how much fun you can have if your new, willing to learn and in a good corp, you soon get a steep learning curve in EVE. Just come in and do what you want, most of the time you can, and you cant go wrong :)
