Coffee Addiction?

Hey all,

Over the last ~8 months, I've been having a large coffee almost every day. It's been more consistent over the last four months, with a large double double every single day. For the last week I've been trying to get out of the habit and have some pretty killer headaches that ruin my day (I just stopped drinking coffee altogether). What are some ways I can try and get rid of my coffee dependence without suffering through the headaches?

Just drink smaller and smaller amounts over a decent period of time.

You will probably still get some headaches but they will be much more mild.

Don't quit cold turkey. It's not as if coffee is killing you (unless it is). Just slowly cut down on the quantity you drink each day. If you enjoy sipping on something hot, then make tea or lemon water.

Me, though... you'll have to pry that mug from my cold, dead hands.

The headaches are due to caffeine withdrawal. If you just go cold turkey like that, they will stop eventually given enough time, but it will continue to hurt in the meantime. Or, you could taper things a bit - have a single smaller coffee, or get some caffeine in smaller doses from tea or soda. Decrease the amounts of those you drink every couple of days and get yourself down to no caffeine over time, not immediately.

Why do you want to stop? Coffee is great for you (if you don't load it with sugar and creamer).

I have a caffeine dependence as well, and if I stop for a few days I'll get headaches too.
If you are adamant about quitting, just taper it off slowly. Ex. Drink smaller and smaller amounts daily until you can stop entirely.

But really, it's not like it's harmful, and is actually fairly good for you.

I've managed to switch to decaf tea over the past few months. Simply got a box of caf, box of decaf, and mixed the two so heartily that I couldn't tell which was which. Some days I'd get full strength, others none.

But because I never knew I didn't get the vicious headaches I did the last time I tried to kick the habit.

Straight decaf now. Which has the added side effect of making caffienated beverages wind me right the fuck up. :D

You could always use a half-and-half mix for coffee as a bridge down.

I know coffee can be good for you, but I don't like the idea that if I skip out on coffee for a day for whatever reason I'll end up get a splitting headache. And having any sort of a dependence bothers me and makes me feel unhealthy -- I don't feel energetic or enthusiastic about the day until I have a coffee and that seems wrong. In any case, I'll tone down the size I drink every day and go from there I guess. Thanks for the advice.

You could try throwing some decaf in the mix. Maybe as your 2nd and 4th cup for the day.

(Holy fuck.... I just counted 9 empty cups in my office. From today)

    Ahh, crazy canuk terms.

Anyways, I used to load it with cream and sugar all the time, I just added less and less until I started enjoying it black. Now I can't have it any other way.

Though I'd never dream of subjecting myself to the horrors of such a method, if you brew it yourself it might help to do half decaf grounds.

As someone who generally drinks about a half gallon of black coffee everyday, I think my brain would go all Scanners on me if I tried to quit cold turkey. My friends are convinced I'm going to wind up with kidney stones the size of grapenuts.

Honestly it's not that difficult to kick the habit assuming you drink any other caffeinated beverage. Teas are a good alternative and most people do drink sodas with caffeine in them.

Basically, I just loaded myself up on a couple of alieve and a couple of tylenol for the week or so I suffered withdrawal it made it relatively easy to ignore the cravings with no pain.

Also coffee is OK (not good) in moderation (i.e a glass once a day or every couple of days) drinking 9 cups a day (considering those probably aren't measuring cup cups) is doing roughly the same thing to your arteries and heart that smoking a pack of cigarettes a day does. Further coffee has no effect on wakefulness the effect you feel is from the addiction to the caffiene, once you sate your addiction your body goes back to normal, after a couple of weeks with no caffiene your body will become naturally wakeful the same way it was w/ coffee. Also there's quite a bit of evidence that driving under the influence of caffiene is more dangerous than driving while sleepy.

Also the study that showed coffee could be good for your heart was confirmed for elderly adults using one cup a day. High blood pressure/cholesterol more or less eliminated them from the study because caffiene is a major heart attack risk. There was no benefit for mid or young adults who don't suffer from the elderly problem of being too stress free. Not to mention caffiene spikes cortisol (which leads to the storage of fat), spikes in blood sugar (causing a craving when the coffee wore off as well as contributing to onset diabetes), and increase of blood pressure (which isn't good).

Caffeine is an analogue for adrenaline in our body, there's plenty of information availible on the negative effects of epinephrine and cortisol on the body. At 1 cup a day (measuring cup cup) it's effects are negligable and your body can cope even benefit from the stress (unless you have pre-existing heart conditions or take antidepressants) at 10 you're pushing yourself far too much. If you're getting lattes with 2+ shots in it you're doing even more damage.

Coffee's lethal dose is ~80-100 cups depending on the individual (20 with some anti-depressants) constantly dosing yourself with too much can severely impact your health. Also individuals have been known to recieve a lethal dose from as little as 3 grams of caffeine for unexplainable reasons.
